MANAGER’S
MESSAGE
WOW! That’s what I told the staff when I returned from my first tour of the new library building.
On paper, it looks big. Up close, it looks HUGE compared to what we now have. County
officials and the library’s architect
are very pleased with the progress
that the construction company is
making. The room dividers have
been installed, so it was possible to
see how the different areas flow into
each other. It will be such an improvement over the
current facility that I know everyone who sees it will
say the same thing I did—WOW!
The county library system has just completed a
system upgrade which will give each library its own T1 line for Internet access. That should greatly improve
service to the public computers as well as to the circulation network. Since Citrus Ridge averages almost
12,000 check-outs per month and serves no less than
100 people per day on the public computers, this upgrade is a welcome improvement.
As you have read elsewhere in the newsletter,
the library is now offering downloadable audiobooks.
In addition, we have just purchased, and will soon be
circulating, a new product called Playaways. Playaways are the simplest way to listen to an audio book
on the go. They come with the book already on them.
Simply insert a AAA battery, plug in earphones and
enjoy. No cassettes or CDs. No downloads. There’s
nothing left to do but listen. There will be a variety of
titles from which to choose, ranging from adult fiction
and non-fiction to young adult and children’s titles.

CINCO de MAYO
CELEBRATES VICTORY
The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The 5th Of
May, commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in
1862.
It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated
in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and
throughout the state of Puebla, with some limited
recognition in other parts of Mexico, and especially
in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population.
It is not, as many people think, Mexico’s Independence Day, which is actually September 16.

MEMORIAL DAY HONORS
AMERICA’S WAR DEAD
SINCE 1868
Memorial Day was originally known as
Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to
honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating
their graves.
It was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868
by General John Logan, national commander of the
Grand Army of the Republic and first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers.
During the first celebration of Decoration
Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more
than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried
in the cemetery.
By the late 1800s, many communities across
the country had begun to celebrate Memorial Day
and, after World War I, observances also began to
honor those who had died in all of America's wars.
In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national
holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May.
In 1999, there were bills introduced in the
United States Senate and House of Representatives
to restore the traditional day of observance back to
May 30th. The bills were referred to the Committee
on the Judiciary and the Committee on Government
Reform and there have been no further developments.
