Provide a variety of oral storytelling techniques, styles and exercises to enhance OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: 1. Students will increase their knowledge and skill level of the use of storytelling 2. Students will understand when and where storytelling may be applicable in their lives and work. 3. Students will recognize the power of storytelling and will become aware of their own potential for using storytelling, as a TEXTBOOK: The Oral Tradition Today: An Introduction to the Art of Storytelling by Liz Warren. This textbook may be supplemented by other printed articles. COMMON COURTESIES: Please arrange to be in class, READY TO GO by the START of your class (see class times above). If you do happen to arrive late and someone is telling, PLEASE wait till they finish to cross the floor and find a seat. Please turn off your cell phones before coming to class. Late assignments will not be accepted . There are 6 reading assignments at 20 points each, for a total of 120 points. 4. In-Class Telling: Tell four (4) different stories in class. The stories will be from different genres, based on the class schedule. Folktale/Fairytale (50 points) Fact based/Family/Historical/Biographical (50 points) Personal Story (50 points) A one to two-minute Who Am I story (50 points) Each of the TELLINGS (except the Who Am I) additionally include: 1. Story Preparation Forms – check schedule for due dates in Canvas (copies of info can be found in the PAGES SECTION) 2. Storytelling Rubric(hard copy) are due at the next class AFTER you have told (found in PAGES SECTION) Print this form o 3. In Class Telling Report (INCLUDED IN THE ASSIGNMENTS SECTION OF CANVAS) is due according to the assignment sche (50 points each telling x 4 – Total of 200 points) 5. Outside-of-Class Telling:Tell stories to an audience of five or more people (at least 2 adults) outside of class. You can te 1. Print out an “Observation Form” (INCLUDED IN THE PAGES SECTION OF CANVAS), and 2. Have ONE of the adults fill it out and sign it. Hand it in to me. 3. Complete Your “Outside-of-Class Telling Report” (INCLUDED IN THE ASSIGNMENTS SECTION OF CANVAS) for the telling (50 points) 6. Family Folklore Interview:Interview a family member about their life and complete the assignment in CANVAS online. Storytelling Event: Students may meet this requirement with EITHER of the two options listed 1. Attend An EVENT: Attend a storytelling event and write a report evaluating the event and the performance (INCLUDED IN THE ASSIGNMENT YOU MUST ALSO: SUBMIT a hard copy of an EVENT PROGRAM or TICKET STUB or OTHER EVIDENCE THAT YOU ATTENDED OR 2. A VIDEO VIEWING: View a MINIMUM of three (3) DIFFERENT storyteller videos and write a report IN CANVAS evaluating each of the videos. NOTE: You may NOT use videos of Mark Goldman FOR EITHER OPTION YOU MUST ALSO COMPLETE and submit THE “STORYTELLING EVENT” ASSIGNMENT IN CANVAS (Total of 50 points) 8. Final Assignment: Due by 2 PM on the second to last day of the semester (CHECK THE SCHEDULE), ONLINE IN CANVAS a (200 points) 9.
