Phrases

• How to identify Gerunds and Appositives.
• How Gerunds and Appositives are used in a
sentence.

Sentence Structure.
Gerunds:
A Gerund is a verb form ending in –ing that is used as a
noun.
For Example:
Sewing has never interesting me.
A Gerund Phrase is a Gerund and any compliments or
modifiers needed to complete its meaning.
For Example:
Her enthusiastic cheering drew people from
yards away.
Moving the chair was not easy.
Appositives:
An Appositive is a noun placed next to another noun to
identify it or to add information about it.
For Example:
My brother, Jean, will accompany me to the boat.
An Appositive Phrase is a group of words that includes
an Appositive and other words that describe it.
For Example:
Raji Pabijan, a distinguished geologist, will
speak at the Science Club meeting.
Appositives:
An Appositives Phrase that is not important to the
meaning of the sentence is set of from the rest of the
sentence by commas.
However if the phrase is important to the sentence,
commas are not used.
For Example:
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, our thirty-second
president, was the only U.S. president to be
elected four times.
When she went to Los Angeles, Jenny met the
famous actor Brad Pitt.
