Introduction
The GIFT Box is a unique project initially launched by STOP THE TRAFFIK and
the United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN.GIFT) at the
London 2012 Olympics. GIFT Boxes have proven to be successful in large-scale
awareness raising, introducing people to the issue of human trafficking and
inspiring them to take further action.
GIFT Boxes are not simply about giving and gathering information….each event
should empower its community to respond!
The GIFT Box has been hosted in over 30 locations throughout the UK, U.S.A,
Slovakia, Haiti, Brazil and Canada. Thousands of volunteers have been trained to
host the box and have become advocates for ending human trafficking, engaging
thousands of community members.
What exactly is a GIFT Box?
Each GIFT Box is a walk-in piece of public art that can be assembled and
disassembled at various venues. It symbolises the way in which traffickers
entice their victims with false promises. The outside of the box offers the “gift” of
a brighter new life; bright and beguiling, people can’t help but be intrigued. Once
inside they realise the deception. They are confronted with a three dimensional,
3
thought-provoking and interactive experience, which introduces the grim reality
that victims of human trafficking are forced into.
In order to build your own GIFT Box you will need to consider the following
aspects:
1. Construction – you will need to engage a construction partner to build
the necessary parts of your GIFT Box
2. GIFT Box Content Design – you will need to engage a design partner to
ensure that all of the content you want to include on the inside and the
outside panels of the box fit and work from an aesthetic perspective when
they are printed on the panels
3. GIFT Box Extras – to get the most out of the GIFT Box event, we
recommend designing and printing leaflets to hand out, as well as
promoting the event on social media
4. GIFT Box Volunteers – you will need various volunteers to assemble and
then disassemble the box at your chosen location, and stand with the Box
throughout the day in order to talk to, engage with, and inform the
community about the issue of human trafficking
5. Storage Coordinator – when the GIFT Box is not in use, the GIFT Box
parts must be stored in a secure and appropriate location that prevents
wear and tear from external elements (wind / rain / etc.)
4
When should you use a GIFT Box?
The GIFT Box can be used in a number of ways:

As a feature of a larger event

As a focal point to build events around

To engage the general public in locations which have a high footfall

To initiate a local response to human trafficking

To raise awareness with a particular group e.g. students, frontline
professionals
Benefits of hosting a GIFT Box

The boxes are a proven vehicle for successfully generating conversation
and in turn awareness about human trafficking

Volunteers at the box are in a unique position to gather community
knowledge on the issue

The boxes allow us to build relationships with individuals and inspire
them to take action in their communities and join our global campaigns

The boxes are essential in educating and widening perspectives about
human trafficking and the deceptive element of trafficking

The boxes can be lent out to other organisations for other events; this
encourages a broad, transparent and knowledge-sharing network of
multiple agencies working to combat human trafficking

STOP THE TRAFFIK and UN.GIFT
STOP THE TRAFFIK
STOP THE TRAFFIK exists to end the buying and selling of people. We are a
global movement of activists from all sectors of society around the world who
passionately give our time and energy and unite to build resilient communities
and disrupt and prevent human trafficking. We are a campaigning organization
that seeks to build a traffik-free world.
Resilience to human trafficking is not built passively but instead requires
focused energy and a holistic approach. STOP THE TRAFFIK’s strategy is
fundamentally built on three critical areas of activity and GIFT Box is a tool
which is fit for all three areas:
Community Transformation
We shine a light on the crime of human trafficking. We equip people to
understand what trafficking is, how it affects
them and what they can do about it. We
empower individuals to take action to
prevent trafficking in their communities. We
raise awareness to ensure that vulnerable
people are protected against the abusive
and deceptive behaviour of traffickers.
Global campaigning
We inform consumers about how trafficking impacts the supply chains of
businesses world-wide. We equip and empower consumers to change their
buying habits and campaign for change. We advocate for business to take action
to prevent trafficking.
Gathering and Sharing Knowledge
We gather and analyse information from individuals and stakeholders all over
the world on how and where trafficking is taking place. We share this knowledge
generously in order to disrupt the traffickers’ trade.

United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Trafficking (UN.GIFT)
By encouraging and facilitating cooperation and coordination, the United Nations
Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN.GIFT) aims to create synergies among
the anti-trafficking activities of UN agencies, international organisations and
other stakeholders to develop the most efficient and cost-effective tools and
good practices.
UN.GIFT works to ensure that everybody takes responsibility for this fight.

