Did you know that, when Neil Armstrong went on the moon, he left footprints
wherever he walked? Well, his footprints were in a picture. When people saw
that one footprint in the picture, suddenly, anything seemed possible. A
photograph made anything seem like it would be accomplished someday.
People tried harder to do their work. The spacecraft started working hard on
their next space mission to make it the best one in history. Kids worked harder
in school. That one photograph made everything seem possible. So..
photographs can make history and beyond.

before? Would you like to know
who created it? A man named
Robert Goddard. He knew it
would need a lot of power so,
it could travel to space, so he
invented the rocket. This was a
liquid fueled rocket. The rocket
took off on March 16, 1926.
Mission Control!

Today I will teach you about Mission Control.
Kennedy Space Center: The Kennedy Space Center is where all the shuttles take off. The Launch
Control starts the countdown, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 LIFT OFF!
Johnson Space Center: Mission Control at Johnson Space Center takes over right after launch.
The flight Controllers look over the engine, the shuttle’s direction, and the amount of fuel. They
look for any changes in the life support systems.
Space Station: The Space Station is where astronauts live and work. The Marshall Center in
Alabama checks the science experiments in the space station. Experiments help astronauts learn
how people adapt to being in space.
Mission Control Center: Flight control help astronauts complete their missions. The mission
control is located at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

Space Pilots

In every space mission, there is a pilot. He or
she helps the commander fly the space shuttle.
If the commander is sick or injured, the pilot is
in charge of the crew. The pilot can use the
robotic arm to put satellites into orbit. The
robotic arm is a tool that allows the astronauts
to grab a satellite and move it.

Uranus

Uranus is a planet that is green and
blue. It has rings made out of black
boulders. The Earth is way smaller
than Uranus. It’s like Earth is a baby of

gravity, not like on Earth. There is way
more space on Uranus than Earth. But
not as big as Jupiter. Uranus is the

Black Holes

Black holes grow as they eat, so they are only limited in
size by the matter they eat. What do they do to you? If an
astronaut were to go in a black hole they would not feel it
at first. Later the black hole’s gravity would pull harder on
the astronaut’s feet then their head. Finally The astronaut
would be stretched into a spaghetti shape then crushed
into an invisible speck. That is what would happen if an
astronaut went into space. Did you know that black holes
have so strong gravity that nothing can escape it? Well
it's true nothing, can escape it, not even light. However
black holes only affect things in their area. So that means
nothing is in danger except the things in the area. Now
you know about black holes.
Robots in Space

Hi, my name is Joseph and I am going to teach you about robots that go into space. The Mariner is a type of
robot that flew around a planet 3 times! Also there was another robot called Stardust that reached a comet
Wild 2. This is a robot that flew by Jupiter on March 5, 1979. It was Voyager 1 who did that. One robot you
can drive, and that robot is a moon buggy. A moon buggy is a little car that you ride in the moon and while
you drive it it gives information to NASA.

Today I’m going to teach you about Mars the planet.
Mars is the 4th planet in the whole Solar System. Mars’
nickname is the ‘Red Planet’ because of it’s surface. To
the ancient Romans they named the planet ‘Mars’
because the surface is red and it reminded them about
the god of war, Mars. The things that are dangerous on
Mars are the gasses. They mostly have Carbon Dioxide in
them. Another reason is because it’s really cold. It can go
up to -80 degrees during the summer near the equator.
In the winter it will go around to -225 degrees. The last
reason I’m going to tell you why Mars is dangerous is
because of the red dust. There is also rust in the dust. If
you breath in that dust you can choke and die. Mars is
also half the size of Earth. Curiosity rover is now on
Mars to study Mars.

The Atmosphere of Uranus
Like the other gas planets, Uranus does not have a solid surface.
Uranus has a thick atmosphere. The mixture of gases forms a
layer around the planet. Uranus’s atmosphere is made up of
hydrogen and helium gases. Methane is the upper atmosphere
gives Uranus its blue-green color. Strong winds blow the clouds
around the planet at speeds of up to 650 miles per hour.

