Connie Brenton is the driving force behind one of the most
innovative, disruptive and celebrated legal teams in the
world, saving NetApp millions of dollars and elevating
their reputation to the pinnacle of the industry. Hear
why they started with the goal of creating a legal group
as a business and learn how by crafting and carefully
implementing a technology strategy, leveraging data and
metrics they achieved amazing results.

Demystifying the Hottest Trend in
Technology: Machine Learning for
Lawyers
Machine learning is the hottest topic in Silicon Valley
and beyond. From spam detection to recommendation
engines of Netflix and Amazon to Google’s self-driving
cars, it seems that machine learning can do it all.
But what can it do for the legal profession? Should
legal departments and law firms adopt this almost
mythical “thing” they call machine learning? The
answer, not surprisingly, is “it depends.” But before we
discuss specific use cases where machine learning
can benefit the legal profession, we must demystify
it and understand what it is and what it is not. Join
this session to learn how one of the most innovative
organisations in the world has employed machine
learning and how it may apply to your legal work.
Julian Tsisin is a Program Manager for Legal Technology
at Google. As part of his role he is responsible for
developing, implementing and supporting various
systems that improve efficiencies within Google’s Legal
Department. Prior to Google, Julian worked in a similar
role at Disney and as a software engineer for a large
international law firm.
How to Provide Clients With Tangible
Insight Into Their Matters
Through its full-time, client-facing innovation team,
hear how Davis Wright Tremaine (DWT) have helped
customers such as Microsoft drive greater efficiencies
in their in-house legal function. Through data collection
and analysis DWT have built a contract support system
which gives their client real-time analysis.
DWT developed dashboards and other reporting
tools so that customers can look at the data about
these contracts at any time and DWT could provide
actionable intelligence about their contracts and how
to make the contracting process even more efficient.
Jay leads the firm’s innovation initiative, DWT De Novo.
His focus is on deploying people, processes and
technologies to work more efficiently, and in ways that
create greater value for clients. Having served as in-house
counsel for many years and as a business transactions
lawyer in the technology field, Jay looks for creative
solutions to clients’ business and legal challenges.

What Got Us Here Won’t
Get Us There: Innovation
Is Not Negotiable
Innovation for Telstra’s in-house legal team has enabled it to become
one of the preeminent in-house operations. Hear how deploying design
thinking and driving agile innovation have played key roles in the
innovation agenda.
Mick will share key tips and tricks to navigate bureaucracy and overcome
blockers of change. This session will explore breakthroughs in knowledge
management, and Telstra’s success in reducing low value work and huge
benefits derived from the smarter use of alternate legal providers.
Mick is Telstra’s General Counsel of Finance & Strategy and his team
supports the Telstra CFO and Company Secretary’s Office. Mick has
an extensive M&A background, with 20 years’ experience working on
transactions in Australia, US, Europe and Asia. Mick is passionate about
innovation in the legal industry and the opportunities for lawyers to
continually add more value to their clients.
Transforming Contracting
Into a Competitive
Advantage Using Norms,
Metrics and (Big) Data
Most large organisations engage in volume transactions - repetitive,
routine, low to modest dollar value, risk complexity and strategic value.
Many rely on tools, processes and legal or contracting methodologies
which are sub-optimal from a cost and efficiency perspective. Hear
about HP’s four-year project which has deployed software automation
and support tools and agile support models informed by data analytics,
all underpinned by meaningful metrics.
Steven is committed to legal services innovation and has either led or
participated in several global department initiatives. These range from the
adoption of Legal Project Management in service delivery, the deployment
of a cloud-based contract management, workflow and analytics tools, to
the design of a captive legal services solution adopting a “follow the sun”
service model for commodity contracting support. He manages Hewlett
Packard Enterprise’s Office of the General Counsel in Australia and
New Zealand, providing end-to-end legal services across the region.

Berys Amor has worked in the legal sector for more than 25 years,
starting in finance administration before moving into information
technology. As Director of Technology at Corrs Chambers Westgarth,
Berys’ current role involves collaborating with key business
stakeholders to understand the business objectives and factors of
success in the industry, and developing and implementing the IS

Leadership Matters
In times of crisis, leaders are defined both by their actions and by their
ability to make decisions without deliberation - to act with confidence but
without recklessness. One of the most positive things about working in
disasters is that true leaders are quickly identified. Without the constraints
of an organisation chart or an imposed management structure, authentic
leaders will rise. This keynote presentation takes audiences through the
importance of leaving an indelible impression, making decisions without
deliberation and focusing on results and not excuses.
Peter Baines OAM, a former forensics officer with the NSW State Police
Force developed his unique leadership style by leading international
identification and recovery teams into Indonesia and Thailand following
acts of terrorism and the 2004 South East Asian Tsunami. He would go on
to work in the counter terrorism area of Interpol, spent time with the United
Nations Office of Drug and Crime and also worked in Saudi Arabia and
Japan after natural disasters in those countries.

to revolutionalise planning and workflow, tools
to radically improve efficiency and productivity
and develop a real way to “work smarter” rather

Too many law firms are failing to see the
bigger picture when it comes to Legal Project
Management. For many lawyers, LPM is nothing
more than taking work that they have been doing
for years and complicating it with task lists,
spreadsheets and gantt charts. Hear how LPM can
look to cope with increased competition from low
cost providers, the growing influence of in-house
legal teams and increasing demands from clients
for greater transparency and accountability with
respect to fees.
Being innovative in business has long delivered
success and failure. For the fortunate, visionary,
or those who happen to be in the right place at
the right time, success has already been achieved.
What can the rest of us do…? Leadership is
looking to in-house teams to deliver success
through innovation. Where do we start and
what do we need to be aware of? Hear how
innovation should be defined, question whether
it always needs to be disruptive and identify
and assess opportunities.

work stream to produce a repeatable design
pattern targeted at streamlining “paper piles” and
the untracked progress of that paper. A reduction
in manual processes has increased staff visibility
and created an audit trail of completion rates. The
standard interface now aids completion while
improving awareness of the overall progress.
The rapid change of technology and its potential
impact on our industry is discussed incessantly.
With the change comes incredible complexity,
so how do we gain clarity when we are all
struggling to juggle our increasing workloads,
while assessing the latest technological or product
enhancements? Hear how NetApp have led the
way as a Beta-tester for legal technology and
achieved big ROIs from small improvements
including e-signatures and workflow technology.
What can you do tomorrow to start making

JULIAN TSISIN

Google (USA)
Want to develop a roadmap for a data-driven legal
department? Hear real-life examples from Google
on how they built a business based on data-driven
decisions: The ultimate goal for most organisations in
both legal and non-legal fields. Before data could be
used for anything, it needed to be collected, organised
and made available at the right time to the right
people. Julian will share his war story - building the
foundation for a data-driven organisation was not
a glamorous undertaking but it had to be done and
done right.
MICHELE GOSSMEYER

The pace of technology change continues to
increase the demand for flexibility and agility.

a culture that not only supports but drives new and

environment of client service motivated by a

and how G+T seeks to leverage best of breed

Moving to a paperless office environment can
have huge benefits for business - reducing
environmental footprint, the cost of resources
and the volume of storage required. But within
the legal sector, where courts and regulators have
relied so heavily on hard copies and decades of
process are entrenched, this has been viewed
by many as a white elephant. Hear how Hall &
