Principal’s Message
Dear Parents:
Please read below regarding opportunities for your child to take Virtual Courses during the 2014-2015 school
year. If you would like more information about online courses, please go to www-sjvs.stjohns.k12.fl.us or contact
your child’s guidance counselor for assistance. As a reminder, in order to graduate, all students (except current
seniors) must successfully complete one virtual high school course to earn their high school diplomas. Virtual
courses can be taken completely online or through a “blended” model in an on-campus BTHS course. We also
offer a Virtual Lab at school. At your request, your child can be scheduled to have a daily supervised class period
to work on his/her virtual course(s) during the school day. In order to accommodate these requests, a student
must declare his/her intent to take a virtual course during the 2014-2015 school year by July 17, 2014. There will
be no exceptions to this deadline as we must plan for seating, computer access, and supervision.
Sincerely,
Dawn Sapp

As stipulated by the Florida K-20 Education Code (s.1002.20 F.S.), parents have the right to choose
educational options such as SJVS or FLVS for their children. A student’s full-time school may not
deny access to virtual courses. SJVS is the provider of first choice for virtual instruction; however, in
situations in which SJVS cannot fulfill the need, students may qualify to access the services of FLVS.
The School Board shall provide students with access to enroll in courses available through SJVS or
FLVS and shall award credit for successful completion of such courses. Access may be available to
students during or after the normal school day and for FLVS, throughout the summer. Students
wishing to take courses from SJVS or FLVS must work closely with their guidance counselors to
ensure that courses fit in their Customized Learning Path (CLP). SJVS or FLVS is appropriate for
students who:
• have medical or behavior issues that may limit success in the traditional classroom
• need a more flexible schedule due to training or other extra-curricular endeavors
• need access to a course not offered at their school
• are home schooled.
Enrollment
MISSION
Mission
Students who wish to take advantage of courses offered by SJVS or FLVS must follow the
procedure outlined below:
• The student must meet with the school counselor to determine if placement
in SJVS or FLVS is academically appropriate for the student based on course
prerequisites as well as the student’s academic history, age, and appropriateness
of the course for the student’s Customized Learning Path (CLP).
• All petitions to take a course via SJVS or FLVS must be approved by the
student’s guidance counselor prior to the start of a new semester or summer
school.
• Once a semester has begun and the regular drop period has passed, a
student may not withdraw from a school course to enroll in the same
course online.
• A student may not be placed in the same course concurrently at a
district middle or high school and at SJVS or FLVS.

Student Drivers
The St. Johns County School District is pleased to announce its partnership with
the St. Johns County Tax Collectors Office to offer the Teen Defensive Driving course at
all high schools in the district. This 28-hour program teaches students defensive driving
skills as well as the relevant laws for operation of a motor vehicle and safe driving
procedures. The “behind the wheel” training includes braking, backing, parking, and lateral
control movements. Once a student can safely control a motor vehicle, 20 additional
hours will be spent with other students driving on a variety of roadways, including I-95,
with a certified instructor.
The reduced cost of the Teen Defensive Driving Program is $200 with a 10%
discount for a student who acquired his/her Learner Permit through the high school’s
course. Scholarships are also available for students who qualify for free or reduced
lunch programs.
Students can register by clicking on the Driver Education Classes link available at
the Tax Collector’s website at www.sjctax.us. Those who wish to attend must be at least
14.5 years old by the start of the first class. Students will be required to complete an
online registration form with their names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, high
schools, and requested class dates.

Traffic Report
As we get closer to the end of the school year, it is easy to become more relaxed
with our everyday routine. As a result of this, more and more students, whether driven to
school or driving themselves, are arriving late to school in the morning. Traffic stops have
increased as drivers enter the line, outside of school, and the most common offense is
cutting off other drivers especially without using a signal. The most frequent explanation
for the illegal action has been: “I am running late.” I am asking everyone, as you come to
school, if you are caught in the right hand lane and cannot merge, please proceed past
the school and make a U-turn. This will save you the headache of trying to get into the
turning lane and will help prevent a possible accident. I have also noticed an increase in
drivers stopping in the right hand lane as they wait for someone to come along and let
them merge. Again, I recommend going past the school and making a U-turn. Tickets will
be given to any driver who is blocking the lane of traffic.
If you are having trouble with traffic, please leave the house early and give yourself
enough time to get to school. The big push usually starts at 9:00 A.M. and continues
until the bell rings. All the issues with traffic can be solved if everyone works together.
Thanks,
Deputy Scott

Birthday Banners Displayed at
School Entrance
Hanging birthday banners on the school gate is a BT tradition.
Please be advised of the following:
• All banners are removed each day at 5 P.M. Banners hung
after 5 P.M. will remain there until 5 P.M. the following
day. Please wait for dismissal traffic to clear (approximately
4:10 P.M.) before attempting to remove a banner from
the gate. Please do not paint your banner after hanging
it on the school gate. Hanging an inappropriate banner
may result in suspension from school.
• Banners that are removed by BT staff will be stored in
the maintenance office and are disposed of each Friday.

