We will soon begin our last unit focusing on Geometry and Statistics. Design Students are studying Ancient Greece across all subjects. Mr. Leavitt, an architect, came in and taught students about Greek architecture and its influence on the modern world. He tied in math and science but discussing ratios, compression, and tension. Students will work on projects in which they will create columns to support a textbook. Science In Science, students have studied what objects are made of cells and then explored the structure and function of cells. Students enjoyed using the microscopes to investigate cells and then created a model of a cell using the analogy of a city. Our next unit will focus on energy. 2 Language Arts Students worked on writing personal narratives with lessons/themes. Read Karissa’s story below! In February, students started a writing unit on literary essays. We spent Valentine’s Day writing special stories, poems, songs, etc. Students worked on Greek myths and performed a myth in Readers Theatre. We are continuing our study of poetry (ask them about the poem “Perseus”). In sentence composing, students are doing a lot of work on where to place “tools” (words, phrases, dependent clauses as openers, S-V splits, and closers) to make sentences more interesting. Tower of Terror by Karissa My tears flowed from my eyes, I felt my legs shaking, my heart pounded on my chest, and my sweat dropped onto the line of Tower of Terror. “Daddy do…d…do I really have to go?” I asked my dad. My dad continued to look forward. Ugh, he didn’t hear me. Maybe I should check how far we were in the line, I thought. I stepped to the side of the line and noticed that there was only five people in front of us. I looked to my dad then tugged on his jacket. “I don’t want to,” I stated. “Well, sweetie, we are already this far in the line. We can’t go back now!” he answered to my plead. More tears came out from my eyes. “I don’t want to,” I murmured. My dad and I were at the front of the line, waiting for the “elevator” to come. I felt my body shaking. I tried not looking at the elevator, yet my eyes were cemented to it. Please don’t open, I thought, my body shaking even more. I grabbed my dad’s arm and hugged it. Bing. I turned my attention back to the elevators and the opened. “AAAHHH!” I screamed. I felt my heart starting to beat hard. More tears came into my eyes while my eyelids blinked them out. “I don’t want to! I don’t want to!” I screamed. Too late. My dad was already leading me to the elevators. “NOOOO!” I yelled at the top of my lungs. I tried to loosen my dad’s grip on my wrist. Because of how weak I was, I could only lift up one of his fingers. I fell down dramatically to use my weight against the strength that my dad had. It was no use. My dad picked me up and carried me into the elevator. I was put down onto a seat. I cried and cried. I felt my dad’s wrist on my lap to keep me down. I started to kick and put my tiny little fingers under my dad’s wrist. I pushed up my dad’s hand a little bit, though not enough to get out of the horrid elevator. I felt something this slither onto my lap. I looked down, my dad was buckling me in. Click. I was trapped in my own seat. I looked up to see if the elevators will still open. Yes, I still have time to escape, I thought. I put my hand to the button to release the belt. Nothing happened. I repeatedly clicked the button. Still nothing. Bing. I looked up to the elevator doors that were starting to close. “Get me out of this dumb ride!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. Then, finally, there was darkness. After what seemed liked 5 minutes, my dad started to say, “Get ready!” I looked at him confused, then, I remembered. In a split second, the elevator dropped. My legs shook and I attempted to grab my dad’s hand, instead, I slapped it. I tried to grab his hand once again and I did. The elevator brought us up. It dropped once more. This, it was worse than the first one. This pattern continued and each one I tightened my grip on my dad’s hand. My eyes were tightly shut until suddenly the elevator stopped. “Daddy is it ove…” I was interrupted by another drop, though, this one was the worst. My body was lifted up from my seat. My heart started to beat a loud and unsteady beat which had no rhythm. “AAAAHHHH!” I screamed, so hard that it made my lungs hurt. We were brought back up and I sunk into my seat. Once again, another drop, yet not so harsh. The elevator brought us up. It stopped and then moved back. I opened my eyes. Is it over? I asked myself. Bing. I turned my head towards the elevator doors, the doors to “heaven” opened. I unbuckled my seat belt and ran outside to the outside world. I took a breath of relief. I turned back to my dad and skipped to hm. “So, how did you like it?” my dad asked. “Not at all, but at least I got to face my fear because if I didn’t go on it, maybe I would regret it,” I answered. I smiled to my dad, he smiled back. I held his hand and we both walked away from the Tower of Terror. Walking away a fear which I have faced. 3 History Ancient Egypt Museum Projects Our Ancient Egypt Museum was a success! The students enjoyed touring the museum and scanning QR codes to learn all about Ancient Egypt. Our next unit of study is Ancient Greece where we will learn and compare their geography, religion, achievements, politics, economics and social structure to other ancient civilizations. Art Students are creating color wheels. They were given only primary colors – red, blue, and yellow – and black and white. They mixed the colors to complete the color wheel. Students will then mix colors, to emulate Maxo Pierre’s (Haitian painter) art style. Spanish Restaurant Skits: Students are busy memorizing their lines for their restaurant skits. They should be able to order a meal in Spanish next time you visit any Latin restaurant. Congratulations to Yuna Lee (per.2/3), Ruth Simon & Anusha Puri (per.4/5) and Kathryn Nakahira (per.6/7) for winning our Trimester 2 Spanish Bee! 4 IMPORTANT PLEASE READ 1: 2: SBAC testing will begin in April.
