EPIC HERO ESSAY
You will write an essay in which you prove that Odysseus is indeed an epic hero. You must address two traits of the epic
hero and examine examples for each trait.
DUE DATE: Friday, September 26
Work Day: Monday, September 22
Peer Review Workshop: Tuesday, September 23 (you must have three PRINTED, TYPED copies for class
that day. Failure to come to class prepared will result in a loss of credit.)
REQUIREMENTS
 Four paragraphs
 Submitted to turnitin.com AND printed out for class
 MLA Format
o MLA Heading (1st page only; your name/my name/class/date in upper left)
o MLA Header (upper right; last name page number on every page)
o Title (regular font; no extra spaces)
o Double Spaced
o Font: Times New Roman size 12, Arial size 11, or Calibri size 11
INTRODUCTION:
 Start with a grabber.
 Give some brief background of The Odyssey (no more than three sentences)
 End the introduction with your thesis statement. Make sure the thesis includes the title/author/genre and a
statement of what you are going to say. Example: In Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, Odysseus is proven to be
an epic hero because he respects the gods and he is intelligent.
BODY PARAGRAPHS (X2):
 Start with a topic sentence stating the trait that is the focus of the paragraph.
 Present at least TWO examples (text evidence) for each body paragraph as support. These must be CORRECTLY
CITED quotes from the poem.
 Use the SSS method. For the significance, explain how the examples exemplify the trait you addressed.
 Conclude the paragraph/transition into the next one.
CONCLUSION:
 Restate (rephrase) the thesis
 Offer reflection – maybe discuss the relevance or importance of epic heroes in modern culture or give some
insight that readers should have attained through your examination of Odysseus as an epic hero

SSS RESPONSE PARAGRAPHS
SSS PARAGRAPH FORMAT
 Always start with a TOPIC SENTENCE (MAIN IDEA).
 SPEAKER: Who says the quote, and to whom is it spoken?
 SITUATION: What is the context of the quote? What is going on in the plot? Why is the author making that point?
 QUOTE: This is the evidence from the text that is proving your MAIN IDEA.
 SIGNIFICANCE: Why is the quote important? How does it prove your claim? Analyze how the quote proves your
claim. This should NEVER be summary of the quote; it explains in further detail how the quote proves your point. This
is the most important part of the essay because it is what YOU have to say about the evidence.
 Always end your paragraph with some CONCLUDING STATEMENT that wraps up your paragraph and relates back
to your main idea.
OPTIONAL: Create an SSS chart to help you brainstorm ideas for your paragraph [NOT REQUIRED].

CHOOSE EITHER #1 OR #2 – DUE SEPTEMBER 12
SSS #1: Books One and Nine:
Odysseus tells King Alcinous of his fame “for guile.” According to critic Bernard Knox, Odysseus tries to preserve his
reputation for “courage and intelligence.” These are values for which he stands, and to which he must be true. From what
you have read about Odysseus so far, do you think his reputation is deserved? Support your opinion.
SSS #2: Book Ten:
Eurylochus’ character contrasts sharply with that of Odysseus in this book. Analyze the aspects of Odysseus’ character
that are revealed through this contrast:
*How each feels about Circe
*What each wants to do after Circe has transformed the first group of men
*How Eurylochus criticizes Odysseus
*How Odysseys reacts to Eurylochus criticism
Book Twelve: DUE SEPTEMBER 16
Of all the monsters and perils that Odysseus and his crew face during their wanderings, which do you think is the most
terrifying? Why? Support your examples with details from the poem.
Books Twenty-One through Twenty-Three: DUE SEPTEMBER 22
Epic heroes are “larger than life” and usually of noble birth and legendary importance, with superhuman strength and
boundless courage. In these books, do Odysseys’ actions seem consistent with what you have come to expect of him as
an epic hero? Explain you answer.
