Geo Traffic Management allows DynECT Managed DNS clients to set a DNS response based on the geography of the requesting party. Geo Traffic Management improves on the existing Traffic Management service by performing a recursive IP address lookup. This approach is more granular than targeting solely on requests routed to the closest data center in one of Dyn’s seven pre-determined regions in the Anycast network. Dyn can now get more specific and indicate where traffic from different states in the US, provinces in Canada, or individual countries is sent. Following these rules, traffic does not necessarily need to be sent to which data center is closest and different rule sets can be made for a number of different scenarios like language, high traffic situations, and testing, to name a few. How Does Geo Traffic Management Work? When setting up Geo Traffic Management, you provide Dyn with the IP address or host name for all of your servers. For each server, you can declare which state, province, or country maps to it depending on your needs. The location of the recursive DNS server for the user visiting your site determines which one of your servers is handed out for the user to connect to. What are the Benefits of Geo Traffic Management? Network Tuning In the event that a geographic area doesn’t neatly fit into (or disobeys) Anycast, Geo Traffic Management can be used to fix these abnormalities. Using the example of traffic coming from Egypt, does that traffic go to a European or Asian data center instead? With Geo Traffic Management, you can specify the best location for this traffic to go. Overlay Active Failover or Traffic Management For added granularity, you can overlay Geo Traffic Management on a hostname with other advanced DynECT Managed DNS features, such as Active Failover or Traffic Management. This allows the user to adjust a specific region causing trouble while leaving the rest of the world as it always has been. @dyninc managed dns a d v a n c e d f e at u r e dyn.com @dyninc p2: Geo Traffic Management Cloud Balancing and Content Distribution If you produce content that is consumed by people from multiple different nations that speak a range of languages, it may be beneficial to make a rule based on what language the requester speaks. For example, you can set Geo Traffic Management up so that when you receive a request from one of the 22 Spanish-speaking countries in the world, they will all go to one predetermined server or CDN.
