WINTER ASSIGNMENT OF ENGLISH
GRAMMAR
CLASS –IX going to X
SECTION-A(READING)
1. Read the passage given below:
8 marks
The Perfect Dog
1. In the summer of 1967, when I was ten years old, my father caved into my persistent pleas and took me
to get my own dog. Together we drove in the family station wagon far into the Michigan countryside to a
farm run by a rough-hewn woman and her ancient mother. The farm produced just one commodity –
dogs. Dogs of every imaginable size and
shape and age and temperament. They had only two things in common: each was a mongrel of unknown
and distinct ancestry, and each was free to a good home.
2. I quickly decided the older dogs were somebody else’s charity case. I immediately raced to the puppy
cage. ‘‘You want to pick one that’s not timid,’’ my father coached. ‘‘Try rattling the cage and see which
ones aren’t afraid.’’
3 .I grabbed the chain-link gate and yanked on it with a loud clang. The dozen or so puppies reeled
backward, collapsing on top of one another in a squiggling heap of fur. Just one remained. He was gold
with a white blaze on his chest, and he charged at the gate, yapping
fearlessly. He jumped up and excitedly licked my fingers through the fencing. It was love at first sight.
4. I brought him home in a cardboard box and named him Shaun. He was one of those dogs that gives
dogs a good name. He effortlessly mastered every command I taught him and was naturally well-behaved.
I could drop a crust on the floor and he would not touch it until I gave the okay.
5. Relatives would visit for the weekend and returned home determined to buy a dog of their own, so
impressed were they with Shaun – or ‘‘Saint Shaun’’, as I came to call him. Born with the curse of an
uncertain lineage, he was one of the tens of thousands of unwanted dogs in America. Yet by some stroke
of almost providential good fortune, he became wanted. He came into my life and I into his – and in the
process, he gave me the childhood every kid deserves.
6. The love affair lasted fourteen years, and by the time he died I was no longer the little boy who had
brought him home on that summer day. I was a man, out of college and working across the state in my
first real job. Saint Shaun had stayed behind when I moved on. It was where he belonged. My parents, by
then retired, called to break the news to me.
My mother would later tell me, ‘‘in fifty years of marriage, I’ve only seen your father cry twice. The first
time was when we lost Mary Ann’’ – my sister, who was still-born. ‘‘The second time was the day Shaun
died.’’
7 .Saint Shaun of my childhood. He was a perfect dog. At least that’s how I will always remember him. It
was Shaun who set the standard by which I would judge all other dogs to come.

Q2. Read the passage given below and answer the questions: 8 marks
1. We readily admit the importance of character building in education. But we take the word “Character”
lightly and treat the concept casually. So, we pay scant attention to “character” in recruiting teachers, who
are to serve as character builders. Character building seems to be just about the only task that we expect
to be accomplished by those whose suitability for it is presumed to be immaterial. This indifference to
character bedevils education at all levels.
2. No one familiar with the practice of education will doubt if there is a synergy between character and
excellence in education. This is true at all levels. From the lowest to the very highest. “Most people say
that it is the intellect which makes a great scientist,” Albert Einstein said, “they are wrong. It is character.”
All earnest students have been young men and women of character. Our hearts swell with pride as we
favour the prospect of India
becoming a global economic giant.
3. Sure, it is not beyond our reach for we have the required resources. But if we are to reach there, we
need to mind our national character. We covet ,say , Olympic laurels but we could not persuade our best
tennis players to play together for the country at the London Olympics 2012. Between our promise and
our performance, opens up a yawning gulf that swallows our future.
4. The well spring of character is self worth. If you value the person that you are, you will take care of
yourself. As a rule, impurity ruins worth. The most exquisitely, flavored and enchantingly fragrant cup of
tea loses its worth ,the moment a fly falls in to it. What it loses is not taste, aroma or color but it purity.
“The real ornament of a Man”, said Gandhiji ‘is his character, his purity”.
5. Purity expresses itself as positivity to what is good and worthwhile. Impurity breeds a contrary
disposition. It makes a person turn against himself, against his own best interests. Purity- rooted
positivity is a student’s greatest asset. Positivity enables her to enter into the full scope of every
educational facility and opportunity. Purity sustains concentration and
fortifies patience. The impure are restless. Academic or intellectual impurity implies a state of being
pulled in opposite directions. Patience is the power to stay focused overtime.
6. Peer- pressure is, almost always, in the direction of compromising their purity. It is robbing you of your
‘immortal jewel ‘the integrity and felicity of your inner being. No agenda for character building can,
hence, side step the issue of peer pressure.
7. Purity – based patience embodies the dynamism of being positive towards oneself. Men and women of
character are found, therefore, hospitable to discipline, hard work, austerity and struggle. The shallow, on
the other hand, resent and rebel against all of these.
(A )Complete the sentences

