Publication11 - NOVEMBER

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR VETERANS
We have a number of GNH residents who have served in the military. We are very proud of them and
would like to recognize these men on November 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the recreation room. We have also decorated an area in the recreation room where we acknowledge each veteran and their branch of service where
they served. We personally thank ALL veterans of the United States for the time they served their country.

PLEASE NOTE:
With the holidays just around the corner, many of us
will be anxious to get out those special decorations.
A word of caution, however: No drop cords, surge protectors,
or multi-plug adapters are allowed in a resident’s room, nor
any “real” evergreen wreaths, seedlings, Norfolk pines, etc.
Doors cannot be completely covered in paper or plastic (per Iowa
State Fire Marshal). Also, only over-the-door wreath hangers
that allow the door to latch completely can be used. This is a
great time of year to make sure each room is in compliance. If
you have any questions, contact Steve Werner, Plant and Operations Director.
Thank you; we appreciate your cooperation.
HEARTFELT
THANKS
Thank you so much to our volunteers for
all your help and the time you spend
giving to others.
REMEMBER
FALL BACK
November 5 is the night to set your
clock back 1 hour because daylight savings time ends November 6.
Due to updated and new guidelines brought to us by CMS and IHCA an enhanced policy has been implemented to help protect everyone’s rights covered under HIPPA and Social Media. Therefore it restricts the
GNS in various facets such as we cannot take pictures for you of your loved one (i.e posing for a family picture). We also ask/encourage that you be mindful of who is in the background of pictures that you take at the
GNS. If you have questions please see Kristi Smith LBSW, Social Services Director.
Happy Birthday

THANKSGIVING
SERVICE OF THANKS
In Our Prayers
GNH residents and employees extend their
deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Mary
Jane Boeckenstedt, Lois McDowell, Dula Bockenstedt
and June Koehler, who recently passed away. They will
surely be missed by everyone!
COOL WEATHER
For Your Many Years of Service
A special service of thanks will be held at the
GNH on Wednesday, November 23, at 11:00
a.m. in the chapel. Family members are welcome to come and give thanks with your residents.
WARMER CLOTHES
As fall approaches we will be bringing out our fall/winter wardrobes. A reminder to all
residents and family members that each piece of clothing needs to first be taken to the nurses’ station or laundry to be marked with an iron-on fabric name tag before giving to residents to wear.
Unmarked items cannot be identified and may be misplaced. Contact GNH if you have any questions. We
appreciate your help!

COMING SOON: Neighborhood Villas
Our Independent Living Project on the east side of our campus is in progress. The new
road is being constructed and the infrastructure for the Neighborhood Villas is underway.
We have relocated the electrical and gas lines to service Marietta’s Place. The first units
are on order for the Neighborhood Villas and in production with Rochester Homes, out of
Rochester, IN. We are excited about the expansion of our services on the Good Neighbor
Society campus and will inform you through “The Roomers” as we have updates. The
Neighborhood Villas will accommodate people aged 55+ who are seeking to simplify their
responsibilities while maintaining homeownership. For more information about the Neighborhood Villas,
please see the brochures located at the front offices of both the Good Neighbor Home and The Meadows.
For specific inquiries, please contact Rick Colby, CEO or Jessie Tibbott, CDD.
Believe it or not, the holiday season is nearly upon us and you
know what that means… lots of
great food! Family members and
friends are welcome to join their
loved ones for any of the upcoming holiday meals. The cost for
each holiday guest meal is $8.00.
This charge applies to the lunch
meal on Thanksgiving Day and
Christmas Day. If at all possible,
we encourage making reservations one week in advance for
these holidays either through contacting the main desk or Dining
Services Director Katie Edgington.
PLEASE REMEMBER...
Families should let the GNH know
two days in advance if residents
are going out for any holiday. A
reminder that any time a resident
leaves the facility on an outing, the
responsible person must sign
them out at the nurses’ desk.
The Halloween Parade
was again a success! It
must have been a record
amount of folks as most
residents ran out of candy
by the end of the night.
They enjoyed the many
children and their costumes that stopped at their
doors to trick-or-treat!
Resident Profile - Lela Thomas
Lela is the highlighted resident for the month of November. If you do not find
Lela in her room you most likely will find her playing cards down by the office.
Others that play cards with her always chuckle telling us that she would play
cards all day every day if she didn’t have to stop for meals and bathroom
breaks. Lela was born December 5 in Gorin, Missouri. She is a Gorin High
School graduate and then got her real estate license attending the necessary
36 hours of classes in various places such as Des Moines and Cedar Rapids.
Her first job was at Right Way Realty in Guttenberg, IA, then with Alvia Realty
in Alvia, IA, and eventually at F & M Realty in Manchester. On July 17, 1952, she married John Thomas
(deceased). She has four children: Carol (Charles) Dighton, Manchester; Mark (Lila), Marion; Jeff (Donna),
Earlville; and Bill (Laura), Manchester. Lela also has 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Lela is a member of the Earlville United Parish. At the Good Neighbor Home she loves playing cards, of
course, and also does embroidery and some computer games when resting in her room. She looks forward
to weekly games of bingo and has a wonderful sense of humor throughout the games. When younger, Lela
enjoyed the thrill of casino games with friends so continues to enjoy the games provided here at Good Neighbor Home for her.
So stop in sometime and visit with Lela. Catch her up on the happenings in the area and even join her for a
game of bingo most Tuesdays. Congratulations, Lela.
South Campus Lighting Project Completed
As the summer’s daylight hours are getting shorter, have you noticed the
new lamp posts added to the South end of the GNS Campus along McCarren Drive? If you recall, the North Campus had lamp posts installed in the
spring of 2015 and they proved to not only be beautiful but also very utilitarian, providing guests, family members and staff with much needed illumination during the evening and overnight hours.
It was the plan to continue with the new lamp posts as funding became
available and thanks to the generosity of the Betty Mullis Family, lamp
posts for the South Campus were able to be added this summer. Betty lived
both at The Meadows with her husband Jake and also spent time at the
Good Neighbor Home.
The expansion added 9 additional lamp posts along McCarren Drive from
GNH’s loading dock South, to the Sunshine Drive Hallway exit (by the new
access ramp) and also up the sidewalk toward the main entrance of the GNH
by the Business office.
GNS’s board and staff express our sincere thanks to the Betty Mullis Family
for this generous addition to our campus.
Do you want to enjoy a real tree this holiday season? Then consider getting your
tree from Wendt Tree Farm (Bob Wendt). Bob is giving away Christmas trees on Saturday and
Sunday, December 3 and 4 and December 10 and 11 from 1:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. If you would like to
make a donation in return for Bob’s generosity, you can make a tax-deductible gift to the Good Neighbor Society (Manchester). For questions or to make an appointment contact Bob Wendt, (563) 608-9150.
