A Lesson in Blueberries
Ben Grandon, from the Randolph Cooperative
Extension, will be at Toms Creek Nursery on
Saturday, June 10th
@ 10 am.
Ben will be discussing:
‘How to Successfully Grow Productive Blueberry Shrubs’
& ‘Pruning for Healthier Blueberry Shrubs’
High Bush is mainly grown in the Eastern states. They can
reach a mature height of 6’ – 12’. High Bush ripens about a
month earlier than Rabbit-Eye. Fruiting occurs April to
October; about 62 days after flowering. Cross-Pollination
increases fruit set & results in larger, earlier berries.
Rabbit-Eye is native to the Southeastern states. They
are called Rabbit-Eye because they go pink before
turning blue. These can grow up to 15’ high if they go
unchecked! Rabbit-Eye are a bit more Drought Tolerant.
They must have another variety, nearby, in order to
produce fruit. Blueberries ripen June through August.

Meeting Your Landscape Needs
Toms Creek is a Design/Build Company that will consult with you about your
personalized landscape needs; offering complete autonomy through the
landscape process. Very few companies offer such high quality of work in so
many areas. We strive to be the best at all we do, be it design, hardscape,
irrigation, water features or just planting a few shrubs.
No project too BIG or small.
Though we are best known for our large projects, we do many small
installations too, and quickly! Our main landscape crew can usually landscape an
entire average sized house in 1 to 2 days.
Want to work in your
yard? We can help!
Let Toms Creek do the
heavy work. We'll make
the beds, build the
walls/patios and even
install the larger trees and
shrubs.
You can then handle the
smaller planting at your
own pace.

Planting Tips
Unwrap plant or remove it from its container. Estimate from the size of the root ball
the depth and width of the hole needed. Width of the hole should be twice that of the
root ball. Depth should be a bit shallower to avoid pooling water and subsequent root rot.
To minimize difficulty of digging and growing in hard clay soil, TCN&L recommends
planting 2-4 inches above ground. As you dig the hole, add any soil amendments you
intend.
Chop clay with amendments until clay is well broken up, including some of the soil that
falls from the root ball. Situate plant in hole, then back-fill, leaving 2-4 inches of the top
of the root ball showing above ground.
Slope new soil so as to be level with the
top of the plants root ball. Tamp down.
End with 2-3 inches of aged pine-bark
mulch to shade roots and discourage
weeds. Water regularly until plant is
established and shows signs of growth.
Thereafter, about an inch of water per
week will keep most plants healthy most
of the time; do consult plant literature for
specific needs
