Wading Pools - Ipswich City Council

fact sheet
IPSWICH CITY COUNCIL
Wading Pools
Inflatable wading pools are popular purchases in the hotter months, but tough pool safety
laws introduced by the State Government must be considered before making such purchases….
or you could be wasting hundreds, even thousands, of dollars!
Remember!!
An inflatable wading pool is classified as a
‘regulated swimming pool’ if:
• It can be filled with water to a depth of
300mm or more;
• It holds more than 2,000 litres of water;
• It has an installed pool filter
If it meets any one of these criteria, you will be
required to comply with a number of strict State
regulations including installation of a pool fence,
obtaining building approval for both the pool AND
fence before installation, and building certification
after construction/installation. In addition, you
must register your wading pool with the Pool
Safety Council (see bottom right for weblink).
Failure to meet these requirements can result
in an ‘on the spot’ fine of $770, or up to $2,200
if an Enforcement Notice has been issued by a
council officer.
Tenants of rental properties need to obtain
approval from landlords or rental agencies prior
to installing any pool which meets ANY of the
above criteria.
Non-Compliant Wading Pool
Water depth over 300mm with no fencing
Let’s Not Forget….
Drowning is the leading cause of death in
Queensland for children aged one to four years.
Families should ensure their children are supervised
in the water at all times. From a young age, children
need to learn how to swim, through lessons and
parental guidance.
More information on required fencing standards is
available at the Department of Housing and Public
Works’ website: www.hpw.qld.gov.au/construction/
