Penguins, whales seals, albatrosses, other seabirds and a whole range of invertebrates you may have not heard of such as krill which form the basis of the Antarctic food web. Antarctica is the coldest continent on earth, and has a climate of extremes The continent is snow- and ice-covered, with freezing temperatures all year round. So-called "Catarina winds" can cause violent snowstorms that can last for days, and sometimes even weeks, making it very dangerous to stay .The polar summer with daytime temperatures between -20°C and –5°C is the only time to travel to Antarctica, because the conditions are too bad during the winter months, with extreme cold temperatures, violent storms, continuous darkness and ice-bound seas. Be prepared to extreme weather conditions at any time. Do people live in Antarctica? The people who travel to or live in Antarctica fall into two main groups, those who live and work on scientific research stations or bases, and tourists. No-one lives in Antarctica indefinitely in the way that they do in the rest of the world. It has no commercial industries, no towns or cities, no permanent residents.
