Embedded in all HP ProLiant Gen9 servers, Intelligent Provisioning is a single-server deployment tool
that installs the operating system, supplying most of drivers required for that operating system in a
wizard-style format.
Intelligent Provisioning replaces and improves upon the SmartStart CDs and Smart Update Firmware
DVD that were used with previous generation HP ProLiant servers.
These release notes provide information about this release of Intelligent Provisioning, including support
information, enhancements, and known issues and their potential workarounds.
User documentation for Intelligent Provisioning is available on the Intelligent Provisioning Information
Library page (http://www.hp.com/go/intelligentprovisioning/docs).

Guide.
•
Intelligent Provisioning does not support connecting to an FTP server through a proxy.
Installation instructions
HP ProLiant Gen9 servers are pre-loaded with a basic set of firmware and operating system components
that are installed with Intelligent Provisioning. After the server is running, use the Intelligent Provisioning
Firmware Update utility to update any components that have been outdated since the server was
manufactured.
NOTE: When using the Firmware Update utility, you should verify that the Installed Version of the
component (displayed on the left side of the Firmware Update screen) is newer than the version listed
on the right side of the screen. If the installed version is newer, clear the check box for the component.
Updating instructions are documented in the HP Intelligent Provisioning User Guide. The latest Intelligent
Provisioning ISO can be downloaded from the HP Intelligent Provisioning website (http://www.hp.com/
go/intelligentprovisioning).
Known issues and suggested actions
HP strongly recommends that the resolutions listed in this document be applied accordingly to instructions
in the resolution documents. Failure to do so might result in issues that can cause disruption to the
operation and functionality of HP ProLiant servers. This list is updated as new issues are discovered
and resolved.

Operational issues
•
Issue: Entering your e-mail address as your HP Passport User ID might not work during Direct
Connect registration even though your e-mail address was the HP Passport User ID you used
during the HP Passport registration process.
Suggested action: If you changed your HP Support Center (HPSC) User ID, your e-mail address
will no longer work. Enter your User ID and not your e-mail address.
•
Issue: The Target Controller selection field in the Hardware Settings page of installation might
have no effect when using UEFI or Legacy BIOS Boot Mode because of the advanced boot methods
added to the new platform.
Suggested action: If the targeted controller is not the correct one in multicontroller systems, disable
the unwanted board to force installation to the correct device.
•
Issue: Cannot update firmware from Intelligent Provisioning.
Suggested action: Use SPP to update the firmware. Use Intelligent Provisioning media connected
to the server to update Intelligent Provisioning.
•
Issue: When changing the iLO StaticIPv4 or DHCP setting in the Intelligent Provisioning Preferences,
the dedicated iLO port setting is forced and the iLO network setting is not changed under the
system using shared iLO port. As a result, iLO cannot be accessed remotely.
Suggested action: To change the iLO StaticIPv4 or DHCP network setting, use the iLO GUI or the
iLO configuration menu under UEFI setup.
•
Issue: After installing VSA, you cannot ping the VSA.
Suggested action: This may be caused by the network configuration. Ensure the network connections
are configured properly and that the virtual switch the VSA is connected to is using a live uplink
adapter.
•
Issue: VSA installation failed.
Suggested action: If you are using a proxy server, this might be caused by an incorrect proxy
setting. Make sure the proxy setting includes the appropriate protocol (ftp, http, or https). If the
protocol is not included, the installation of VSA may fail.
•
Issue: When installing VSA, the Sign me up... option on the contact information page does not
remain selected when navigating forward and backward through the screens.
Suggested action: Reselect the Sign me up... option if necessary.
•
Issue: When attempting to register for HP Remote Support using a proxy server, the registration
fails with the error message Invalid Proxy Credentials.
Suggested action: Do not use a proxy server when registering for HP Remote Support.
•
Issue: Cannot access Configure and Install on Intelligent Provisioning home page from systems
supporting SATA RAID operating in Legacy BIOS Boot Mode.
Suggested action: To access HP SSA in Legacy BIOS Boot Mode, switch the SATA Controller (in
RBSU) to SATA AHCI mode from Dynamic Smart Array mode. Dynamic Smart Array (B140i)
works only in UEFI Boot Mode.
