The Oil and Gas industry includes facilities where hazardous materials are produced
and/or stored and also involves the transportation of corrosives, flammable materials,
radioactive materials and toxins. The losses (caused by lightning strikes) to this industry
can be far-reaching and the damages can be catastrophic.
Storage tanks, whether petroleum tanks or chemical storage tanks are known to be
vulnerable to lightning strikes due to vapor. When lightning strikes an oil storage tank,
explosion and fire are most likely to occur. Plume of smoke that result from the fire will
potentially cause health issues to people who breathe it. This may result in costly lawsuits
and in worst cases, loss of human life. Apart from suffering negative publicity, the incident
can also disrupt business operations, cause loss of content in the tank (and loss of potential
profits), loss of supplier's/buyer's confidence and loss of government contracts (or even
increased governmental scrutiny).