Q3. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: (12 marks)
Men and their activities have affected nature in a very significant manner.
1. Melting ice and warming waters have raised average sea level worldwide by more than an inch since
1995 new data from space satellites and robotic submarines have revealed
2. That s twice as fast as the rate the oceans rose during the previous 50 years ocean experts said If the
current rate continues or accelerates as they say is likely the world s seas will rise at least a foot by the
end of this century causing widespread flooding and erosion of islands and low-lying coastal areas.
3. “Even a small change will matter to a whole lot of coastal people. If 15 percent of the Greenland ice
sheet were to melt, much of South Florida would be underwater,” said Richard Alley, a geoscientist. The
rise in the sea level was caused by a recent speed-up in the melting of glaciers and ice sheets, especially in
Greenland and Antarctica, due to global warming, another serious man-made problem threatening the
world with severe consequences.
4. Humans have significantly affected the flow of half of the world’s major rivers by building dams
according to the first detailed global assessment of the activity s impact.
5. Another study shows that dam building among other human actions has altered the amount of
sediment that rivers carry to the coast with implications for marine ecology fisheries and coastal erosion.
6. The first study led by Christer Nilsson of the Landscape Ecology Group at Umea University Sweden
assessed the extent to which dams affect 292 large river systems. These rivers drain 54 percent of the
world’s land area and carry 60 percent of the planet’s river-water.
7. Previous surveys had only looked at rivers in the northern hemisphere. Nilsson and colleagues added
to this collection new data from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Australasia.
8. The team found that river flow has been strongly affected in four of the world’s ten largest river
systems and moderately affected in the other six.
9. Fragmenting river systems and controlling their flow with dams has well-known potential impacts on
the ecology of rivers. Among other effects, dams disrupt the migration of animals up- and downstream, an
impact that has been linked to the extinction of species of freshwater fish.
10. While areas upstream of dams are flooded to create reservoirs, wetlands downstream can dry out and
the fertility of flood plain soil can decline.
11. Geoscientists insist that the severe ecological effects of building dams need to be accounted for in
global planning for sustainable river management. They note that large dams are planned or under
construction in 46 large river systems, 40 of which are in developing countries which need to take
precautionary steps.
12. Almost half of these new dams will be on just four rivers: China’s Chang Jiang (also known as the
Jangtze River), where 49 new dams are planned, the Rio de Ia Plata in Latin America (29 new dams), the
Shatt Al Arab in the Middle East (26 new dams), and the Ganges-Brahmaputra in South Asia (25 new
dams).
1.1 On the basis of your reading of the passage answer the following questions: (8 marks)
a. Which two factors have caused the rise in the average sea level? (1)
b. How is this rise being monitored? (1)
c. What will happen if this is not checked? (1)
d. How is man responsible for this rise in the sea level? (1)
e. How has the construction of dams affected rivers? (1)
f. Which two negative effects of dams are mentioned in the text? (2)
g. Which of the dams being planned can affect India? (1)

4. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
We live in an age of great hurry and great speed. Men have lost their inward resources. They
merely reflect, like a set of mirrors, opinions which they get from outside. When they get a little
leisure, they turn to material diversions from outside rather than to inward resources. In other
words, this internal vacuum is responsible for mental and nervous troubles. The cure for this is
not so much treatment by medicine and surgery but a recovery of faith in the ultimate goodness,
truth and the decency of things. If we are able to recover that faith, if we are able to live in this
world with our consciousness centred in the ultimacy of the spirit, many of the problems to
which we are subject today may be overcome. Our people were regarded as aspiring after
metaphysical insight and religious bliss, but we seem to forget that it never occurred to them to
equate eternal life with either the surrender of the mind or the sacrifice of the body. When the
Upanishad writer was asked to define what is meant by spiritual life or life eternal, he gave the
answer that it consists of the play of the vital organism, the satisfaction of the mind, the
abundance of tranquility of the spirit. Body, mind and spirit must be integrated and they must
lead to a harmonious developed life. If we get that, we have life eternal.
A.1. Complete the following statements:
(i) We live in an age of great ____________.
(ii) The author suggests that the cure for this is ____________.
(iii) „Life eternal‟ means _______________.
(iv) Our internal emptiness is responsible for ________________.
A.2. Complete the summary using one word in each blank :
In this age of great hurry and speed men have lost (i) ____________resources. This is responsible for
their mental and (ii) ____________troubles. If we recover our faith in the goodness of life we can
overcome many of our (iii) ____________. Our people tried to seek (iv) ____________ insight and
religious bliss. For spiritual life, there should be a proper integration of body, mind and spirit.
5.Read the given passage:
Born in 1775 in Steventon, Rectory, Hampshire, Jane Austen belonged to an upper middle class
family and enjoyed all comforts. She and her sister Cassandra had their first lessons from their
mother. Schooling in Oxford, South Hampton and at Abbey School. Jane at the age of nine and
Cassandra at the age of 11 were back home. Both enjoyed reading poetry and great works of
Shakespeare. At the age of 12, Jane Austen looked better than a tomboy. Initially she started
writing short humorous stories. Her first full length novel titled „ Elinor and Marianne‟ started in
her late teens. At the age of 22, she wrote „ First Impressions‟ and later „Pride and Prejudice‟.
Jane Austen has portrayed in her novel things like niceties of decorum, petty jealousies, vanity
and affection. She has dealt with the superficialities of life. „Pride and Prejudice‟ is the most
interesting novel and the most popular because of its interesting plot, a rich comedy, supreme
theme, the sparkling life of characters, a freshness of the scenery. A year or two later, she
completed “Susan‟ which was retitled “Northanger Abbey‟. Family circumstances made her leave
Steventon and go to Bath. But the memories of her widowed Sister, her friends and relatives, the
family rectory and the countryside haunted her and she could not be happy at Bath. Like
Casandra, Jane also had a love affair with a doctor but it ended in a tragedy. After her father’s
death in 1805, she got support of her brother Edward and began a comfortable life with a
renewed interest. At the age of 41 she died and her two novels „Persuasion‟ and „Northanger
Abbey‟ were published after her death.
A.1. Based on reading of the passage, choose the correct option to answer the questions
that follow:
(i) How do you know that Jane was born with the spark for literary writing? (a) she wrote short
humorous stories.
(b) she used to read poetry and great works of Shakespeare at an early age.
(c) „Pride and Prejudice‟ is the most interesting novel.
(ii) Why could Jane not be happy at Bath?
(a) she missed everything about her life at the countryside.
(b) two of her books were published after her death.
(c) after her father’s death, her brother was supporting her.
A.2. Complete the following:
(i) After Austen’s father died, her brother Edward _____________.
(ii) Jane had to face two tragedies when she was at Bath.
Those were (a) ______________ (b) ______________

