Theme: “Literacy Changes Our World!”
Monday, January 23: Celebrate reading kick-off on the morning newsCommunicate upcoming activities and read a book.
9:00 – 9:20 “Read Across the Campus” (20 minutes)
Tuesday, January 24:
“Book Buddy Day” –
Selected students in grades 3-5 will read to an assigned K-2
class
Wednesday, Januay 25:
“Classroom Trivia”—
A question will be given and the winning class will be
announced.
(Question: K-2 will be about a book and 3-5 will be about
an author)
Thursday, January 26:
“Book Talks”: Select one student to share their favorite
book on the morning news.
Friday, January 27:
“Reading Celebration” –
Students who have an 85% AR reading average or higher
for the 3rd nine weeks will be invited. These students will
wear special Reading Reward Pins and will receive a
Popcorn treat.

about leaders & leadership, our theme for this week will be: “Literacy and
Leaders Change Our World.” Leaders in our school or community will be guest
readers on our WDTS morning news show. We will also have a literacy themed
Poster Contest; classes will have a Read-a-Thon on a day of their choosing; and
we will have Buddy Reading occur during the week.

*Members of administration will read their favorite book on the school news throughout the week.
*Each class will participate in a door decorating contest to showcase their favorite book. (The judging
will take place Friday, 1/27).
*We will have a “Bagels & Books” event on Thursday, January 26th at. Parents will be invited to come to
our media center to learn about reading strategies that can be used a home to help their children
become more successful readers while they enjoy bagels and other breakfast items.

Nonfiction Challenge-Students will read non-fiction books, successfully
pass the A.R. quiz and earn a bookmark and charms.
Get Caught Reading-Schoolwide bulletin board of pictures of
students, celebrities and school staff who get caught reading.
Sunshine State Readers-Students who read the Sunshine State
Young Readers’ Award and Sunshine State Young Readers’ Jr. Award
books will get to put their name on a sun and have it posted on the
bulletin board in the media center.
Literacy Fun Facts-Various fun facts and trivia relating to literacy will
be broadcasted on the WGES morning news show each day.
“My Favorite Book” Bulletin Board-Students and school staff may
have their picture with their favorite book along with a written
recommendation to read it and why featured on a school wide bulletin
board.
Accelerated Reader (A.R.) Prizes and Recognition-Students who
earn specific point goals will win prizes and be able to appear on the
WGES morning news.
Guest Readers-Guest readers (parents and community leaders) will
read to individual classes.
Reader Dogs-Dog owners and their canine companions from the
R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs®) will read with
individual students.
Reading Special Books in Special Area-Special area teachers begin
each class by reading aloud a picture book.
Buddy Reading-Primary students will be paired up with intermediate
students to read books together.
Classroom Activities-Individual classrooms will participate in
various activities to celebrate literacy.

Paper Bag Book Reports Service Project 2nd Grade
Second Grade students will complete book reports on an AR book they have read this school year.
This will be a service project that allows our students to share the love and joy of reading with our
community. We are partnering with Publix for this amazing opportunity. Publix is donating paper
bags for students to be creative and share their book reports on, then the bags will be used when
bagging groceries at our local Publix.
Sidewalk Quotes of Inspiration 5th Grade
Fifth Grade will create Sidewalk Quotes of Inspiration. This would consist of students working in
small groups to identify their favorite quote from a book they have read and write the reason the
quote resonates with them.

5 Course Meal for Healthy Readers 4th Grade
Fourth Grade students will read books from a menu including selections from different food choices.
Fruits/Veggies (Poetry), Meat (Biography/History), Milk (Sports/Hobbies), Fish (Science/Nature), and
Dessert (Fiction).
Fairy Tale Day 1st Grade
First Grade students will compare and contrast 2 fairy tales. Classes can be very creative with how
the fairy tales are introduced and discussed.
Maggie the Beagle with a Broken tail and the Baby Sea Turtles Presentation 3rd Grade
3rd Grade Caferteria 8:45 – 9:30; Tutoring Students will stay from 9:30 – 10:00 in classroom
across from Parramore’s room
Third Grade students will participate in a presentation about Maggie the Beagle and her adventures
with sea turtles. This presentation is sponsored by the Tallahassee Rotary Club.
Dalmation Day (101 Reasons to Read)
Kindergarten students will sing songs, read stories, and/or poems about dogs for 101 minutes.
Flashlight Friday ALL GRADES
ALL grades are asked to bring in a small flashlight. Students will take out their flashlights to read in the
dark.
