Classroom News Kindergarten Fun Club!!!!! Once again in the month of March, all Kindergarten students will have a chance to participate in Kindergarten Fun Club once a month. Students will get to sign up for a fun club at school if they meet their goals. These activities could be things like: crafts, dance, movies, outdoor fun, etc). These activities are subject to change from month to month. The Kindergarten team created this program to help and encourage all Kindergarten students to follow all school rules and to be responsible for both their homework and their school work. We want all our students to be ready for 1st grade where the expectations will be much higher. Please be on the lookout for a letter about Kindergarten Fun Club and your child’s specific goals to meet in March in order to participate in the clubs. We require parent permission for the Kindergarten Fun Club, so please sign and return your letter. We are all hoping for 100% participation! Literacy Tip: Practice writing sentences using sight words, punctuation, and capitals at the beginning. Math Tip: Practice counting skills between a random set of numbers. For instance say “Count starting with 8 and going all the way to 20. “ Does your child understand where to start/stop, and do they say numbers in the correct sequence. Contact information: Piney Grove Elementary School 8801 Eaglewind Drive Charlotte, NC 28212 Phone: 980-343-6470 Fax 980-343-6523 Note: Teachers are available to conference with parents before or after school hours by appointment. Arrival and dismissal times are not an appropriate time. We need to give all students our attention during these very busy transitions. Lunch Room Reminders *Lunch menus are conveniently located on the main page of the CMS website. You may print copies as needed for your family. *Teachers are generally not in the lunch room. Assistants and lunch monitors are overseeing students during this time. *Students need to eat and clean up independently. Help them by sending in packages they can open. *Kindergarteners do not always make nutritious lunch choices while eating independently. Help limit their unhealthy choices when packing a lunch. What we’re learning Literacy: In Word Work, we will review all letters & sounds and begin learning long vowel sounds. We will continue to work on antonyms (opposite words); adding, substituting, or deleting sounds in words to create new words; and using complete sentences and expanding them with more details. In Reader's Workshop students will read informational texts. Your child will learn to know the difference between fiction and nonfiction books. Through read alouds, guided reading independent/partner reading, students will learn strategies to help make meaning of the text and specific vocabulary. Students will be challenged to have conversations with partners about the topics they are reading to increase their level of understanding. During these conversations, partners will compare and contrast more than one book about a topic. Math: In math, we will begin Unit 5. Students explore geometry using a variety of materials, including Geoblocks, pattern blocks, interlocking cubes and geoboards. They describe, sort, and compose and decompose two- and three-dimensional shapes. They think about shapes in their environment and match two-dimensional shapes to three-dimensional objects. Writing: We will be launching our unit on “How to Writing”. “How to Writing” is informational or non-fiction writing where students write down the steps to complete something. For example: how to make a cake, how to ride a bike, how to build a snowman. During this unit, we will continue to focus on spelling sight words correctly in our sentences, stretching out our words and listening for each sound, using a space stick to put a space between our words and punctuation. Character Education Winners Each month we promote a character trait at Piney Grove and choose 1 student from each class that emulates that trait. Congratulations to the following winners for February! February – Citizenship Gabriela Flores Mayoral Marissa Brown Adriana Hernandez Lilly Wang Christian Vasquez K’Mari Ervin Social Studies: In Social Studies students will locate their state on a United States map and discuss American symbols. We will also address different themes such as Dr. Seuss. Science: In Science we will study how plants are living things. They have different parts that help them get what they need (water, air, sun, nutrients from the soil). We will also discuss the different habitats they live in and how it affects them. Reading on grade level??? READING is the most important subject in school. Why? Because a child needs reading in order to master most of the other subjects. ACROSS the world, children who read the most, read the best. And that includes all social levels—rich or poor, urban or suburban. MOST of our kindergarten students are currently not reading on grade level. We MUST change that by working together to read more at school and at home. READ multiple books, magazines, newspapers, lists, cards, a cereal box, anything…EVERY DAY. Reading every day with your child and promoting a love for reading is THE most important “homework” you will ever do!