Front Office Information/Requirements
We cannot accept items that are dropped off at the front desk; regardless of
whether your child calls to ask you to bring the item. This includes homework,
books, projects, etc. The ONLY exception is lunch or lunch money.
3:00 P.M. is the cutoff time for early check-outs, and on Wednesdays, it is 2:00
P.M. Sending in a note for early dismissal will expedite the process. Your student
should take the note to the attendance office between 8:30 A.M. and 9:00 A.M.
or during lunch. A pass for dismissal from class will be given to the student. He
or she can then meet you in the front office at the designated time. Please note
that during exams and standardized testing, we do not interrupt a class to send
for any students.
When students are ill, they should report to the clinic. If it is necessary for them
to be picked up, the call should come from the school phone located in the
clinic. According to school policy, students are not allowed to use cell phones
during school. Text messages should not be sent during the school day. Students
are required to use the telephone in the clinic to contact you for early release
from school.
A driver’s license or State issued photo ID are the only two forms of acceptable
ID when checking a student out of school.
All visitors and volunteers must sign in through the front office. A driver’s
license or State issued photo ID must be presented at time of sign-in.
A person is considered a visitor to the St. Johns County School District when he
or she is coming into a school for a one-time visit only.
A person is considered a volunteer if he or she provides service to support the
efforts of schools and departments in the District. Volunteer applications can be
found on the Bartram Trail High School website and are submitted electronically.

Guidance Update
The Bartram Trail High School counseling department has been busy
scheduling students for next school year. We successfully registered nearly 2,000
students in grades 8-11 for next years’ classes. We appreciate the support of the
administration, teachers, students, parents, and volunteers who helped make this
process a success. Students have until March 31, 2014 to make changes to their
schedules for next year. Rising 11th and 12th graders who are interested in taking
Dual Enrollment courses next year are invited to attend our parent/student Dual
Enrollment Information Session on the morning of April 17th. Please watch the
BTHS Announcements page closely for more information.
In November, our juniors heard academic advising presentations from the
school counselors. Each 11th grade student received a blue folder filled with
information about planning for the future. In December, a homeroom was held
during which students received their PSAT scores and heard a message from the
guidance department about interpreting their results. 12th graders received a
flyer regarding Bright Futures that included step-by-step application instructions,
requirements, and more.
In early February, all seniors attended a Financial Aid Information session
hosted by BTHS School Counselor, Mrs. Besley, as well as with the help of many
volunteers and school staff. Seniors were given vital information about local, state,
and federal scholarships; the FAFSA; and Bright Futures.

Bartram Highlights
Dreams Come True
5
Dreams Come True is a non-profit organization
dedicated to making “dreams come true” for area children
with chronic illnesses. These dreams range from mall
shopping sprees to week-long vacations in the Bahamas.
Thankfully, our club at Bartram has rapidly expanded over
the last year as we actively fundraise to meet our goal to sponsor
a child’s dream.
Last year, enough money was raised to send a dreamer and his family on an allexpense paid trip to Disney World! We have made it a mission as a club to double the
total raised last year with the hope of making two dreamers’ wishes come true. With
the help of our dedicated club members and gracious donations, we have exceeded the
final amount raised from last year via our car washes and men’s volleyball game.
As we actively work to make two “Dreams Come True,” we are happy to announce
that we will soon be hosting a Zumbathon. There will be more information soon, but
be prepared for a night filled with non-stop dancing and tons of fun! We would love
for everyone to be able to come out and help us support our future dreamer(s) as we
work to make Dreams Come True!
Annual High Q Student-Faculty Face-Off
On February 13, 2014, the High Q team held its annual Student-Faculty Match.
As part of the celebration of the successful High Q season this match is held just
prior to the end-of-the-year banquet. The faculty “celebrity” line-up was deep, and some
amazing people stepped in to round out the team. Representing the faculty were the
following: (from left to right) Ms. Jeffreys, Mrs. Deese, Ms. Young, Mrs. Abell, Ms. Wetzel,
Mrs. Jackson, Mrs. Keating, Mr. Duckett, and the amazing Coach Brown. Never in school
history have the students lost to the faculty, and the faculty didn’t break that streak.
However, they came very close with a head to head match the entire way. The faculty
lost but only by 2 points. The final score was 210- 208.
Students will be held to the code of conduct until graduation
is completed on May 31, 2014. Any senior who commits a violation
resulting in suspension between the dates of February 25 and May 31
is subject to loss of participation in significant senior events including
Grad Bash, Prom, and Graduation. Depending on the timing and
severity of the inappropriate action, attendance in one or all of these
events may be revoked.

