OVERVIEW OF TRAINING FACILITIES
Overview
1. The purpose of this section is to provide trainees, from friendly
foreign countries, with basic information on training
establishments and the general facilities available in India.
It also renders advice in respect of personal requirements and
administrative aspects.
2. The aim and scope of training being imparted in various
establishments are enumerated in the succeeding paragraphs.
Indian Naval Academy Cadets of
( INA)
3. The Naval Academy conducts ‘ab-initio’ training for Executive
Branch of (10+2) Entry and Naval Orientation training for Sub
Lieutenants (Direct Entry) of all the branches, cadets of (10+2)
Tech Entry and Graduate Entry Scheme. For the 10+2 Executive
entry, the cadets should have qualified with Level 2 Physics,
chemistry and Mathematics, as the main subjects.
INS Venduruthy
4. The following schools are situated in this establishment for
administrative purposes:
(a) Signal School.
(b) Anti Submarine Warfare School.
( c) Navigation and Direction School.
(d) Diving School.
(e) Seamanship School.
(f) Naval Institute of Education and Training Technology
(NIETT).
(g) Centre for Leadership and Behavioral Studies (CLABS).
(h) Maritime Warfare Centre (MWC).

5. The following training is imparted to officers and sailors:
(a) Officers. Professional training to officers of the Executive
Branch on the Long ‘C’, ASW, ND & Diving (clearance Diving
and Ships’ Diving) Specialisation Courses and Sub Lieutenant
Tech Courses.
(b) Sailors. Professional training to sailors on courses as
detailed in Part III (Sailors’ courses).
Centre for Leadership and
Behavioral Studies (CLABS)
6. The Centre for Leadership & Behavioral Studies aims to
provide the desired thrust and impetus towards the
development of Leadership qualities amongst officers of the
Indian Navy. The curriculum at this centre mainly covers
leadership, motivation, individual behavior, group behavior,
self empowerment, counseling, grievances, Naval Value
System and TQL.
Naval Institute of Educational and
TrainingTechnology (NIETT)
7. Scientific Orientation and Language Training (only if
specifically projected) are imparted to foreign trainees,
prior to Sub Lieutenant Technical courses and Post Promotion
courses for Special Duties Officers. Language training can be
imparted to sailors as well. This Institute is a part of INS
Venduruthy.
INS Dronacharya
8. The following training is imparted to officers and sailors in this
establishment:
(a) Officers. Professional training to officers of the Executive
Branch on the ‘Long Gunnery’ (Specialisation) Course and Sub
Lieutenant Tech Courses.
(b) Sailors. Professional training to sailors on courses as
indicated in Part III (Sailors’ courses).
9. The establishment conducts training on Leadership and
Management for all senior sailors.

INS Agrani
INS Hamla
10. The Naval School of Logistics, Catering, Management,
Administration and Computer Training is situated in this
establishment. The following training is imparted to officers
and sailors in this school:
(a) Specialised Training in Logistics and Management to
officers of all branches.
(b) Training in Divisional duties and Management to officers
of all branches.
( c) Professional training to sailors on induction into Logistics
Cadre.
(d) Professional training to sailors for higher rank
qualifications.
(e) Computer Training in Programming and Basic Systems
Analysis and Design, to officers and sailors of all branches.
INS Shivaji
11. This premier Marine Engineering training establishment for
officers and sailors conducts training as follows:
(a) Officers
(I) Professional training in Basic Engineering to Cadets of
10+2 (Tech) Scheme and Officers of Engineering and
Electrical Branches.
(ii) Training in Marine Engineering Specialisation to
officers of the Engineering Branch.
(iii) Basic and specialist training in NBC Defence and
Damage Control, including fire fighting.

(b) Engine Room Artificer Apprentices
(i) Professional training to Engine Room Artificer
Appren- tices on initial entry and for higher rank
qualifications.
(ii) Basic training in NBC Defence and Damage control,
including fire fighting.
(iii) Professional training is also given in Engine Room
Artificers and sailors of the Engine Room Branch for
romotion to Commissioned rank.
( c) Sailors
(i) Professional training to sailors of the Engine Room
Branch on initial entry and for higher rank
qualifications.
(ii) Basic training in NBC Defence and Damage Control
including fire fighting.
INS Valsura
12. Is the premier training establishment engaged in training
Naval personnel in Electrical, Electronic and Weapon
Technology / Equipment as follows:
(a) Officers.
(i) Training in Electrical Specialisation to officers of the
Electrical Branch.
(ii) Short Electrical courses to officers of other branches.
(b) Electrical Artificer Apprentices. Professional training to
the Electrical Artificer apprentices on initial entry and for
higher rank qualifications.

(c) Sailors. Professional training to sailors of the Electrical
Branch on initial entry and for higher rank qualifications.
School for Medical Assistants
(SOMA) / Institute of Naval
Medicine (INM) I
13. Professional training is given to sailors of the Medical Branch
on initial entry and for higher rank qualifications, includin
promotion to Commissioned rank. Training in certain medical
specialisations is also imparted to these sailors, in tandem
with INHS Asvini.
INS Chilka
14. In this establishment, ‘ab-initio’ training is imparted to sailors
of all branches.
National Institute of Hydrography
(NIH)
15. The National Institute of Hydrography is located within INS
Gomantak. The training on Hydrography is imparted to officers
and sailors as follows:
(a) Officers. Basic Long Hydrographic and Advanced
Hydrographic Courses.
(b) Sailors. Courses for Survey Recorder I, II and III Class.
INS Kunjali
16. The establishment is responsible for conducting courses for
Musicians.
INS Garuda
17. The following schools are situated in the establishment for
administrative purposes
(a) School for Naval Airmen (SFNA).
(b) Naval Institute of Aeronautical Technology (NIAT).
(c) School for Naval Oceanology and Meteorology (SNOM).
(d) Observer School.

18. The following training is imparted to officers and sailors of
Aviation Branch:
(a) Officers. Professional training in Aviation branch to
Mechanical/Aeronautical/Electrical Engineers and Executive
Officers.
(b) Sailors. Professional training to sailors on courses as
detailed in Part III of this catalogue.
Naval Shipwright School (NSS)
19. Professional training is imparted to shipwright Artificer
Apprentices on initial entry and for advancement to higher
ranks, including Commissioned ranks.
Inter-Service Establishments
20. Training to Naval personnel, at various levels, is also imparted
in the following inter-service establishments:
(a) National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakvasla.
(b) Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington.
(c) National Defence College (NDC), New Delhi.
National Defence Academy (NDA)
21. Joint training in the Academy is imparted to Army, Navy and Air
Force Cadets. On completion of training in the Academy, Naval
Cadets undergo sea training, followed by training in
professional courses in various training establishments,
depending upon the branch, as shown in Section V of this
catalogue.
Defence Services Staff College
(DSSC)
22. Training is imparted in the College to officers of the rank of
Lieutenant Commanders and above, so as to prepare them for
future staff appointments.
National Defence College (NDC)
23. Training is imparted in the College to officers of the rank of
Captain and above, to take up higher staff appointments.
