s part of our March membership campaign, WETA TV 26 and WETA HD present a wide
variety of special programming this month that includes concert performances, lifestyle advice, travel programs and
biographical documentaries. Among these broadcasts are several of particular note. The program Ken Burns: America’s
Storyteller spotlights the friend and production partner with whom WETA has collaborated for decades. The special
celebration of Ken’s extraordinary artistry and remarkable portfolio includes a preview of the epic new Florentine Films
and WETA co-production The Vietnam War, which premieres this fall. Also intriguing in March are a celebration of the
television icon Mary Tyler Moore, who passed away in January, and a biography of author and activist Maya Angelou.
Our co-production with Prof. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Africa’s Great Civilizations, continues early in the month
— find details about the series’ slightly altered airdates below this column. We also feature the engaging BBC dramamystery series Dickensian, which brings together, in a single narrative, many characters from author Charles Dickens’
literary works; and a new presentation about the life and work of artist-naturalist John James Audubon. On WETA UK,
the stunning eight-part BBC series The Blue Planet — narrated by Sir David Attenborough — explores creatures and
habitats of the world’s oceans.
Classical WETA 90.9 FM celebrates Bach Month in March, spotlighting the composer and his works throughout
our broadcasts. Enjoy all that WETA has to offer as we welcome spring, and thank you for your support.

fter the first part of Henry Louis Gates, Jr.’s new documentary series Africa’s Great
Civilizations premieres on Monday, February 27, the series will now continue on Wednesday,

n original, ten-part BBC
drama, Dickensian, presents
a bold reinvention of Charles
Dickens’ timeless novels,
crafting a storyline in which the author’s most iconic characters live side by side in the same Victorian neighborhood. A
stellar cast, including Stephen Rea (The Honorable Woman), Pauline Collins (Quartet) and Anton Lesser (Endeavour),
brings the atmospheric backdrop of old London to life. Writer Tony Jordan (Life on Mars, Hustle), freed from the constraints
of adaptation, intertwines stories of Dickens’ iconic literary protagonists — with a twist, taking familiar characters on new
journeys. You don’t need to know Dickens’ novels to enjoy these stories; packed with romance, scandal and intrigue, they
feature a crime investigation by Inspector Bucket among the drama’s central narrative threads.

Audubon
JOHN JAMES AUDUBON
A
The WETA presentation airs Friday, March 31
at 8:30 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD
new, one-hour documentary film presented by WETA spotlights iconic 19th-century
painter and naturalist John James Audubon, who explored the American frontier in search
of “the feathered tribes” he loved and studied. A self-taught artist and ornithologist, Audubon
left a legacy of art and science that made him famous in his lifetime and endures to this day.
His portrait hangs in the White House, his statue stands over the entrance to the American
Museum of Natural History, and his name was adopted by the nation’s first conservation
organization. The program brings to life Audubon’s timeless paintings with dazzling footage
of the living birds he immortalized — and celebrates visually the natural world he described
in his writings. Interviews reveal the man, explore his art, and put his groundbreaking work
in modern perspective. Sam Elliot narrates.
Support for Audubon has come from the New York Historical Society, home of the original Audubon drawings; the Cornell Ornithology Lab; the
Audubon State Park and Museum in Henderson, Kentucky; the John James Audubon Center in Mill Grove, Pennsylvania; the Audubon State
Historical Site in St. Francisville, Louisiana; and from bird lovers throughout the country.

Mary Tyler Moore: A Celebration

Tuesday, March 7 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD
documentary chronicles the life of the influential television icon (who passed away
January 25), spotlighting her acting career and featuring interviews with Moore and an
array of her colleagues, friends and admirers, including Oprah Winfrey, Dick Van Dyke,
Carl Reiner, Betty White, Valerie Harper, Ed Asner, Cloris Leachman, Gavin MacLeod
and John Amos. Moore catapulted to fame on The Dick Van Dyke Show from 1961-1966,
and her acting skill and popularity landed her a starring role as Mary Richards, the single,
career-oriented TV news producer on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which debuted on September 19, 1970. The show,
which influenced a generation of women to become more independent and to pursue successful and fulfilling careers,
ran for seven years, won 29 Emmy Awards from 67 nominations and generated three successful spin-off series. After the
show ended, Moore starred on Broadway and received an Academy Award nomination for her role in the film Ordinary

