Ideas for the Classroom
Faculty can select an event scheduled during the celebration, or an MLK reading,
recording or quote that relates well to the theme for the 2017 Celebration for
students to:
1. Respond to comprehension and/or reflection questions (please see the link
below to question starters as a useful resource to develop questions).
2. Write a reflection paper.
3. Prepare reflective individual or group presentations.
4. Participate in a guided discussion (please see the link to question starters
below as a useful resource to develop questions).
5. Participate in a problem-solving discussion related to a current issue. The
students might be able to imagine how Dr. King might approach finding a
solution to the selected problem. In the problem-solving discussion,
students might be asked to:
 Identify the problem and provide examples or evidence
 Discuss root causes of the problem
 Discuss effects of the problem
 Propose possible solutions
 Evaluate the proposed solutions
 Select the solution(s) with the most merit
Below is a useful link with questions starters that encourage higher order
thinking.
The question starters move through 6 levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy and can be
used to develop comprehension and reflection questions for assignments and
discussions.