6. Read the following article based on a report by health experts in England.
Most teenage girls in England are smokers. They believe cigarettes help keep them slim, make
them look grown-up, and control stress. And even though they know the risks to their health,
they would still rather smoke. The habit is on the increase among teenage girls while it is falling
in all other groups of the population. Now almost one in three girls of school-leaving age are
smokers. Health experts are puzzled as to why the anti-tobacco message is not reaching them. Dr
Anne Charlton says: „ We do not really know why they are taking up smoking when everyone is
giving up. They seem to be more influenced by advertisements, which are increasingly aimed at
women.‟ Teenage girls are more likely to start smoking if one of their parents is a smoker. They
probably have a best friend who smokes, and parents who do not disapprove of their habit of
smoking. Fifty percent of girls who leave school to start a career in hairdressing are smokers. In
nursing, the figure is 44 per cent and around 34 per cent in clerical jobs. DrCharltong says, “The
percentage is less among those who go to university. The smokers are usually the ones who do
not do well at school and don’t even want to.” They mistakenly believe it helps to keep their
weight down, although they have no weight problem in the first place. This message of needing to
be thinner than thin has come over very strongly and they would rather risk their health than
risk putting on weight. “One of the most effective methods of getting girls to stop smoking is to
point out how much they smell”, says Dr. Charlton.
A.1. Choose the best answer:
(i) Teenage girls in England smoke
(a) even if they know smoking is unhealthy
(b) because smoking helps them lose weight
(c) because they are leaving school
(ii) Health experts
(a) really have no idea why girls smoke.
(b) do not understand why girls give up smoking
(c) do not understand the anti-tobacco message

7.Read the given passage very carefully.
Balanced Personality
Often students who are very fond of reading books are labelled by their comrades as bookworms.
Those disparagements generally come from the mouths of students who consider themselves as
being‟ gamesters‟. Boys who shine in athletics or in the playing of some game- particularly
cricket, consider that the games field is a better or nobler arena for their activities and the
expenditure of their energies than the classroom or the reading desk. The idea is born out of an
inferiority complex inherent in the „games- minded‟ students who actually envy their fellow who
shine academically. Academic honors have a glamour which is unique. It is not to be denied that
the playing of games is a worthy activity; it is worthy in the sense that the team spirit can be
encouraged in the individual only if he has learnt to participate in the playing of games. It is also
true that the player does much for society and for his country on the playing field. It is true that
the feeling of co-operation can be cultivated in a person only through group activity. But studies
should not be sacrificed in order that students devote their time only to the playing of games. It is
my observation that those boys who become obsessed with the playing, particularly of cricket,
begin to ignore their studies and then their academic ability suffers, as it must. Let each type of
activity have its own place in our daily round and then only will the balanced division of interests
produce the individual with a proper perspective of things. Then will we have the student who is
both academically good and who can hold his own on the games field. That is the personality that
we want our educational system to produce.
A.1. Complete the following:
(i) According to the author the main goal of education is _______________ (ii) Gamesters‟ tend to call
academically sound students bookworms because ______________.
(iii) The two qualities that we can acquire through playing games are

8.Read the passage carefully:
English is the most widely read language in the world. One in every seven human beings can
speak it. English has the largest vocabulary – perhaps as many as two million words. English is
also a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant. Neither pine nor apple in pineapple and no
ham in hamburger. Sweetmeats are candy, while sweetbreads, which are not sweet, are meat.
Quicksand works slowly, boxing rings are square, and a guinea pig is neither a pig nor from
Guinea. And why do writers write but fingers do not fing, grocers do not groce and hammers do
not ham? If vegetarians eat vegetables, what do humanitarians eat? Perhaps all English speakers
should be sent to an asylum for the verbally insane. In which language do people recite at a play
and play at a recital? Have noses that run and feet that smell? How do “a wiseman” and “a wise
guy‟ differ in meaning? Why are „overlook‟ and „oversee‟ antonyms? Why are quite a lot and
quite a few alike? Don’t you marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can
burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which your alarm clock
goes off by going on! English was not invented by computers. It has the creativity of the human
race (which is not a race at all). That is why, when stars are out they are visible, but when lights
are out they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch I start it, but when I wind up this
essay I end it.

Of all the meals that glad my day
My morning one’s the best;
Purveyed me on a silver tray,
Immaculately dressed.
I rouse me when the dawn is bright;
I,leap into the sea,
Returning with a rare delight
To honey, toast and tea.
My appetite was razor edged
When I was in my prime;
To eggs and bacon I was pledged…
Alas! the March of time;
For now a genial old gent
With journal on my knee,
I sip and take with vast content
My honey, toast and tea.
So set me up for my delight
The harvest of the bee;
Brown, cristoast with butter bright,
Ceylon- two cups or three.
Let others lunch or dinner praise,

As I regard with grateful gaze
Just honey, toast and tea.