Mercury
Mercury is the nearest planet to the sun, but
it's not the hottest. Venus is the hottest.
Mercury is a big rocky planet with craters
everywhere. Craters are made from meteors
and asteroids. Mercury can be seen by earth
in the sky night. If you look up at the sky,
planets don’t always look like they're in the
same place. Planets are called planets
because they wander around in the sky.
Planet means wanderer in ancient Greek.
Jiho: ISS (International Space Station)
Hello it’s me Jiho here again and now I will talk about the ISS! The ISS is a microgravity and
space environment research laboratory where crew members can do experiments in biology,
human biology, physics, astronomy, meteorology, and other fields. The station is suited for the
testing of spacecraft systems and equipment required for missions to the Moon and Mars
(which is awesome). The ISS orbits at an altitude of between 330 and 435 km (205 and 270 mi)
by means of reboost manoeuvres using the engines of the Zvezda module or visiting
spacecraft. It completes 15.54 orbits per day! Wow!
ISS is the ninth space station to have a crew, following the Soviet and later Russian Salyut,
Almaz, and Mir stations as well as Skylab from the US. The station has been continuously
occupied for 15 years and 97 days since the arrival of Expedition 1 on 2 November 2000. This
is the longest continuous human presence in space, having surpassed the previous record of 9
years and 357 days held by Mir. The station is serviced by a variety of visiting spacecraft:
Soyuz, Progress, the Automated Transfer Vehicle, the H-II Transfer Vehicle, Dragon, and
Cygnus. It has been visited by astronauts, cosmonauts and space tourists 17 different nations!

The ISS continued!
After the US Space free Shuttle program ended in 2011, Soyuz rockets
became the only way for astronauts to get to the International Space
Station, and Dragon became the only provider of bulk cargo-return-toEarth services.
When people train to be astronauts, only a few people are chosen in 2
years! When you are in space, since there is no gravity you float around
like dead fish, like if you are swimming in water (like dead fish). The
people that come to the ISS often get sick. I hope You liked my article!

Here are some of the brightest
stars: Sirius, Canopus, Alpha,
Centauri, Arcturus, Vega, Capella,
Rigel, Achernar, and Betelgeuse. If

Jupiter!
Of the nine planets that circle around the sun, Jupiter is a giant. Jupiter is
mostly made out of gas.The planet Jupiter is 88,793 miles across. It is
bigger than any other planet in the Solar system. If Jupiter were a hollow
ball than Jupiter could fit more than 1,300 Earths inside of it. Like other
planets, Jupiter travels around the sun. In the 1970s space probes
explored Jupiter. In 1994, a comet was heading straight to Jupiter. When
the comet went close to Jupiter, it broke apart.

The first living things to be launched into space
were animals. In 1957 the Soviet Union sent the
first dog named Laika into space but sadly she
did not come back. The first chimpanzee to be
launched into space was named Ham and his
mission was a success. Enos was the second
chimpanzee to be launched to orbit our earth. An
astronaut named John Glenn was able to orbit
our earth because of what our scientists learned
from these brave animals.

In 1993, a comet called Shoemaker Levy 9 passed near Jupiter. Did you
know that comets are chunks of ice
and rock that orbit the Sun? Comet
Shoemaker - Levy 9 broke into many
pieces when it passed Jupiter. The
pieces spread out in a long line. In
1994 , the pieces fell into Jupiter’s
atmosphere one at a time. Each
piece fell in a different place.

telescopes.
That is jupiter’s
red spot.

The Moon The Moon is a gray crater covered place,
beyond our world in space. The Moon takes 27 days to
orbit the Earth. People had been on the moon. In Apollo
11, the first man to step foot on the Moon was Neil
Armstrong. Any person who steps on the Moon, their
footprints stay forever. The American Flag was placed on
top of the Moon by Neil Armstrong. The Moon has
different phases.The phases are full moon, half moon, the
new moon, semi moon, crescent moon, gibbous moon, the
waxing moon, and the waning moon.

