Lord of the Flies, Chapter 10 activities a/ GW (4-5students in a group) - reading pp 191 – 195 (up to “…we left early.”), divide the roles – narrator, Ralph, Piggy, Sam (and) Eric. Afterwards in the group discuss the main themes in this part of the text. (A theme is the main idea, e.g. friendship, dealing with betrayal, etc. It is not the content.) b/ PW-> WHC discussion of the answers to the following questions: 1/ How does Ralph react at the suggestion of calling an assembly? Why? Can you identify the emotion which makes Ralph laugh? 2/ How does Ralph describe Simon’s death? Why does he feel the need to do this? 3/ What is Piggy’s explanation for the ritual killing of Simon? Why is he being dishonest? How does this fit in with Piggy’s usual common sense? 4/ Samneric appear. Look at the words “they flushed and looked past him into the air”. Try to find two reasons. 4/ How is Ralph’s dream of his home town different from the previous daydreams of his? (p203) 5/ Which of the four boys (Ralph, Piggy, Sam and Eric) seem to be mentally the strongest one and why? (p203) 6/ What is the consequence of Jack’s raid at the end of the chapter? What does Jack take and what does he NOT take and why?