celebration of filmmaker and longtime WETA production partner Ken Burns
spotlights his four-decade career creating some of the most acclaimed historical
documentaries ever made. Actor Tom Hanks hosts the special tribute program, which
features interviews with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.; Doris Kearns Goodwin; George Lucas;
Yo-Yo Ma; Wynton Marsalis; Meryl Streep; Sam Waterston and others. An extended
interview with Burns himself offers a behind-the-scenes look at the making of his films
and provides fascinating insights into his thought process, philosophy and creative methods. Perhaps more than anyone
else, Burns has elevated documentary filmmaking to an art form and made American history come alive. For almost
40 years, through his films he has carried on a deep and probing conversation with Americans about themselves and
their country, its past and its future. Ken Burns: America’s Storyteller, which airs on March 12 as well, also provides an
exclusive look at The Vietnam War — a new 10-part, 18-hour documentary film series directed by Burns and
Lynn Novick and co-produced with WETA — which premieres on PBS stations nationwide this fall.
Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise:
American Masters
merican Masters explores the life of author/activist Dr. Maya Angelou, featuring
exclusive interviews with Angelou herself, Oprah Winfrey, musical artist Common, Bill
and Hillary Clinton, family members and others. Referred to as “a redwood tree, with
deep roots in American culture,” Angelou (1928-2014) led a prolific life. As a singer,
dancer, activist, poet and writer, she inspired generations with lyrical modern AfricanAmerican thought that pushed boundaries. Best known for her autobiography I Know
Why the Caged Bird Sings, she gave people the freedom to think about their history in a
way they never had before. For the program, filmmakers Bob Hercules and Rita Coburn
Whack had unprecedented access to Angelou before her death and trace her journey.

presents a reinvention of Charles Dickens’ timeless novels — featuring romance, scandal and intrigue — with
the author’s most iconic characters living side by side in
the same neighborhood in Victorian London as Inspector
Bucket investigates the murder of Ebenezer Scrooge’s
partner Jacob Marley. The stellar cast includes Stephen
Rea, Pauline Collins, Caroline Quentin, Peter Firth and
Anton Lesser. Creator and co-writer of the series is Tony
Jordan (Life on Mars and Hustle). Part 1. It’s Christmas
Eve and as the snow falls over Victorian London, the
body of wealthy brewer, Mr. Havisham, is driven to
his final resting place. His daughter, Amelia, and son,
Arthur, will soon learn of their inheritance. Meanwhile,
gang-master Fagin has arranged for street girl Nancy
to visit Jacob Marley tonight. As Christmas Day dawns
the Cratchits enjoy a thrifty but joyous day. The Barbarys

Frances knows of their financial ruin and is jealous of

Bucket puts Fagin in a difficult position. While Honoria
and Captain James enjoy a carefree day out together,
Frances Barbary is setting out to dash their hopes of
marriage. Repeats Fri 3/31, 4pm
10:00 DICKENSIAN — Part 3 of 10. It’s the day of Marley’s
funeral and Scrooge and Bob Cratchit watch the hearse
take Marley to a pauper’s grave. Bucket continues his
investigations and questions Nancy, who reveals a lead.
At the Havisham household Amelia is nervous about the
scrutiny to come from the brewery shareholders. Arthur
reluctantly shows up for the party too, but is appalled to
find Compeyson present. Frances Barbary is delighted
to run into old acquaintance Sir Leicester Dedlock, a
rich, elderly baronet. And at the Cratchit house all is
activity. Martha’s wedding is tomorrow and there’s a
little party to get ready. R

he children’s series Curious George is designed to inspire kids
to explore science, math and engineering in the world around
them in a fun and entertaining way. Based on the best-selling
“Curious George” books by Margret and H.A. Rey, each episode
of the Emmy Award-winning series follows the adventures of the
curious young monkey and The Man in the Yellow Hat — and
includes two animated stories followed by short live-action pieces
showing real kids who are investigating the ideas that George
introduces in his stories. The series encourages inquiry and
curiosity, promotes hands-on exploration and shows parents and
caregivers how to support children’s science and math-related
play. This month, in addition to regular episodes, the hour-long
special Curious George Swings into Spring airs March 20 and 24.
In the program, featuring spring fever, spring cleaning, a canoe
ride, a hot air balloon journey and more, George and his friends
get children ready to explore the outdoors and experience all the
wonders of the season.

WETA UK March Highlights
The Blue Planet
he BBC Natural History Unit’s epic documentary film about the world’s oceans airs in eight
parts on WETA UK, narrated by wildlife filmmaker extraordinaire Sir David Attenborough.
The dazzling series, which took five years to create, was the first production to explore the total
environment of the oceans and their communities, revealing species, behaviors and habitats never
before seen. Winner of two BAFTAs and nominated for five Emmy Awards, The Blue Planet
journeys the globe to present a definitive exploration of the marine world — chronicling the
denizens and habitats of the open ocean and the deep, spotlighting coastlines and coral reefs,
sea mammals, tidal and climatic influences and more as a complete biological system.