Vystar
This week, VyStar Credit Union hosted its second Reality Fair this year for the second semester
Economics classes. The Reality Fair, in its second year, is a three-day financial literacy program for students
as they plan for the working world and self-sufficiency. Academy students who successfully completed the
program during the first semester embraced the most recent fair as a service-learning project
and helped facilitate the Fair for the second semester students.
During the Fair, students visited eleven booths all of which
require decisions based on the job, family, and net income that
was figured on the 1st day of the project. This is a life-learning
project that helps students realize what costs are involved as
they live as adults. One student was overheard exclaiming, “My
paycheck is gone, and I haven’t had any fun yet!”
Science
The 2014 Bartram Trail Science Olympiad Team competed at the
Regional Competition on Saturday, February 1st and took home the
gold by placing 1st place overall. The team proceeded to the State
Competition on March 15th at UCF. The students did an outstanding
job. For the past four years, the BT team has always come in 2nd
place and finally earned an exciting first place victory. The students
who competed were: David Damiani, Sofia DiMartino, David Malcolm,
Robert Snow, Hannah Giangaspro, Sarah Stinson, Jillian Brennan, Colin
Brant, Marisa McCarty, Brett Kochanowski, John Rush, Michael Durnin,
Carmen Dominguez, Yang Zhao, and Sydnee Vaughn.
BTHS AP Physics
On February 3, 2014, students of Advanced Placement Physics B took to the water at River Town’s
Olympic pool to demonstrate their boat construction prowess. Students used their knowledge of fluids,
Archimedes’ Principle, and basic engineering to determine the appropriate design and construction necessary
to build a boat that would hold the mass of the entire team as they navigated across the pool. Allowed to
use only cardboard, the students tested smaller prototypes for water resistance and other factors before
constructing their seaworthy crafts. After running five heats with variable success rates, many of the “sailors”
completed the full race. The winners of the race were Cody Gan, Liam Leahy, and Jesse Burkett with a time just
under a minute. A Spirit award was given to the pirates Matt Drabek, Jeremy Bauer, and Alec Rigsbee. Finally,
the last award was given to Madison French and Thatcher Madelly for their unfortunate best “Titanic” of the
day. There were numerous friends,
family members, and neighbors in
the community who attended to
support their favorite boats in the
race. It was a successful project,
and we are looking forward to
seeing the designs for next year’s
annual Cardboard Regatta.

Last week, Citibank presented “Women in Information Technology (IT)” to our BTHS female HOPE and
Career Academy students. Over 350 girls attended the presentation that showcases women in Information
Technology positions while also highlighting the critical shortage of women in these fields. Only 18% of
IT positions are currently held by women. In the inaugural year of the program, Citibank presented to all
St. Johns County middle and high schools during the week of March 7th. The informative and interactive
presentation prompted some thoughtful questions from the attendees and students commented that the
information was very enlightening.
Media Center News
We are taking a team to the St. Johns County High School Battle of the Books in April. The team will
be battling other high school teams on the knowledge of the 15 titles from the Florida Teen Reads selections.
Each student who has read a minimum of 3 titles can vote for his/her favorite title. Stop by the Media Center
for more information.
Overdue notices are being emailed home. If you received a notice, please come to the Media Center
as soon as possible to check your account. If you have questions or concerns, check with Ms. Smith or Ms.
Ruede. All library books are due May 16 and Media Center accounts need to be cleared before the end of
the school year. Students with calculators should make arrangements with Ms. Smith to keep their calculator
through final exams.
Book Room Deadlines
An email notice will be sent out to all students listing the textbooks that are checked out to them
during the first week of May. Please contact the Media Center if you have any questions about your account.
All Senior textbooks are due during Senior exams. Other students may return textbooks as soon as each
exam is completed. The last day for textbooks is Wednesday, June 4. All textbooks must be returned, or paid
for, before the last day of school.
Reading Leads to Success
The Television Production Department won 1st place at the State Literacy Week Public Service
Announcement contest for their PSA supporting the Reading Leads to Success theme. The students traveled to
Kennedy Space Center to receive the award; a $1,000 gift certificate to be used for literacy materials at BTHS
as well as they received congratulations from First Lady, Ann Scott. Dr. Joyner congratulated the students

Spirit of Bartram
On March 1st, the Bartram Trail Band
participated in the Florida Bandmasters’ Association
District Concert Band Assessment. The band earned
a superior rating for the 14th straight year! The
band was the only high school in St. Johns County
to earn a Superior rating. Last month at the solo
and ensemble event, BTHS students earned 119
superior medals! Bravo!
Election Excitement
Class officer elections are approaching. Student
elections will be held on May 2 in official St. Johns
County Voters’ election booths. Students will get
the full civics experience when they vote by official
ballot in a real booth. Every vote really does count!
Science Fair
On January 27th, one group from Bartram
participated in the St. Johns County District Science
Fair. Katherine Weber and Katarina Reznicsek
presented their project on the “Overpopulation
of Guppies.” The students spent the Fall semester
working on this project outside of the school day,
on their own time, and placed third in the district
in the category of Biological Sciences. The winners
of the school science fair receive a parking space
at the front of the school for the following school
year. Congratulations Katherine and Katarina!
Any students interested in participating in
Science Fair for the 2014-2015 school year should see
Mrs. Jackson in Room 825 and/or register for the
Experimental Science Course being offered next year.
“I Have a Dream” Dr.