The Earth is a Place in the Galaxy, that we live on. The Earth is a special place that we get air, water,
food, and other needs from. The Earth has special resources that some other planets do not. For
example, water. The Earth is never too hot with water! But if there was never water, than our planet
would be all shriveled, like a dry ball! The Earth has been here for a long time. The Earth is made up of
MANY gases. That Causes us to live, and breathe. This is a special home for us, and other special living
things, such as the animals. Just like us, all things on Earth need
something from Earth- that’s why Earth is specially designed

The sun is a bright star. The light and the heat reaches to all planets in the solar
system.The sun weighs 1,000 times more than the rest of the objects that are in the
solar system combined.The sun has powerful gravity because of its giant size. Its
massive gravity makes all the planets orbit the sun. If there is no gravity, the planets
will be catapulted into the deep space.
The sun has the gases hydrogen and helium. Heat and pressure turn hydrogen into
helium deep inside the sun. Some of the hydrogen turns to light and energy. The
energy goes to earth and warms the earth from the sun.
Every one second, four million tons (3.6 million metric tons) of hydrogen turns to
energy. That process has been going on for a long time, like 5 billion years. The sun
has so much hydrogen that it can make energy for 5 billion years.

Mars is the 4th planet from the sun and is the second smallest
planet in the solar system. It is also called the red planet. Mars
has two poles, a north pole and south pole and they both have
ice on them but nobody knows if it has any water under the ice.
Then, one year a space prop called the Mars Phoenix Lander
went to the surface and placed its robotic arm and found water!
Mars has the biggest canyons earth has ever seen. It’s canyons
are about 5 times or more the size of the Grand Canyon located
on Earth. Some people believe Mars has Martians. Martains are
another piece of life in our galaxy. Martians are another peice of

Martians are known to fly in a type of circle spaceship. Some people think if Martians are
real, they will attack and invade the earth one day. The robots on Mars know and see
everything on Mars. They take pictures of mysterious things. Here are some pictures

This is only the beginning for there will be a rocketship that will take astronauts to Mars.

The universe is a really big place. Scientists
thought the universe started off like gas, then
a ter billions of years later came stars and
planets, including Earth. The universe is
changing all the time. In space, between the
stars, there are huge, glowing clouds of dust
called nebulae. The nebulae is where new

galaxies that are huge groups of stars.

The sun is a star. Stars are balls of hot gases. Stars are
very different. They have different sizes, temperatures,
and different colors. You probably think that the sun is
the biggest star in the universe, but it is not. Compared
to the other stars, the sun is a medium sized star. The
sun is the closest star to Earth. The sun is about
864,000 miles (1,390,000 km) wide. More than one
million Earths could fit inside the sun. The sun is about
2,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 km.
Some people think the sun is blue, red, or orange, but it
is really yellow. The temperature of the sun's surface

Mars is one of the eight planets in our solar system. It is our “neighbor”. Mars is half the size of our Earth.
It is much colder than us. Mars is the most like us. Mars days last about 24 hour like our days. Mars has it’
s own atmosphere. It has a layer of gasses all around it. Some people don’t know but Mars has water.
The north and south pole of Mars are covered in ice caps. Since Earth and Mars are alike, scientists have
wondered could there be life on Mars? In 1877, some people thought there was proof that there are living
things on Mars. An astronomer from Italy was studying Mars and saw a series of lines. He called them
canali. That means channels in Italy. When the word was put into English it became canal. One little word,
but a big mistake. Channels are natural waterways. Canals are man made, or in this case Martian made.
People thought that Martian’s made those canals. After the word mix up, there were all kinds of stories
about space creatures. Some of the stories had little green men who rode flying saucers. Some other
stories said that they were evil demons. Those stories made some people afraid of Mars. Since the 1600,
scientists and telescopes were able to study more about the red planet. In 1964 the American space
agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) sent a spacecraft all the way to Mars. It
was called the Mariner 4..It didn’t have any people. It did have special cameras. It flew more than 300
million miles. It had flew farther than any spacecraft had ever flown. It took the first close-up pictures of
Mars.

The pictures it took were disappointing. People hoped to see signs of life on mars. Nothing grew at all on
Mars. Mars looked dull. Kinda like the moon. Craters were all over mars. Mars and Earth are similar in so
many ways that it’s almost hard to believe we haven’t found any life forms there. Mars is one of the only
two planets in the solar system to be smaller than Earth. Here are some facts about Mars.
Olympus Mons on Mars is the largest mountain in the solar system. It’s more than 25 kilometers high
(that’s three times higher than Mount Everest).The Borealis Basin makes up 40% of the planet’s surface,
taking up almost the entire northern hemisphere. Mars is covered by craters from objects like asteroids
and meteorites hitting the planet. Today, 43,000 such craters have been found. That only includes the
large ones!