ETA UK features a funny and tender BBC drama that stars Lee Ingleby (Inspector
George Gently) as George Mottershead, an ex-serviceman struggling to come to terms with
the effects of the Great War. Mottershead finds a monkey locked up in a quarantine cage
and comes up with an idea that becomes a life-long mission: building Britain’s first cage-free
zoo. The charming six-part series Our Zoo, from the director of The Bletchley Circle, is based
on the true story of the Mottershead family which, despite staunch opposition and great
personal sacrifice, founded the Chester Zoo in the 1930s. The series follows the family as it
tries to get George’s idea off the ground. Liz White, Anne Reid and Peter Wright co-star.

T
his season, the National Symphony Orchestra is
presenting “A Salute to Slava,” a series of concerts
dedicated to Mstislav Rostropovich’s favorite composers,
culminating with a tour to Moscow and St. Petersburg
with Christoph Eschenbach from March 29 to 31.
Celebrated for both his towering musical talents and
his human rights advocacy, Rostropovich was music
director of the National Symphony Orchestra from 1977
to 1994. During his tenure, he took the NSO on several
major international tours. Two of these trips stand out for
their musical and diplomatic importance. The triumphant
“Return to Russia” tour in 1990 marked Rostropovich’s
first visit home after 16 years in exile. Three years later,
he and the NSO again visited Russia for an historic Red
Square performance.
On March 1, Classical WETA will present our own
“Salute to Slava” featuring music from two commercial
recordings by Rostropovich and the NSO. From the
1991 “Return to Russia” CD, we will hear Tchaikovsky’s
Symphony No.6, the Pathétique, and The Death of
Tybalt from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. Also on the
program will be the Shostakovich Symphony No.8 from a
recording produced the same year at the Kennedy Center.
I hope you will join us for our NSO Showcase “Salute
to Slava” on Wednesday evening, March 1 at 9 p.m. on
Classical WETA 90.9 FM — it’s the perfect way to wish
the orchestra bon voyage before they embark on their
2017 Russian tour.
VivaLaVoce on vivalavoce.org
s we celebrate Classical WETA’s 10th
anniversary this year, we’re delighted to be focusing
on local music-making even more than usual.
Last month on Choral Showcase, we featured the
inaugural concert by the Choral Arts Chamber
Singers of Finnish music: Under the Midnight Sun.
On March 12, we highlight their recent CD (on
Sono Luminus) of church music by Charles Wesley.
Charles Wesley
is known to you
even if you think
otherwise. For one,
he wrote Hark!
The Herald Angels
Sing and more
than 6,000 other
hymns! He was
an 18th-century
English leader
in the Methodist
Charles Wesley
movement, and,
since he was educated at Christ Church, Oxford,
I’ve structured the March 12 program around
Oxford. It includes the Wesley, plus two works by
Ralph Vaughan Williams performed by the Christ
Church Cathedral Choir conducted by Stephen
Darlington. The Mass in G minor is dedicated
to RVW’s contemporary Gustav Holst, but it’s in
the style of early English mass settings — think
William Byrd and Thomas Tallis. It luxuriates
in the composer’s much-loved rich polyphonic
writing; the piece calls for double choir (using eight
distinct vocal parts) plus soloists. That richness
goes even further in Flos Campi, also airing on
the March 12 Oxford program. It’s for viola solo,
wordless choir, and orchestra.
In other programs this month, we feature a
recording on March 5 by Washington-based
Cathedra — conducted by Michael McCarthy —
of Baltimore-area composer Stephen Caracciolo’s
Ubi caritas. On March 19, we spotlight The Earth
and I, a CD of new American music performed
by Washington Master Chorale. I’ve scheduled
the CD’s title work by D.C.-area composer Lori
Laitman (setting poems by Emily Dickinson) and
The Eye Begins to See by Donald McCullough.

here’s no denying that performances featuring massively large

orchestras often receive top of page promotion. Yet the opportunity to
hear familiar orchestral works played by a smaller ensemble offers us a
chance to re-tune our ears and actively rediscover music we thought we
knew well. As part of our ongoing focus on local artists in celebration of
Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s 10th anniversary year, we spotlight the New
Orchestra of Washington (NOW) formed in 2012 by a group of D.C.area professional musicians with a particular emphasis on performing
symphonic works re-arranged for smaller ensembles. You can hear their
artistry Monday night, March 13 at 9 p.m., as Front Row Washington
presents NOW’s “Smaller is Better” concert, featuring Mozart’s overture
to The Marriage of Figaro, Johannes Brahms’ lyrical, powerful and
inspiring Symphony No. 2 in D major, and Edvard Grieg’s much-loved
A minor piano concerto with guest pianist Mayumi Sakamoto. The
performance, recorded last October at the Bender JCC of Greater
Washington, is led by NOW’s Artistic Director and Co-Founder
Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez, described by The Washington Post as a
conductor “with the incisive clarity of someone born to the idiom.”
