Read the passage. Then answer the questions.
For any right triangle, the sum of the squares of its legs equals the square
of its hypotenuse: a2 + b2 = c2. This is the Pythagorean Theorem. It is credited to
the ancient Greek philosopher, astronomer, and religious thinker Pythagoras,
and is what he is best remembered for to this day.
Pythagoras was born about 2,600 years ago on the island of Samos. He
was a lifelong teacher who began by tutoring just a few students by making and
coloring shapes in sand. For Pythagoras, proof mattered above all else.
Two angles were not equal simply because they looked to be the same size.
Their congruence had to be proven.
Pythagoras was unappreciated during his lifetime. His practices seemed
strange and threatening. For instance, he taught both men and women at a
time when women in Greece were forbidden to attend any kind of gathering.
Once, an angry mob burned down his meeting places and he had to flee for
his life. But his work influenced later thinkers and his ideas spread. Today, all
geometry students around the world work with concepts Pythagoras discovered.
1. Why did the methods Pythagoras used seem threatening?

2. Some think that the theorem is not the work of Pythagoras but of one of his
successors. Why might there be uncertainty? ____________________________________
