Washington’s Farewell Address
Before leaving office in 1797, George Washington makes a famous speech. Excerpts are below.
“….Why quit our own to stand upon foreign ground? Why, by interweaving our destiny with that of any part of Europe,
entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils of European ambition, rivalship, interest, humor or caprice?....”

George Washington was inaugurated in 1789 in New York City at a site
currently called Federal Hall. It is located at 26 Wall Street.
