El Dorado County Public Health Parklet FAQS
 WHAT IS A PARKLET? A parklet is a small public area that transforms a former parking space
into a public recreation area. Parklets are a temporary place for the public to rest, recreate and
enjoy the city.
 WHAT IS THE COMPETITION? To design a small park (parklet, with a “Healthy Living” Theme
that is temporary (relatively easy to move) and will fit in a 7X14 foot space.
 ARE THERE ANY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PARKLET? Yes. For a full list of requirements, please
refer to the application package found on www.welldorado.org
 WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? Any El Dorado County High School student. You can apply as an
individual or as a team.
 CAN I SUBMIT MORE THAN ONE DESIGN? Yes. There is no limit to the number of applications
you may submit but we do require one application per design.
 WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION? Friday January 13th.
 HOW DO I SUBMIT AN APPLICATION? By mail or in person to: 931 Spring Street Placerville, CA

 WHAT DO I GET IF I WIN? We will unveil the winner at a design celebration in January. You will
be given an opportunity to work with an architect/contractor to take your design from concept
to reality. The parklet will be installed on Main Street in the City of Placerville in May 2017 via a
ribbon cutting ceremony.
 WHAT IS THE BUDGET? $5,000 for materials and installation.
 DO I GET TO KEEP ANY MONEY IF I GO UNDER BUDGET? No. All of the money needs to go
directly to the project.
 WHERE WILL THE PARKLET BE INSTALLED? On Main Street in the City of Placerville.
 WHY IS IT TEMPORARY? Because this is a new concept for the City of Placerville. It is a
demonstration project intended to garner support to install something permanent in the future.
 WHO IS SPONSORING THIS PROJECT? El Dorado County Public Health.
 WHAT DOES A PARKLET HAVE TO DO WITH PUBLIC HEALTH? Parklets have been shown to
improve physical health through accessibility because our parklet requires an activity
component. Parklets encourage active transportation, increase foot traffic and socially reenergize an area. Parklets have also been shown to improve mental health by providing more
places for social interaction.
 HOW WILL THE PARKLET BENEFIT LOCAL BUSINESSES? Parklets have been shown to increase
sales for nearby businesses which also increases sales tax revenue for the city.
 ISNT PARKING ALREADY A PROBLEM IN PLACERVILLE? The parklet will be located near the
underground parking structure where there is always open space for parking and it is free for
the first two hours.
 WHAT BEHAVIOR IS NOT ALLOWED IN A PARKLET? You cannot smoke, consume alcoholic
beverages or participate in other illegal activities, just like a sidewalk.
