Just like roots are essential for trees to bloom, volunteers are essential for communities to bloom. Thanks to volunteers, our communities grow strong and resilient. Even the tiniest volunteer effort leaves a profound and lasting trace in a community, much like tree rings that appear over time. Nanaimo Community Hospice appreciates the dedication and commitment of each and every volunteer (about 250) that give of their time and talents. Nanaimo Hospice will combine a 35th Anniversary Party for volunteers with our annual Volunteer Appreciation BBQ at Hospice House on Friday, September 9th to thank all of you in person. Hospice will provide all of the food and hope that you will join us for good eats and good company! ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Circle of Sharing (A movie afternoon with popcorn!) Being Mortal (Frontline) – A film with Atul Gwande Tuesday, April 26 from 1 until 3 pm Facilitated by Shannon Farahbakhsh, Program Coordinator Death is something we will all one day face. So why is it so hard for doctors to talk with their patients about dying? How can the medical profession better help people navigate the final chapters of their lives with confidence, direction, and purpose? Renowned surgeon and New Yorker writer Atul Gawande explored those questions in his bestselling book, Being Mortal. Now, Gawande teams with FRONTLINE to bring his personal journey – and the stories of his patients and their families – to life and challenges us all to re-examine how we think about death and dying. This workshop is limited to 20 participants. (There will be popcorn.) Please phone or e-mail Debbie P 250-591-8811or [email protected] to reserve your space. If you RSVP and find you can’t make it please let us know so we can offer your spot to someone on the waiting list. Dahlias, sunflowers and Gerbera daisies, for sure. Colour? Green Music? Country Music and stuff from the 50’s and 60’s What brings you joy? My grandchildren, spending time with my family & friends, reading, walking & being outdoors exploring this beautiful island we are blessed to live on – so many things really… What is your favourite thing about working at Hospice? When I go out into the community to speak about the programs and services offered here at Hospice House and in the Palliative Care Unit, I love hearing about how respected and appreciated people are about the loving, care and commitment provided by our amazing volunteers and staff. I often have folks stop me and tell me how grateful they were that Hospice was there for them – saying things like “your volunteers are like angels – such special people” or “thank you for what you do - Hospice saved my life”. It makes me proud and honoured to work among you all. ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Virtue Pick - Respect Respect is an attitude of honouring ourselves and others as people of value. We care for each person’s dignity. Everyone has the right to expect respect. WE show respect in the courtesy of our words, and in our tone of voice. We are all exquisitely sensitive to respect. We treat others as we would like to be treated; we raise the level of trust and peace in our relationships. Respect is having reverence for the earth and all living things. When we live respectfully, we are a source of grace in the world. “There is a longing among all people and creatures to have a sense of purpose and worth. To satisfy that common longing in all of us we must respect each other. ~Chief Dan George I treat myself and others with dignity. I speak and act with courtesy. I am a peace builder. I expect respect at all times. I honour the sacredness of all life. I live graciously. I am thankful for the gift of Respect. It helps me to handle life with care. ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ HOSPICE LIBRARY – A BOOK REVIEW The Hospice library is an up to date and comprehensive resource for clients and volunteers Life Lessons: Two Experts on Death & Dying Teach Us About the Mysteries of Life & Living, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, M.D. & David Kessler – Life Lessons guides us to heal what is broke and to open ourselves up to love and happiness and to live meaningful and fulfilling lives. Visions, Trips, and Crowded Rooms: Who and What You See Before You Die, David Kessler – In the tapestry of life and death, we may begin to see connections to the past that we missed in life. Gary started volunteering at the Hospice Shoppe in 2007. For the last 4 years his time was spent at the Bowen Rd. store. He was always a joy to be around, his giggles were so delightful and he loved getting and giving big hugs to all us ladies who worked with him on his Tuesday morning shift. Gary's knowledge of woodworking was a great asset as I could call on him for advice on the quality and value of certain furniture pieces that were donated and he would even take on projects by taking some of them home to restore. He also kept our bellies full with all the donuts and muffins he’d bring from Tim Hortons’s to share at coffee time. Gary was a valuable asset to our little shoppe and he will be greatly missed. ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ “Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force… The Friends that listen to us are the ones we move towards, and we want to sit in their radius as though it did us good, like ultra violet rays…When we are listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand. Ideas actually begin to grow in us and come to life… it makes people happy and free when they are listened to…When we listen to people there is an alternating current, and this recharges us so that we never get tired of each other. We are constantly being recreated…I just listen with affection to anyone who talks to me, to be in their shoes when they talk.” ~ Clark Moustakas
