Drunkard’s Path Block Assembly
1. Lay one Fabric #1 wedge shape on top of a Fabric #2 pie shape, right sides together and
matching notches (Figure 1). Pin together at notch. Aligning raw edges, match A corners
and pin. Match B corners and pin. Matching raw edges; add pins, as needed to ensure a
smooth seam.
2. Using a consistent 1/4" seam allowance and stretch or ease both fabrics, as needed, sew
seam to make a Drunkard’s Path block (Figure 2). Finger press seams toward darker fabric.
Press flat. The block should measure 4-1/2" x 4-1/2". Make 72 blocks.
3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 using Fabric #2 wedge shapes and Fabric #1 pie shapes to make
72 blocks (Figure 2).
4. Lay out four blocks as shown in Figure 3. Pin and sew blocks together in rows. Sew rows
together to make a larger block. The block should now measure 8-1/2" x 8-1/2". Make a
total of 36 blocks.
Broken Dishes Block Assembly
1. Join one Fabric #1, 4" finished half square triangle and one Fabric #3, 4" finished half
square triangle along their long edges to make a half square triangle unit (HST) as shown
in Figure 4. Press seams toward darker fabric. Make 144 HST units.
2. Lay out four HST units as shown in Figure 5.
3. Pin and sew HST units together into rows. Sew rows together to make a Broken Dishes
block. The block should now measure 8-1/2" x 8-1/2". Make 36 blocks.
Quilt Assembly
1. Lay out the blocks in nine rows of eight blocks each, alternating blocks in each row and from
row to row as shown in quilt photo.
2. Pin and sew blocks together into rows. Press seams in opposite directions from row to row.
3. Pin and sew rows together. Press seams in one direction. The quilt top should measure
64-1/2" x 72-1/2".
4. Join Fabric #1, 2-1/2" outer border strips end to end. From pieced strip, cut two 72-1/2"
strips and sew them to the sides of the quilt top. Press seams toward outer border.
5. From remaining pieced strip, cut two 68-1/2" strips and sew them to the top and bottom of
the quilt top. Press seams toward outer border.
