Camp Odayin provides fun, safe and
supportive camp experiences and
community building opportunities for
young people with heart disease and
their families.
Program Update
What began as a summer camp for 53 kids in 2001 has expanded to include many
life-changing programs in the eleven years since. There are opportunities for children

with heart disease to experience the power of belonging during every season through
♥ A holistic approach to healing hearts camp programs and family gatherings. In 2012, 580 people attended a Camp Odayin
camp program as part of our “heart family”. While very little costs what it did in 2001, we

have continued to provide each of our camp experiences to camper for only a $25
independence, confidence and
registration fee. The actual per person costs of $500 for Residential Camp, $250 for Day
acceptance throughout our
Camp and $100 for Family Camp and Winter Camp were covered thanks to donors. We
campers’ lives
are grateful for the overwhelming generosity of our supporters.

reconnecting and enjoying fun in the snow, sledding, and snowshoeing.
Four sessions of Residential Camp were held at Camp Knutson in Crosslake,
Minnesota where campers ages 8-17 experienced five days of horseback riding, archery,
nature, arts and crafts, water sports and much more. 260 campers joined us from 15
states.
Five mornings of Day Camp were held at the Dodge Nature Center in West St. Paul,
Minnesota. Campers ages 6-7 met new friends while enjoying themed activities, arts and
crafts, nature and an introduction to our mission.
The Leader in Training (LIT) Program offered eight 18 and 19 year old former campers
the opportunity to mentor young campers and gain leadership skills during a week at
Residential Camp. Participants engaged with camper cabins as role models and spent
time developing competency in areas such as teamwork and responsibility.
In October, Family Camp welcomed a record breaking 59 families for a ‘Dr. Seuss’
themed weekend at Camp Wapo in Amery, Wisconsin. Parents, heart patients and
siblings laughed and learned along with other families who share similar life experiences.
The Scholarship Program provided tuition assistance to four former campers pursuing
post-secondary education. In addition, we awarded one scholarship to a summer camp
volunteer. The staff scholarship is presented annually to a camp volunteer enrolled in a
professional nursing, medical doctor, or pharmacy program.
The Volunteer Program consisted of 280 amazing people in 2012. Throughout the year,
these volunteers generously donated over 11,000 hours of their time providing support to
our events and programs.
Special thanks to the host sites for our 2012 camp programs: Camp Knutson (Residential
Camp), Camp Wapo (Family & Winter Camp) and Dodge Nature Center (Day Camp).

“My son is always on cloud nine after
camp and talks 100 mph sharing his
week. This year we picked up one of his
friends the night before camp and just
listening to those boys talk brought tears
to my eyes. They hadn't seen each other
since last summer camp but it was like
they had never been apart. So this year
we had the pleasure of "debriefing" two
boys after camp and it was a blast. We
laughed all the way home. They both
said it was the "best year ever." They
loved their counselors and their nurse.
This is truly the place where Parker feels
normal. He says it every year!! I am
always interested in what defects the
other kids have. Parker says, ‘Mom, like I
told you last year, we don't talk about
that, all I know is that we all have scars
and we can't run fast’. I love this.”