The GIFT Box Process: Working With STOP THE TRAFFIK
Relationship
STOP THE TRAFFIK will work closely with you to establish the GIFT Box project
in your country. It is vital to work collaboratively throughout the building
process, so the short term and long term delivery of this project maximises the
potential to raise awareness, gather community information and inspire activism
to prevent human trafficking on a local, national & global level.
Our support will include advice on construction plans and process, design and
case studies and suggested volunteer training. We will also help with the
collation of community information; documentation and reports; promotion
amongst STOP THE TRAFFIK’s global network.
STOP THE TRAFFIK and you as GIFT Box partner will both sign an Operating
Agreement and a Liability Release Agreement adapted to your country/state, so
there is clarity about responsibilities.
STOP THE TRAFFIK Charter
We will send you the STOP THE TRAFFIK Charter for you to review. We would
hope that you strive to uphold the directives outlined in this document while
representing STOP THE TRAFFIK at the GIFT Box.
Risk Assessment
We will provide a Risk Assessment Template for you to consider. Please note
that this will be a general risk assessment for the GIFT Box, and a more detailed
risk assessment might be required for your specific event / venue.
Health and Safety at the GIFT Box event is the responsibility of your
organisation, and not STOP THE TRAFFIK.
STOP THE TRAFFIK Branding Guidelines
We will send you the STOP THE TRAFFIK Branding Guidelines for you to review.
It is extremely important that you read these Guidelines, especially if you plan to
create any marketing or informative material for use before, during or after the
event. Any marketing will need sign off from STOP THE TRAFFIK before
publication.
8
Legal Documentation
The intellectual property rights regarding the GIFT Box lie with STOP THE
TRAFFIK. STOP THE TRAFFIK will only license your organisation to create a
GIFT Box once you have signed the necessary legal documentation, and paid the
Licence Fee Contribution to STOP THE TRAFFIK. After you have built your GIFT
Box you will have the option to hire your Box out to other host organisations for
a small fee, thus recouping some of your initial costs.
The legal documentation includes i) an Operating Agreement and ii) a Liability
Release Agreement.
STOP THE TRAFFIK will seek to appoint a lawyer operating in your country’s
jurisdiction in order to facilitate a translated version of the documents, if
required.
Projected Timeline
STOP THE TRAFFIK strongly suggests that you factor in at least a six month
timeline for the GIFT Box construction and ultimate event. We have given an
indication below of the typical timings of the process:

If you are unable to source these materials in your country, please notify STOP
THE TRAFFIK and we can discuss what alternatives might be suitable to use.
Design Content
The design of the box can be translated and contextualised to make it relevant to
your audience. You will need to find a company or designer to create your design
based on the design framework that we can provide you with. STOP THE
TRAFFIK will provide support during the design process and will approve and
sign off the design.
The information displayed on the GIFT Box should illustrate a clear distinction
between the exterior and the interior design - this is one of the foundations of
the GIFT Box idea; an enticing colourful outside versus a truthful dark inside.
Inside the GIFT Box you will find:

Case studies with photos (of models) or approved images



Information regarding The STOP APP; what it does, how to use it and
where you can download it from
Outside the GIFT Box you will find:

Wrapping paper design with text boxes shaped as gift tags

Wording in the text boxes; the promises made by traffickers to trafficking
victims

Logos (adhering to the standards as outlined above)
13
Extras
Leaflets
You are invited to create a bespoke GIFT Box leaflet to be handed out by
volunteers at the box. STOP THE TRAFFIK will advise you in this process
(including content and design) and will sign off the final leaflet design, ensuring
that the leaflet is in line with the global project and strategy of STOP THE
TRAFFIK.
The leaflet should give visitors to the GIFT Box:

Information about human trafficking

What to do to help prevent it locally (your organisation)

What to do to help prevent it globally (STOP THE TRAFFIK and The STOP
APP)

Display organisation logos and details (including STOP THE TRAFFIK,
UN.GIFT and your organisation)

Provide people with the opportunity to sign up for more information
about human trafficking from STOP THE TRAFFIK and your organisation
(please ensure this is in line with your local/national data collection
requirements)

To display the logos of all sub-organisations involved
Website and Social Media
STOP THE TRAFFIK will provide you with a section on our website. If you decide
to promote the project on your organisation’s website or any other website as
well, please add a paragraph on STT, the background of the GIFT Box and a link
to the GIFT Box webpage.
Showing that your country GIFT Box is part of a global GIFT Box project that has
been running across the world for three years will strengthen your
local/national GIFT Box project. STOP THE TRAFFIK will provide a link to your
website on their website as well.

Volunteers and Team Leaders
Volunteers play a key role in the GIFT Box. The
conversations they will have with people will make the
difference. That is why it is essential that all volunteers are
carefully selected and receive appropriate training.
We will provide a number of documents to ensure that you
are best positioned to select volunteers, train volunteers,
and gather vital community data whilst hosting the GIFT
Box.
Volunteer Selection Criteria
We will provide a document giving best practice tips for selecting volunteers for
your event.
Volunteer Training Presentation
We will provide you with training materials to use with your final group of
volunteers, and can advise you on how to make this document bespoke to best
match your context and objectives.
Information Pack – Team Leaders
We will provide a document giving advice and specific tasks for Team Leaders.
They will be responsible for ensuring that the GIFT Box procedures are adhered
to on the day.
Information Pack - Volunteers
We will provide a document to be given to the chosen volunteers, which will
include a volunteer form that must be signed, as well as a youth volunteer form
giving parental consent, if necessary.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU!
