SOLVAir Select 200 Application Guide

SOLVAir Select 200 Trona Application Guide
Control acid gases with SOLVAir Select 200 Trona
OLVAir Select 200 trona effectively cleans flue gas by reacting
with acid gases, such as SO2, SO3 and HCl. Due to its effectiveness in
removing SO3 which competes with mercury for adsorption sites, trona
has demonstrated good mercury removal efficiency. Its other major
benefit includes enhancing the performance of the Electrostatic
Precipitator (ESP). This application guide shows how it is used in
Dry Sorbent Injection systems, and how to calculate the quantities
needed to achieve the desired results.
Chemical reactions for SOLVAir Select 200 trona
2(Na2CO3 · NaHCO3 · 2H2O) 3Na2CO3 + CO2 + 5H2O
Na2CO3 + SO2 + ½ O2 Na2SO4 + CO2
Na2CO3 + SO3 Na2SO4 + CO2
Na2CO3 + 2HCl 2NaCl + H2O + CO2
Why is SOLVAir Select 200 trona so effective?
When used as a dry sorbent injected into an exhaust duct, SOLVAir
Select 200 quickly reacts with acid gases, forming waste products that
will not damage equipment. Various field tests have shown complete
removal of SO2 and SO3 to below detectable limits.

Typical Dry Sorbent Injection System
Trona is very capable of getting HCl levels below the MATS limit:
0.002 lb/mmBTU. In addition, through effectively removing SO3 it
enables activated carbon to meet the mercury limit in MATS. When
injected in high temperatures, it is able to remove approximately 10
– 20% of NOX. Industries using SOLVAir Select 200 trona for flue gas
emissions abatement include coal-fired electric utilities, aluminum and
other metal processors, waste incinerators, petroleum refining, and
cement manufacturing.

At what temperature is SOLVAir Select 200 trona effective?
SOLVAir Select 200 prior to activation:
very smooth grain surface
At temperatures about 275°F (135°C), although temperatures above
325°F (159.5°C), are more desirable, SOLVAir Select 200 trona
rapidly decomposes to soda ash. The rapid decomposition causes a
tremendous increase in surface area. The high surface area and small
particle size make trona very effective in reacting with acid gases.

Sodium sorbents reactivity
The amount of sorbent injected into the flue gas is presented on a
normalized basis, and is known as the normalized stoichiometric ratio
(NSR). The NSR is expressed as the stoichiometric amount of sorbent
required to react with all of the acid gases present in the flue gas.
