Teaching Strategies
This activity works best when students
work in pairs. Before the activity, review
how to read a topographical map with students. Students may have difficulty interpreting contour lines. Be sure they
understand that the distance between contour lines decreases as the terrain gets
steeper. It may also be helpful to identify
natural landmarks and areas on the map
that exhibit steep or gradual slopes.
As a warm-up activity, you may wish to
lead the class through the following set of
directions.
1. From the chapel, at the north end of
town, follow Canario Creek 1.7 km upstream to Canario Lake.
2. Walk north along the western shore of
Canario Lake to a campground.
40
HOLT SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
3. At the camp, follow Canario Creek upstream from the lake until you are due
west of Puma Peak, a mountain in the
chain to the east.
4. Turn east, cross Canario Creek, and
climb 300 m in elevation. Then, keeping constant altitude, head southwest
to Mount Burro.
5. From Mount Burro, look for the campground on the shallow slope to the east
and walk down to it.
6. Head south from the campground to
Cantando Creek.
7. Follow Cantando Creek downstream to
a stream bed entering the creek from a
canyon to the southeast (Lobo Creek).
8. Follow Lobo Creek up the canyon to an
elevation 360 m above Cantando, and
follow the contour to the south and
east until you are directly between two
peaks, Mount Lobo and Mount Solo.
That’s where the treasure is!
Students may have trouble orienting
themselves while attempting to incorporate multiple directions in a single step.
Make sure students know which direction
they are facing on the map before proceeding to the next step. Some students
may find it helpful to stand up and physically turn themselves according to the instructions. They can also draw arrows on
the map to show the “facing” direction.
Evaluation Strategies
For help evaluating this lab, see the
Rubric for Performance Assessment
in the Assessment Checklists & Rubrics. This
rubric is also available in the One-Stop
Planner
CD-ROM. Also,
a peer evaluation
checklist has
been provided

Students develop map-reading skills by following directions, reading a map scale,
and using a topographic map to solve a
problem. Then they designate their own

STUDENT WORKSHEET
Looking for Buried Treasure
You have been asked to hide a treasure in the Perdido Mountains. First, you will
need to find a good place to hide the treasure. Then you will have the pleasure
of generating a fiendishly challenging set of directions to the treasure site.
Finally, you will trade directions with a classmate, and the two of you will find
each other’s buried treasure.

and their meanings
Write a set of directions for a topographic map based on elevation, distance, and landmarks.
Instructions
1. Review the Important Map Information below and the
Useful Terms to the left.
2. Pick a site to hide the treasure on the map on page 42.
3. Develop a set of map directions to the treasure that includes
the following:
•
•
•
•
10 to 15 steps
three changes in elevation
compass directions
a creek or river that must be followed upstream or downstream
• a contour line around a mountain
• a specified walking distance
• landmarks, such as lakes and campsites
4. Trade map directions with a classmate, and follow the directions to your classmate’s treasure.
5. Complete the Peer Evaluation of Map Directions found on
page 43.
Important Map Information
1. Carefully review the map on page 42, and familiarize yourself with the scale and
the geographic features represented in the legend.
2. The numbers and letters along the edges of the map are used to locate features on
the map. For example, there is a chapel located in B10.
3. Note that the contour interval for the map is 60 m. For example, the contour line
next to the 2,700 m contour line in L17–L18 represents an elevation of 2,760 m.
4. The contour interval is the same regardless of the distance between contour lines.
A steep slope is represented by contour lines that are close together. Wider-spaced
contour lines represent a gradual slope.
5. Rivers and streams always flow from high to low elevation. Erosion causes stream
and river beds to be lower than their banks, leading to V-shaped contour lines that
point upstream.
