A FEW WORDS ABOUT
THE SQUARE DANCE CENTER
AND CAMPGROUND
Ray and Afton Granger created the Dance Center in 1978
on the banks of Lolo Creek. They spent more than 30 years in
the square and round dance activity in the Missoula area – Ray
as a caller and round dance instructor, assisted by his wife,
Afton. Afton was in the square dance apparel business for over
35 years. Together they designed and have built a facility with
an almost perfect arrangement for the dancers.
Ray passed away in April 1998 and Afton joined him in May
2014. Both are greatly missed by their family and square dance
friends. Bobbie & Barry continue the legacy and hospitality they
began at this beautiful campground and dance facility.
The Dance Center was constructed in the spring of 1978,
and first opened in June, for the whole purpose of square
dancing and round dancing. It has a cushioned maple floor,
air conditioning, excellent sound and room for 30 squares.
Adjoining the dance floor is a tabled rest area where coffee,
tea, pop and other refreshments are available during the dance
breaks. A well-stocked square dance apparel shop also adjoins
the dance floor.
Other activities include horseshoes, and an 18 hole
whiffleball golf course that winds through the trees and is a
challenge to even the experienced golfer and a great deal of
recreation to the novice golfer. There are afternoon acoustic
music jams and a 1 mile scenic perimeter nature walkway
through the trees and along Lolo Creek that provides many with
a part of their daily exercise. Fishing in Lolo Creek requires a
State fishing license and is open to our guests.
The Dance Center is located on twenty-seven acres of
pine tree-covered land along Lolo Creek, 3300 feet above sea
level. This is in western Montana near the Idaho border in the
midst of the beautiful Bitterroot Mountains. A six hour drive will
take you to Yellowstone Park and a four hour drive will take you
to Glacier Park. National and State forest lands of all kinds are
within a short drive of the Dance Center. Some of the rivers
nearby are the Bitterroot, the Clark Fork and the Blackfoot, which
all join near Missoula. Numerous smaller streams, including Lolo
Creek, provide excellent trout fishing. Summer activities include
boating, fishing, hiking, sightseeing, swimming and square &
round dancing.
The town of Missoula, home of the University of Montana,
is eleven miles away and provides many excellent motels,
restaurants, shopping areas and theaters. There are five public
golf courses located in the Missoula area.
CAMP AND DANCE ALONG
THE LEWIS & CLARK TRAIL
The summer program has Phase 4+ round dancing on
Monday evenings, Phase 3 & 4 rounds on Tuesday evenings,
and square dancing every Thursday through Sunday. Nationally
known square dance callers have been scheduled for most
Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Plus level square dance
lessons/workshops are on Thursday evenings, and plus level
square dancing is on Friday and Saturday evenings. Mainstream
level square dancing is on Sunday evenings. Week long
sessions for mainstream and plus level square dancing, as
defined by CALLERLAB, have been scheduled. Special round
dance weekends have been scheduled in June. We hope that
you will stop by for a visit when you pass our way.