Known issues and suggested actions
5
•
Issue: The system is unable to boot and complete the OS setup. The screen displays a message
that no available boot device can be found and will reboot.
Suggested action: This occurs if an unsupported option card is used as a boot controller on ProLiant
Gen9 servers in UEFI Boot Mode. Replace the option card with a supported device that supports
UEFI Boot Mode.
•
Issue: The Configure and Install option on the Intelligent Provisioning home page is disabled if
the HP Dynamic Smart Array B140i RAID Controller is enabled in a multi-controller configuration
while operating in UEFI BIOS Boot Mode. In this situation, the following message is displayed:
The SATA RAID Controller must be disabled for normal system operation
in this configuration. Installation has been disabled.
Suggested action: To enable the Configure and Install option, disable the HP Dynamic Smart Array
B140i RAID Controller in UEFI BIOS Boot Mode. This is done by selecting System Options→SATA
Controller Options from the UEFI System Utilities. For more information, see the HP UEFI System
Utilities User Guide for HP ProLiant Gen9 Servers.
User interface issues
•
Issue: Changes to the System Boot Mode (UEFI or Legacy) are not implemented immediately.
Suggested action: This is normal operation. Changes to the System Boot Mode (UEFI or Legacy)
are implemented during the OS installation process or in the next POST.
•
Issue: English language content is sometimes included in the non-English-localized (such as Italian
or Spanish) OS Review page.
Suggested action: None.
Windows-specific issues
•
Issue: When performing a Windows manual install in UEFI Boot Mode, the install does not boot
automatically from the DVD.
Suggested action: When prompted, press any key to boot from the DVD.
•
Issue: When installing Windows on multiple controller systems, the install might not follow the
requested controller boot order as seen in Intelligent Provisioning and the UEFI configuration.
Suggested action: Disconnect or disable the non-boot controller to force the installation to host all
OS files on the correct drive.
•
Issue: When installing Windows, a 0 MB Partition error is displayed on the OS information page.
Suggested action: None. Ignore this error and continue with the installation.
Linux-specific issues
•
Issue: When performing a Linux installation with Intelligent Provisioning that has two different
controller cards, the desired card may not be selected as boot.
Suggested action: This causes a boot-order mismatch problem in Legacy BIOS mode. Before
starting Intelligent Provisioning installation process, disable all the controllers but the boot device
temporarily.
•
Issue: When installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.0, the installation fails if the NIC cable is
disconnected.
Suggested action: Keep the cable connected to the NIC at all times during the installation. If the
network is not available, install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.0 from OS install media, not through
Intelligent Provisioning.
6
Known issues and suggested actions
•
Issue: Attempting to install Linux with an SD card in Legacy BIOS Mode fails.
Suggested action: Installing Linux from an SD card in Legacy BIOS Mode is not supported. Use
an alternative to the SD card.
•
Issue: Cannot install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.0 using the Manual install option on Legacy BIOS
Mode.
Suggested action: Use the Recommended install option instead of Manual.
•
Issue: While performing a Recommended install of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, you must manually
select an Ethernet option at the beginning of the installation to proceed. The install process should
continue without user intervention.
Suggested action: Manually select the Ethernet options when the install process pauses for user
input.
•
Issue: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Manual install fails with boot loader error in Legacy BIOS
Mode.
Suggested action: Perform the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Manual installation in UEFI mode.
VMware-specific issues
•
Issue: VMware does not always follow HP controller ordering.
Suggested action: When installing on multiple controller systems, the non-boot controller might
need to be removed during the initial set up to prevent OS files from being copied to it.
•
Issue: VMware installed on HDD goes for continuous reboot if USB is connected to SUT.
Suggested action: Remove the USB once the files are copied to HDD and goes for a reboot before
the installation begins. The OS will come up successfully.
•
Issue: Cannot use an HP SD card as a target for deploying VMware ESXi.
Suggested action: HP Intelligent Provisioning does not support installing a VMware ESXi operating
system to an SD or MicroSD card.
