BETHANY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Term 2 - Week 7 16th June 2016 Newsletter Week 7 Week 7 is already here and we have enjoyed a long weekend. This gave us the chance to stay away after a number of students contracted ‘gastro’ last week. Please make sure that you keep your child home if they show any symptoms like vomiting or diarrhoea for at least 24 hours after these symptoms have stopped. We have been reminding our students to keep up their healthy habits of thorough hand washing and using Memory Verse: "For even the son of man came not to be served but to serve others" Matthew 20:28 IN THIS 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 ISSUE From the Principal Deputy’s Corner Term 2 Highlights Community News Sports Department Sports Department Sports Department Sports Department Weekly Information sanitisers before eating. Thank you for your support with this important issue. Our teachers spent the day on Friday together learning about a number of different things. One of them was the program Circle of Security. We have an Occupational Therapist who has been working with us, and, would like to start this program at Bethany. The program reminds us to be bigger, stronger, wiser and kind. I found this a very helpful way to look at relationships and the challenges that we often face in knowing how to best relate to our children. I was also reminded that God is bigger, stronger, wiser and kind as He relates to us as His children. I know that people can have very different experiences and these impact our ability to relate to others in helpful ways. This program gives practical strategies to help us to grow as a community. We also spent more time working on our new report format to make sure that we are accurately reporting student progress. I hope that you find the new layout helpful. Our OSHC continues to grow steadily and I am hearing very positive feedback about the service. If you have been thinking about before or after school care, I would encourage you to either check it out on our website or drop in and talk to Rebecca any day before or after school. Our Adult English Conversation Class has started up again and is running weekly 2:30-3:30pm on Tuesdays in the ESL classroom, all are welcome to attend. On the 26th of May, Marie Klaproth welcomed Elijah Lane Klaproth in to the world. We are very excited for Marie and her husband and have included a picture of this new addition to our community. Also Mrs Robyn Curtis has gone on maternity leave and we welcome Mrs Alexandra Hall to our Year 6 team. We also look forward to meeting Robyn’s little person in the coming weeks. As we head to the end of our term, more sickness tends to hit with the colder weather. Please be vigilant by keeping sick children home to rest and recover so that we all can continue to come to school ready to learn. I hope that you are enjoying the new emailed version of this newsletter and can see how we are being responsible to our environment through reducing printing. If you do have any difficulty receiving this newsletter, please contact Karen in the office or by email. [email protected]. Have a lovely weekend, Wendy Matear Principal DEPUTY’S CORNER From The Deputy I do hope as you are reading this you are keeping warm and well and that you have not been caught out by the colder weather! I also hope you all had a wonderful long weekend with your families. I received an email the other day from a Leadership group who wrote an article titled, “Don’t Ruminate”. Intrigued, I read on. Their opening statement was; “Cows "chew the cud" or "ruminate" when they bring up food from their stomachs and chew it over and over again. Although we don't do this with food, we can tend to ruminate with our thoughts. To ruminate means to bring past and usually unpleasant experiences back up to the surface to think about them over and over again. It is easy for us to keep replaying these scenes in which hurt or conflict have occurred and keep watching the re-runs for months, even years.”(acuteleadership.com, 14 June, 2016) So why as human beings, do we tend to ‘ruminate’ with our thoughts? It is a thinking process, one that is highly negative as it sends the thinker into a down- 2 wards spiral of reflecting and remembering past hurt or conflict that may be fresh or quite old. It is like watching re-runs replaying bad memories. Ruminating is really unhelpful as it does not resolve the problem. It just evokes stronger feelings of anger, hurt, betrayal, frustration or some sense of justification on how we feel towards the alleged offender. This downward spiral of thinking also often blows the original incident out of proportion. So what is the cure? Often when it is evident an individual is thinking negatively and re-living past pain it is helpful to make them aware of what they are doing and to help them see there is no value in ruminating. When students make a poor choice I explain it is like hitting a speed hump – all they need to do is keep going and try not to dwell on the past. Some people find this easy, some find it a little more challenging. The best part of it though, is with practice, everyone gets better at moving on and making a fresh start! The School Peace-Wise Model (found on page 7 of the student diary) shows Bethany Christian School Newsletter 2016 a sliding scale of conflict ranging from peace-faking (denial) through to peace-breaking (aggression). Ideally we want everyone to work in the peace-making (middle section) whereby being honest and open about their role in the conflict, the issue can be resolved peacefully. A negative mindset will send an individual to either side of peace-faking or peace-breaking, whereas a positive mindset (that is, not ruminating about past hurt but actively dealing with it) brings about peace-making. I’ll leave you with the final thought from the email; “The longer we dwell on our misfortunes the greater is their power to harm us.” -Voltaire I wish you and your family well! God bless you, Deb Clifford Deputy Principal TERM 2 HIGHLIGHTS Premiers Reading Challenge Thank you to those who are participating in the Premiers Reading Challenge. Do you have a child aged from 0 to 18years? Would you like the chance to win a $100 prepaid VISA card? USQ is looking for parents of children aged from 0-18yrs (with and without food allergies) to participate in a study on Australian parents’ food allergy knowledge and feeding. Australia has one of the highest rates of food allergy in the world yet little is known about food allergy knowledge and how it affects how parents feed their children. This study is investigating food allergy knowledge, attitudes and beliefs, childhood feeding and allergies in children. Participation involves completing an on-line survey which takes about 15-20 minutes. The research study has received ethical approval from USQ. Follow this link to participate: https://psi.usq.edu.au/ols/?p=FALG15a For more information, contact Louise Allan: [email protected] Bethany Christian School Newsletter 2016 3 COMMUNITY NEWS Enrolling Students at Temple Christian College If you are considering enrolling your child for Year 7 at Temple Christian College, please contact Temple Christian College for an Application Form. In the past, we have suggested that families fill these in from Year 5 onwards, but due to the growth of the school and interest from families outside of Bethany Christian School, it is essential that we have your Application Form as soon as possible, so we can plan future numbers. Bethany Christian School students still have first priority, but only if we know your child is coming. There is no cost involved in applying, so whether your child is in Reception or Year 5, please get your Application Form to us as soon as possible and reserve your child’s position. For Application Forms or for more information, please contact the Enrolment Registrar Linda Hunter on 8256 9600.
