Georgia Basketry Association GBA Newsletter March 2015 President’s Message As I sit here working on the information for Annette for the newsletter I'm seeing something that I haven't seen in a while-blue skies and the sun! And I'm starting to hear my backyard birds singing. Hopefully, Spring is upon us. It was a long, cold, snowy and dreary winter for most of us. For a lot of us on a personal level too. But I have to say the highlight of my winter was Baskets to Love, the 2015 GBA convention. Kathy Cosgrove and Lillian Ansley did a fantastic job putting on this convention. There are many challenges in hosting a convention at a new venue but they and their committee chairs made it look easy (I know that it wasn't!). And here's the great news-they've agreed to do it again (there may have been some begging and tears on my part...)! They both told me that they would like to continue to work with the Marietta Hilton to ensure that the convention is the best that it can be for the students, teachers and vendors. Now that's dedication and commitment and I can't thank these two wonderful women enough. Thank you, thank you, thank you Kathy and Lillian. Sadly, Bob passed away on 2/14/15 but I thank those that stepped up and helped me get to the hospital quickly after the convention so that I could be with my family and for the cards and kind words. RIP Bob. Tracey Membership Dues GBA membership dues must be paid by July 1, 2015 in order to be eligible for “First Day” status for convention. Page 3 GBA Newslette r Ma rch 2015 GBA President Tracey Reidy Featured in Gwinnett Daily Post Our own Tracey Reidy was featured in a March 7 article in the Gwinnett Daily Post! The story focuses on Tracey’s need to weave while working for the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office. The story summarizes Tracey’s way of escaping the stress of her job as an investigator, often leaving her to deal with sad and disturbing cases. A 1985 basket class, led by our own Dot Glover, was the catalyst for this unusual diversion. Weaving to cope led to Tracey helping to form the Gwinnett Basket Weavers Guild and her role as president of GBA. Since retiring in 2012, the drive to weave every weekend has waned. The need to weave to forget things has stopped and now she can weave for herself. Guild News Pictured above, reporter Josh Sharpe and photographer David Welker from the Gwinnett Daily Post at Tracey’s house amongst her many, many baskets. Josh is especially excited to be featured in a story here in our newsletter. Save the date for Baskets and Friendship 2016 The theme and date have already been confirmed. Baskets and Friendship 2016 will take place at the Marietta Hilton and Conference Center on February 5, 6 and 7, 2016. Be sure and save the date! We also appreciate all the new members and first-timers. Woohoo!! We are so happy you joined us. The Christmas tree raffle raised $300 for the American Cancer Society so special thanks to all of you who submitted raffle tickets for the tree. It has been a long standing tradition that every raffle ticket entered for the tree commits $1 from GBA to the American Cancer Society. While raffle and door prize donors are recognized elsewhere, we want to thank the donors to the goody bags. They include: DELS, Basket Cruise 2016, Gwinnett Guild, Suzanne Moore, Handmade NC Baskets, Greater Atlanta Basket Guild, Roswell Basket Guild, Cornerstone Baskets and the Goody Bag Committee members. We also want to thank everyone who completed the survey. As many of you know this was our first time at Hilton Convention Center in Marietta so feedback was particularly important. The overwhelming majority of responses were very satisfied or satisfied with the convention. At the same time, we uncovered some areas that need improvement. Some we can fix and others we have addressed with the hotel. We know we need more space. This is the first time in a while where all classes chosen by the committee actually made. As such, we ended up with a full list of teachers and had more vendors too. So we were left accommodating everyone in the original space we contracted. Next year will include more space and some additional improvements. And speaking of next year, we appreciate all of you for encouraging Lillian and me to chair convention again next year. After lots of discussion, we agreed and look forward to announcing soon your 2016 committee and plans for next year. The theme and date have already been confirmed. Baskets and Friendship 2016 will take place at the Marietta Hilton and Conference Center on February 5, 6 and 7. Be sure and save the date! We enjoyed a marvelous holiday luncheon at Douceur de France in December. In addition to convention, our members have been treated to basket classes by members Pattie Bagley and Nancy Skinner. Kathleen Fosha will be sharing her expertise in March and April while the group completes quatrefoil twill baskets designed by Annetta Kraayeveld. Kathleen will be greatly missed after her move this summer and we thank her for her dedication to our group! Page 10 GBA Newslette r Ma rch 2015 Guild News Gwinnett Basket Weavers Guild The Gwinnett Basket Weavers Guild celebrated our 29th Christmas celebration in grand style at the home of Beth Weatherford and Debbra Gordon. During the party we have a basket ornament exchange (of course!) and it's always so fun to see what our members have come up with as their ornament for the year. It's quite the "competition" but the clear winner is always Dot Glover and we all envy the lucky lady who gets the "Dot!" This year Dot wove a miniature version of her napkin basket complete with miniature green napkins. Ok, ladies, time to start planning your ornament for December 2015! If you are looking for a fun, active and close knit Guild, please come to GBWG! For our January project we made Penguins! An assortment of ribbons, bows, pom pom balls and pipe cleaners were provided so that each penguin was unique and they all turned out adorable! It was a fun project for the dreary days of January. See pictures to the right! In February most of our members attended the GBA convention which took the place of our regular meeting and from what I've heard a terrific time was had by all and some wonderful baskets and memories were made. In April we will be taking our 2nd Annual Spring retreat in the lovely north Georgia mountains to the Tate City (near Clayton) home of Ann Massey. Lots of food, friendship, fun and oh yes, baskets on tap for the weekend. Pictures in the next newsletter! www.basketweavingsup plies.com has an angel ornament pattern available that can be easily altered to become the GBWG perguins! Page 11 GBA Newslette r Ma rch 2015 Guild News Shooting Creek Basket Weavers Guild October 8 , 2014 "Black Walnut Teneriffe" taught by Fonda Haddad Above are gourds, one with Halloween design and another without. In Tenerife lace, the wheel-like motifs are made separately. The thread is first taken to and fro across the fabric-covered circular cards or blocks around pins stuck round the edge. Once these radial threads are in place the pattern is woven in with a needle. The finished motif is released by removing the pins and the motifs are later sewn together. In November, SCBWG member Linda Vanderlaan taught us how to weave baskets on natural tree branches.
