• In 1812 the United States was not really ready for war. The Army and Navy were weak and not properly trained in many instances.
• Navy consisted of only sixteen ships!! • At the beginning of the war, Britain blockaded American ports to stop trade. • Americans were unable to break the blockade but still won sea victories! 2

• Captain Isaac Hull of the USS Constitution won a battle in August 1812 against the British ship HMS Guerierre by tearing holes in its side and knocking down both its masts. The Constitution is docked today in what American port city? Boston!! 4

• Americans who wanted war with Britain were known as "War Hawks" • War Hawks wanted to conquer the land to our north, known as Canada!! Canada is the green area on the map to the left. General William Hull moved American troops into Canada from Detroit, located by the arrow.

• The small Canadian forces were led by British General Isaac Brock. Smart guy! Very clever. He dressed the small Canadian forces in redcoats to trick the Americans into believing they were experienced British troops. Other important battles:

Perry?? • Perry performed bravely at Lake Erie by rowing to another ship after his ship was destroyed. He led the Americans to a victory in the battle after taking command of another ship. 7

• Black Americans fought with courage and valor
in the War of 1812, especially at the Battle of
New Orleans, where Andrew Jackson became a
national hero
• Many New Englanders were against the war.
They organized the Hartford Convention in late
1814, consisting of mostly Federalists.
• They threatened to secede, or leave the Union
if the war continued.
• Peace treaty was signed on December 14,
1814 in Ghent, Belgium; Treaty of Ghent
• Britain and America agreed to restore prewar
conditions with the treaty saying really nothing
about impressment or neutrality.
