Immersion in Santiago, Chile
Academic information: The University of the Andes is a private university that hosts students from
around the world. UTSA and the University of the Andes made a cooperative agreement in 2014.
1) Intensive Spanish course: Two sections Basic level and Advance level
This Spanish course is directed towards those who are beginning their studies in the language and
are interested in acquiring interaction tools for effective communication in everyday contexts of
social exchange. The interactive methodology of the course allows students to be able to
understand and use basic expressions, incorporate relevant grammatical resources. Students can
raise their Spanish proficiency one grade level if they devote themselves to their studies.
2) Chilean Economy and Business:
This course, taught in English, is an overview of contemporary Chile with focus on its historical
and economic background and current trends. The course combines lectures with UANDES
Faculty and guest lecturers, as well as visits and field trips to relevant historical and cultural
institutions. Students will visit businesses and hear lectures from business leaders as well.

Dates: July 2-28, 2017
Acceptances: Competitive admission. 15-20 students to be accepted.
Homestay accommodation: Homestays will allow students to practice their Spanish and learn more
about Chilean culture. All homestays are within ten minutes of the University. Homestays can
accommodate 1 or 2 students per household; all dietary needs accommodated.
University of the Andes: The 128-acre Campus at the University of the Andes offers a protected
and scenic environment surrounded by the Andes Mountains. UANDES is located in the northeast
part of Santiago and is 25 minutes away from downtown. The state-of-the -art buildings and
facilities offers students all they need for a great experience.
Business environment: In Chile, the environment is professional, with punctuality being very
important. Business lunches can be long, and face to face meetings are preferred over email and
telephone. When it comes to dress code, men generally follow a sophisticated European style, with
jackets expected to be worn, and dark conservative suits the norm. Women wear business dresses
and suits. The Chilean business culture is also much more welcoming of women in their workforce,
compared with many other countries in South America.

Safety: Santiago is a modern city and the area near the university is convenient and upscale.
Security: UTSA is a member of International SOS which, in the case of emergency, provides students,
faculty and staff with 24-hour medical, security and travel assistance worldwide.
Cost
COBi is offering this program for at a significantly reduced cost and will pay for:

Air transportation

Accommodations (“homestay” with a Chilean family)

3 meals per day
·
Cultural visits
Students will be required to pay for:
·
Tuition and fees 3-6 academic credit hours
·
$400 fee to COBi office
·
$150 fee to the office of International Programs
