Moerings Sempergreen is a plant provider that does not sell green roof systems.
We provide vegetation only.
This is a performance spec, that lists a perfect assembly of components that function optimally as a single
concept. All these components, with the exception of the vegetation, are brought to the market by others.
Moerings Sempergreen sells vegetation (only). Please check with your Single Source Warranty Roof
Manufacturer or Green Roof system provider for pricing and availability.
Purple-Roof®
The Purple-Roofs concept is a non-proprietary performance based system that is available
through many manufacturers.
Purple-Roofs are instant vegetated roofs that utilize vegetation as a twofold tool to protect
the soil and resist runoff. Also, Purple-Roofs utilize 100% natural materials to retain the most
water and use conventional drainage plates to breathe. Purple-Roofs aim to mimic nature and
create a living root zone that is self-supporting. Purple-Roofs successfully minimize and
eliminate fine particle and fertilizer run off.

Purple-Roof® 2016 – Hardgoods Specification
1. ROOT BARRIER
The purpose of the Root Barrier is to act as a physical barrier that prohibits roots from piercing through and
potentially causing damage to the waterproofing membrane. The required type of Root Barrier (if any) should
be confirmed with the roof membrane manufacturer.
2. DRAINAGE LAYER
The purpose of this polystyrene or polyethylene Drainage Layer in a green roof assembly is 3-fold. Most
importantly it must provide adequate airflow, to allow for proper oxygen exchange in the Growth Media root
zone. This is critical to support soil biology, root development and to avoid harmful anaerobic pathogens from
dominating the root zone. Next, the structural layout of the Drainage Layer should reasonably slow down the
transient water that percolated vertically through the green roof assembly to cause a peak flow delay. Thirdly,
the Drainage Layer should provide water storage capacity to increase the retention capacity of the green roof
assembly.
3. Edging:
The purpose of aluminum edging is to neatly retain the green roof assembly in place and/or keep the ballast
from being contaminated by invading plants. The bottom of the edging should be perforated and should not
be a major obstacle to the water flow. It is important that the thickness of the edging is adequate to support
foot traffic and does not bend or twist easily.
4. Drainage Box:
The purpose of the drainage box is to cover the drainage openings on a roof with a metal or plastic chamber
box that has slotted or perforated sidewalls to allow water to move freely. A lid on the drainage box allows for
inspection of the roof drains, is wind resistant and requires a clip or screw to stay in place during storms. The
Maintenance crew will open, inspect and clean this box, when necessary to avoid any disruption in the flow of
water.

Purple-Roof® 2016 – Needled Mineral Wool Specification
“Water retention that supports life”
1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Needled Mineral Wool (NMW) is a mechanically engineered, fire-resistant product consisting of a
mixture of mainly basalt, diabase and dolomite. The physical integrity of the NMW is achieved through
the inter-twining (needling) of natural mineral wool fibers at a specific thickness and a specific mineral
fiber density. The density of the NMW must not be less than 130kg/m3 and preferably not more than
150kg/m3. NMW is made of completely natural raw material (pure rocks) and is completely free from
any organic or inorganic binders, as well as any other fiber coatings. This enables the NMW to naturally
provide the long term water-holding performance specified. Unlike hardboard or binder-bound
rockwool fibers, NMW fibers are free to expand and contract; therefore, they are unaffected by freeze
and thaw cycles.
2. NOTES FOR DESIGNER
Notes: At the time of installation, the NMW is 1" thick and is expected to compress slightly. The NMW
will compress 10-15% at 150lbs/ft2 applied pressure. ASTM testing protocol # 2399 determines the
retention capacity to be 90%+; and that is the number to be used when you calculate the retention
capacity if one wants to comply with regulations. The NMW always needs to be installed on a drainage
layer so that the material has 15-20% oxygen capacity at its maximum saturated point in order to sustain
soil biology and root development. It is also important to store the NMW dry.

Sempergreen® 2016 – Soil Specification for Sedum mat installations
“Soils that provide life”
Semi-intensive growth media for green roof systems with a separate drainage course or a synthetic drainage layer, with
or without the additional needled mineral wool layer, designed specifically for green roof assemblies with specified
biodegradable Sedum Blankets of Moerings Sempergreen.
Growth media shall consist of a mix of light weight combined with organic components, containing all the physical,
chemical, and biological properties to create a sustainable landscape that mimics nature and encourages microbial soil
health with the goal to grow healthier plants, reduce runoff, eliminate irrigation and minimize the need for synthetic
fertilizers.
(a)
Bulk density of growth media at the correct installed thickness after compression must be at or below the maximum weight
limitations of the roof as set by the engineer.
(b)
Mixing of Growth Media
(c)
a)
Insure that all components meet the requirements of this specification.
b)
To maintain the integrity of the mix, cover all stockpiled material after delivery to the jobsite. This mix will be preblended offsite and delivered ready for installation. Confirm with Growth Media provider what the estimated shrinkage
factor should be to properly calculate the amount of substrate needed after completion.
The final mix shall be tested in a certified laboratory to insure the following requirements are met.
