English 11AP-Language and Composition
Below are the summer assignments for the English 11AP class for the 2014-2015 school year. Please
purchase a three-ring binder so you can keep all of your assignments, papers, etc. for the duration of the
year. Please feel free to email me with any questions, and I look forward to working with each and
every one of you in the fall 
Summer Assignment #1
Due: Wednesday, August 27th
Please obtain a copy of the book Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. It will be easier if this is your own copy
that you purchase so that you can write in it, make notes, etc.
Your assignment: As you read, create a double journal entry with passages from the book on the left and
your reaction on the right. As you read, you want to focus on any passages that you feel are significant
regarding Krakauer's writing style (think about diction, tone, setting, detail, theme, etc.)
You should have a total of 20 entries in your journal and please be sure to type them.
Summer Assignment #2
Due Wednesday, August 27th
Please obtain a copy of the book Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. As mentioned with the other book,
it will be easier if you can purchase the book.
Your assignment: Please read the novel and answer the following discussion questions on the next page.
Your answers should be thoughtful and insightful. Also, please pay close attention to Salinger’s
style/Holden’s voice. Please type responses.
Discussion Questions-Catcher in the Rye
1. What are your initial reactions to this book? What do you find you like, dislike, identify with, question?
If you've read it previously, to what extent has your opinion of the book been affected by your life
experiences since your first reading?
2. Can we find anything meaningful in the things and people Holden reports he likes and dislikes?
3. What does Holden mean by phoniness?
4. Discuss the significance of the title. What does it mean to be a “Catcher”? What do you think Salinger
thinks of Holden’s desire to be a Catcher?
5. Identify and explain a theme in the play.
6. Describe the significance of the following characters: Phoebe, Jane Gallagher, Holden's parents, Allie,
Mr. Antolini, James Castle.
7. Describe the significance of the following symbols: the ducks, the red hunting hat, the gold ring, the
museum.
8. Describe the influence Catcher in the Rye has on American culture and/or values within society.
