2011-2012 Year-End Review

Our Mission
Communities In Schools (CIS) surrounds students with a community
of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
The Five CIS Basics
AT THE HEART OF WHAT WE DO.
The creative inspiration for
our 2011-12 Annual Report
comes from artwork (above)
created by CIS students and
Ms. Amie Taylor’s art classes
at First Ward Creative Arts
Academy. The collaborative
painting is the students’
answer to the question,
“What does CIS mean to
you?” We think they captured
beautifully the essence of our
mission and what our staff
members so strongly believe:
that kids are indeed at the
heart of what we do.
Communities In Schools believes all students need and deserve five
basic resources:
U A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult
U A safe place to learn and grow
U A healthy start for a healthy future
U A marketable skill to use upon graduation
U A chance to give back to peers and community
Programming & Services
CIS provides a “safety net” for at-risk students by coordinating and delivering
community resources to students and families at the school site. The scope of
current CIS programming includes school-based dropout prevention for grades
PreK-12; college access and career readiness services; support for teen mothers
balancing the challenges of childcare and high school graduation; and working
with youthful offenders to continue their education.
2011-12 Success Rates
During the 2011-12 school year, Communities In Schools provided services
to 6,733 students identified as most at risk for school failure in 44 CharlotteMecklenburg public schools. Of those 6,733 students enrolled in CIS:
U 87% had an average daily attendance of 90% or greater.
U 99% stayed in school.
U 91% were promoted to the next grade.
U And 653 seniors enrolled in CIS during 2011-12 graduated
with a high school diploma.
U In addition to students on the CIS caseload, CIS assisted
another 30,000 students through school-based programming
and resource securement. Examples of services that benefited
the entire student population at CIS school sites include volunteer
coordination, school supplies, book donations, clothing/uniforms,
after-school snacks, motivational and educational guest speakers,
referrals for assistance, and more.

MERCHANTS
FOUNDATION
Dear Friends of
Communities In Schools,
It is with great pleasure and pride that I share our Year-End
Review for the 2011-12 school year with you, our faithful friends,
partners, and supporters listed in the following pages. Without
you, our work to improve the lives of children and families in
this community would not be possible. Without you, the students who created the artwork used in this year’s report wouldn’t
have experienced the “caring hands” of CIS that inspired their
artistic interpretation in the first place.
Last fall we asked students at First Ward Creative Arts
Academy, led by art teacher Amie Taylor, to create a painting for
our Lowcountry on the Green event and silent auction, based
on the question, “What does CIS mean to you?” We absolutely
loved the result – not only the vibrant colors and students’
hands, but most of all, the main sentiment that the students felt
best portrayed CIS – that kids are at the heart of what we do.
Together,
we are the
‘caring hands’
our students
need to shape
a better future
for us all.
’’
Everything that CIS does – every plan we consider, every
decision we make – is done with students in mind. The rewards
are exponential. By supporting students’ ability to fulfill their
potential and graduate from high school today, we help create
tomorrow’s leaders.
Thank you for your belief in CIS. Together, we are the “caring
hands” our students need to shape a better future for us all.

DreamMaker Award
In May 1996, it was the vision of a group of Communities In Schools students to create an award
to be given to an individual or corporation that demonstrates an extraordinary contribution
to the education and welfare of children. Molded from the hand of one of these students, the
“DreamMaker Award” is unique because it illustrates the pride and sense of accomplishment felt
upon reaching high school graduation.

FEATURING
Dan Cardinali, President, Communities In Schools National Office
Dr. Jay Smink, National Dropout Prevention Center/Network
On October 26, 2011, CIS hosted a “Graduation Summit,” open to the public and designed
to provide current information around dropout prevention and ways this community can best
support our students to help them stay in school and graduate. The program opened with a
panel discussion with local educators, followed by featured presenters, Dr. Jay Smink of the
National Dropout Prevention Center/Network and Dan Cardinali, President of the Communities
In Schools National Office. More than 200 CIS staff, CMS teachers, administrators, child/youth
advocates, and interested citizens from the community attended.
School Tools
Communities In Schools, in partnership with WSOC-TV and Classroom Central, would like to
thank the Charlotte community for generously supporting the 2012 School Tools Campaign.
More than 555,000 items valued at over $379,000 were collected in Mecklenburg
County and distributed to thousands of students in need in 100+
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

Two Great Rounds for A Great Cause!
Power Plant Management Services, LLC
Power Power Plant Management Services, LLC (PPMS) sponsored their
first annual charity golf tournament on September 24 at Carolina Lakes
Golf Club, raising $12,000 to benefit Communities In Schools of CharlotteMecklenburg (CIS). “It was a fun day of golf and fellowship while supporting
a very worthy cause, Communities In Schools, and the thousands of children
CIS supports every day in Charlotte-Mecklenburg,” stated Tracie Weeks,
Accounting General Manager with PPMS, tournament coordinator and past
member of the CIS Board of Directors. “It was a great event, and thanks to
the very generous support of our independent power industry firms and
PPMS, we are already planning to do it again next year.” PPMS is a growing
general and administrative services management consulting firm focused on
the domestic independent power industry.
Risk Management Association
The Charlotte Area Chapter of the Risk Management Association (RMA)
hosted its fourth annual Benefit Golf Tournament on April 18, 2012
at Rocky River Golf Club, with proceeds benefiting Communities In
Schools. Over the past four years, the RMA Charlotte chapter and its
members have generously given their time and financial support to
increase awareness for the mission and work of CIS, as well as raise
critical programming dollars to ensure that Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s
neediest students get what they need to be successful in school. The
Risk Management Association (RMA) is a not-for-profit, member-driven
professional association, whose sole purpose is to advance the use of
sound risk principles in the financial services industry.
