FUNDED THROUGH MICHIGAN COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT GRANT ,EUPRP&DC AND SAULT TRIBE OF CHIPPEWA INDIANS
PROJECT UPDATE
The kick off phase of our Water Trails project has been very
successful! In December we had the opportunity to hold kickoff meetings in Newberry, Bay Mills, Barbeau, Pickford, DeTour
Village and Sault Ste. Marie. We were so impressed with the
attendance at the meetings and community support for this
project!
These meetings gave us the opportunity to share information
on what Water Trails are, scope of the Water Trails Project and
how we need you - our local communities and community
members to be involved and create our own unique trail!
Now we are moving into the next phase of the project; Identifying Access Points. We encourage everyone to contact EUP
RP&DC to share your insights of your local community so we
can include this in the initial draft document. Along with identifying sites, our team (EUPRP&DC & Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of
Chippewa Indians) will be gathering information from local
recreation and master plans.
If you were unable to attend the kick-off meetings more information can be found at http://eup-planning.org/water-trailplanning
If you would like to be
more involved with
the Project please
contact us and attend our
Project Team meetings!
Meetings are held the third
Monday of the month at 2 PM
in the Ojibwe Learning Center
and Library located at 523
Ashmun Street, Sault, MI.

Community Benefits
Water Trail related benefits are
numerous and important. Economic, health, environmental and
recreational benefits are the main
perks of water trails, drawing in
people; both locals and tourists.
The purpose of a water trail is to
provide a comprehensive guide to
the lakeshore, with details identifying safe pit stops and amenities,
specifically for non-motorized water transportation users. This includes paddlers of canoes or kayaks, and any other forms of nonmotorized water transportation.
Upcoming Events: Quiet Water
Symposium 3/7/2015, Lansing,
Michigan http://

EUPRP&DC staff will have a
booth at the QWS—if you have
any brochures or flyers on local
water trails or non-motorized
trails you would like us to include
in our hand-out materials contact
[email protected] by
March 4, 2015.
Community Assets
Local community assets involve adding boat launches, campgrounds or
other local amenities, such as public restrooms or picnic areas, to the water trail. Local outfitters, rental locations and other local recreational
stores will be added to the trail. Economically, hotels, restaurants and
other businesses will benefit from the income of visitors attracted to the
beauty of our surrounding water. Communities in the Eastern Upper Peninsula are small, but each has a unique individuality and charm that is enhanced by the surrounding wilderness. The development of the water
trail enables locals and visitors the opportunity to experience these
charming towns and scenic landscapes from the water. Already established land trails combined with the new Water Trail will allow for more
recreational adventures.

Concept Site Plans
Once our access sites are identified, inventoried, assessed and mapped
“what is next?“ you may ask. It is our goal to provide the property owners with conceptual site plans and sample language that can be used in
your community recreation plan to prepare for implementation.

Future meetings/interviews will
be scheduled with each community and property owner during
the project to gather this information and develop your concept site plans.
Thank you for participating and taking time out of your busy schedules to assist us with this project. Future meetings and volunteer opportunities will be announced in upcoming newsletters. Please keep an eye on online announcements as well.
