WETLAND FOOD WEBS
NAME
DATE
Draw your own wetland food web! Use the wetland or forest/riparian habitat
species you observed at the refuge or that we talked about in class for ideas.
Examples of items to include are as follows: Sun, Water, Duckweed, Algae, Tree
frog, Spider, Mallard, Fish, Great Blue Heron, Raccoon, Mosquito, and
Decomposers.
Label one producer and two consumers.
In addition to drawing the foodweb, answer the following analysis questions:
1. Describe the importance of two of your organisms in the food web. What do
they contribute to the system? What impact do they have on the flow of energy in
the system? What is their role?
2. Describe some possible effects that could occur if the organisms you referred
to in question 1 were removed from the food web by an event (such as a disease,
migration, extinction, etc.). What effects would have on the system as a whole
(describe each organism’s removal from the system separately)?
WERC Watsonville Wetland Food Web
Sit outside and observe all the living things in the Wetlands - the plants, birds, and insects. Look
for tracks or scat that give clues about wetland mammals. Look at the soil with your hand lens to
try to find any decomposers.
Fill in the wetland food web based on your observations. Label the producers, consumers, and
decomposers and name them if you can.
