Many young people dream of becoming dolphin trainers. People may pursue a
degree in marine biology in order to achieve the goal of training dolphins. However, not

trainers. Marine biologists are scientists that study life in the ocean. Dolphin trainers

Trainers teach sea animals to do specific behaviors. Many of the trained behaviors
make it easier to care for them. For example, the animals are trained to allow humans to

samples. These behaviors make it easier for the trainers to monitor the animals’ health.
Trainers also teach the animals to perform tricks for audiences. Trainers educate the
public about sea animals through entertaining shows. The shows raise awareness
about how human activity affects life in the oceans.
Organizations have different requirements for trainers. Some places hire trainers
with very little experience. Other places require certificates from special animal
management programs. Most places prefer to hire trainers with a degree in a field like
animal behavior, biology, or psychology. Most places require their trainers to be SCUBA
certified. SCUBA stands for self-contained underwater breathing aparatus. The
aquariums want trainers to be able to use a breathing tank underwater. This allows
them to work with the animals underwater for long periods of time.
Although education and experience vary among trainers, there are some basic
requirements. These include commitment, positive attitude, and strong swimming skills.
Feeding, cleaning, training, keeping records, and educating the public are trainer
responsibilities. Trainers must develop a personal bond of trust with the animals they
train. They have to be available at all times of the day and night. Trainers must be able
to work on weekends and holidays, too. They are required to do many physical tasks
like cleaning out the animals’ homes. They also have to lift heavy loads of food and
other supplies. Trainers must be able to swim very well. They also have to work well
with others to keep the animals healthy.
