Who we are.
Second Chance organization is a
community based organization
based in Marurui, Thome in Nairobi
It was started in 2008 with the aim
of giving adults a second chance in
education.
Vision
To give adults a chance in education with the aim
to empower them economically, socially and
politically.
Mission
To make quality adult education accessible to all
adults in every sub-county within the 47 counties
in Kenya.

We serve all adults men and
women between 18 and 72years
70% are women.
30% are men,
Facts about adult Literacy in Kenya
•  7.8 million adults in Kenya are illiterate.
•  Children given birth by illiterate mothers die before
the age of 5yrs.
•  The literacy rate in Kenya is 72.16% with a rank of
140 out of 194.
•  Women perform worse in reading and numeracy
than men, at 64.2 % and 67.9 % and 58.9 % and
61.4 % respectively.
Challenges
•  Lack of resources such as reading and writing
materials.
•  Lack of Adult friendly learning environment.
•  Inadequate funding and support from government
and well-wishers.
•  Many adults still don’t believe they can go back to
school.
How we use worldreader mobile in our programs.
•  We encourage all our students to have mobile phones that can access
internet.
•  We have provided free Wi-Fi internet to all students to enable them read
books in class and download for offline reading.
•  We use different books for different lessons.
•  We have trained all our teachers on how to use the App.
•  We have been able to relate everything that we do to the worldreader
mobile by finding relevant content in it.
Using Worldreader mobile to promote reading at home
•  Adult learners with smartphones are encouraged to read to
and with their children as one way to improve their ( adults
learners) reading skills and also support their children
become better readers and develop a passion for reading.
•  Margaret is one of our role model and volunteer teacher at
