successful salo of cako and fancy articles in the lecture room of the
church Wednesday evening.
Dr. Walter S. James , o! Manhattan
and this place, has 'been signally honored-ln an appointment to head the
State Commission for study of the
feeble mladed and their needs, which
was created 'through legislation onacted last year. Dr. James has a large
practise and Governor Whitman. In
making the appointment said he appreciated tho sacrifice Dr. James whs
making in accepting a. public position
allow ing a salary of only ?5 ,000. The
other twomennbers of tho commission
are tho 'Fiscal Supervisor of the State
and the Secretary of tho Stato Board
of Charities.
It Is estimated that
there are 30,000 feeble minded persons
in this Stato.
Lata Monday af ternoon. MJJia 'Docclo, a little 8-year-old Italian girl, was
drowned near the Casino when sho
and a number of other children woro
p laying along the water front. The
cries of the other children brough t assistance immediately and one of tho
farmerettes employed at the Jennings'
estate stripped off and went Into the
water to rescue her. They wero unable to get the. child out until about
fifteen minut es after she had fallen Into tho water. Drs. Carter, Gibson
and Go'uloy responded to the call and
used a pulmoter, but without success.
The cliiid was the daughter of Louis
and Annie Bocclo and is survived by
her parents and three brothers and
sisters.
