LAKELAND IS20
INTRODUCTION
Lakeland IS 20 is a concentrated solution of Iodine in non-ionic surfactant, designed to
give ease of handling for formulators.

APPLICATIONS
The formulation of IS 20 into iodophors is fairly straightforward. The final formulation is
up to the formulator, but some suggestions follow. Hypoiodous acid rather than iodine
is the active ingredient in these formulations and exists at levels of only about 15% in
aqueous solution according to the following equilibrium:

However the presence of hydrogen ions (acid) pushes the equilibrium towards the
hypiodous acid. This should be remembered when formulating iodophors. The pH
should be below 5 and phosphoric acid is suitable as it tens to buffer at pH 3 to 4.
FORMULATION
The following are suggested formulations for a variety of uses. All contain 1.75%
available iodine and are to be diluted to give a working solution with the correct pH and
available iodine. The parameters of available iodine and pH ultimately must be
determined by any statutory instruments or analysis, or by trial cleaning.

HANDLING & STORAGE
This product will have a shelf life of 6 months minimum if stored in the original
unopened container under normal storage conditions and at temperatures between 5oC
and 30oC. This product will become solid/paste at freezing temperatures but will
reconstitute on warming to room temperature.
