Resident & Family Satisfaction Survey Results
Thank you to the more than 300 people across
our community who took the time to complete
the annual survey. As part of a national quality
initiative and database, we understand that the
questionnaire may not be 100% pertinent to all
our housing residents but know we find great
value in the data and comments collected. Presbyterian Homes set a goal for the questions related to “Overall Satisfaction” and “Willingness
to Recommend” to be in the 90% percentile of
our peer group. This, for example, means our
goal is to score better than 90% of 724 similar
providers surveyed in independent housing.
We did fall short of this aggressive goal (only by
3% in Independent Housing) but the good news
is that we saw improvement across the community compared to last year.
Debra J. Waedt, Campus Administrator
Community & Special Events
Growing at Boutwells
Since our Town Center opened nearly eight years
ago, we have welcomed thousands of guests
through our doors for a wide variety of events.
Over the last year demand for use of our spaces
has increased with new spaces available and our
ability to hold groups as large as 300 guests in
the Auditorium. In response, we have made
some changes to our event planning process to
make it easy for our customers to have their
event planning needs met. Gin Wolter is the
person coordinating events for our campus and
is the one to contact to make room reservations,
catering and set up arrangements. Gin can be
reached at 651-275-5122 or via email at
[email protected].
The survey results show us the top five priority
action areas for each housing program (Gables,
Commons, Arbors, Terrace, Village Homes and
Brownstones) identifying where we can make
the greatest impact in your satisfaction. For example, the results identify that our Independent
residents (VH, BS and Terrace) are most concerned about rent charges, personal assistance,
prompt service, responsiveness of management
and community life opportunities. It’s up to our
team to figure out what that really means we
need to do. We gather a lot of detail from your
written comments but will also be discussing in
upcoming resident meetings to make sure we
understand the root of your concerns. In an
effort to be as transparent as possible, I have
prepared a binder of materials and placed it in
the Library for all who would like to review the
results. There are 20-25 pages per housing type
providing detailed analysis of your feedback.
I encourage you to take a look.
We have also established a new room rental fee
schedule for all of our new spaces, capacities
and combination of rooms available. Effective
May 1, 2010, we require the room rental fee to
be paid upon reservation and for catering charges
to be paid on or before the date of the event.
Such payment is to be made by check to Boutwells Landing or charged to your resident account. In addition, our chefs have created a
whole new Catering Menu complete with new
buffet and plated dinner options that make it easy
for you to select the perfect meal for your occasion. The new menu and room rental pricing is
available on our website at this time. The catering menus will be available in the dining rooms,
at the front desks and in the café by the 15th of
May.

Good posture, both seated and standing, promotes the following: improved lung capacity so
your body gets more air. More air means better
circulation and more energy; improved digestion; stronger stomach and core muscles leading
to less back pain; and… regaining “lost” height
because you stand up taller.

SEVERE WEATHER REMINDER
It is time again to be mindful of the possibility
for severe weather outbreaks during the spring
and summer months in the upper Midwest.
We recommend that all residents be thoughtful
about how to respond in the event of severe
weather. We encourage you to be prepared, stay
alert to changing conditions, and react calmly in
the event of severe weather in our area.
If you don’t believe it, stay tuned for the upcoming posture initiative at your site and challenge
yourself to STAND and SIT UP TALL!

THE CHAPLAIN’S CORNER - NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER MAY 6 at NOON
God calls us to pray for our leaders and country in times of difficulty. We are experiencing so many economic,
moral and spiritual struggles we need to ask God for wisdom and guidance. We are encouraging everyone to
support the National Day of Prayer events here at Boutwells Landing. We will be having a brief noon time
Prayer Service in the Chapel and Town Hall. Please join us for this call to Prayer. We also encourage everyone
to sign up for our campus wide all day prayer vigil. We are asking staff and residents to “Pick” a 15 minute
slot to commit to pray for our country. The sign up sheet is on the table next to the Fruit Tree by the Chapel.
Thanks for being faithful in Prayer. Please pick up a prayer guide and bookmark for your use.
We are also blessed to have Dr. Craig Bowron speak about preparing for End of life. Be sure to
come to the Town Hall on Monday, May 3rd at 2pm to find out how to create an End of Life plan.
May is the fruit of GENTLENESS
Gentleness is the fruit that is displayed by deeds of service with a tender heart. It includes a humble calm and
quiet spirit. This fruit is further displayed by a soft answer that turns away anger. It is the ability to bring tranquility to a tense situation through a gentle approach and wise counsel that brings healing and restores peace.
Please nominate a staff member and/or a resident for a chance to receive a fruit basket for demonstrating the
Spirit of Gentleness by placing their name in the basket by the Chapel.

UNDERSTANDING “END OF LIFE” ISSUES
We have a rare opportunity to hear renowned speaker, Dr. Craig Bowron, present
information on the emotional, spiritual, and medical issues surrounding illness and
the end of life.
Dr. Bowron, a hospitalist, and internist at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, will
speak to us about caring for patients struggling through the winter of their lives. It is our hope
that Dr. Bowron’s message will promote a better understanding of the basic issues that deal
with these last years of life.
This will be the beginning of a series of meetings on end of life issues, including such topics
as: health care directives, power of attorney documents, hospice etc.
Monday, May 3rd at 2:00 p.m. in the Town Hall
Sign-ups preferred (at the Registration table). We hope you’ll join us!

FROM THE FOUNDATION
Driving For A Boutwells Transport Van
A fundraising project is underway to add a transport van at Boutwells Landing. Over $27,000
has been contributed through individual gifts and contributions to Jeans for a Cause, which
collects cash from employees in exchange for the opportunity to wear jeans on a given Friday.
Many residents have also participated in Jeans for a Cause by “kicking in” to sponsor an
employee or because they appreciate the enthusiasm and encouragement shown by the
Front Desk team handling the contributions. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to
the transport van project!
The “new-used” van will benefit residents and the Boutwells community in significant ways.
Features, use, and benefits will include the following:
♦ Available to residents wanting transportation to and/or from a medical appointment. For
a small fee ($5 or less, to be determined), any resident of Boutwells will be able to
schedule a ride in the surrounding area. Townhome, Brownstone, Terrace, Commons,
Arbor and Gables residents will all be invited to use the van service.
♦ The smaller size (similar to a smaller airport shuttle) will make it economical to operate,
yet it will hold up to five passengers.
♦ A hydraulic lift will make it easy to bring wheelchairs on board. There will be flexibility in the seating arrangements, allowing up to 4 wheelchair passengers, or 2 wheelchair
passengers and three non-wheelchair passengers.
♦ Van customization will allow for plenty of handles to grab, a roof extension that allows
most passengers to stand while entering/exiting, and jumpseats that can be deployed or
collapsed, depending on the amount of wheelchair space needed.
♦ It is expected that the van will be a late model, low mileage van. Although it will have
up to 20,000 miles, it will have a “new” look and feel. This approach will make the van
a more economical acquisition.
♦ Residents will schedule rides in the same fashion as with the existing van. Medical appointments are expected to be the primary use, yet the van may also be used to divert
some of the rides from the larger existing bus when available.
♦ The van will be painted on the exterior to include the Boutwells Landing brand.
♦ Vehicle cost research has indicated that our target for fundraising should be $45,000.
We’re 65% of the way there, as soon as 100% of the funds are raised, the van will be
purchased and made operational!
To support this project, residents are asked to let a staff member know they are interested, or
to call the Foundation Office at *5178. Similarly, residents are asked to consider support of
this project should they receive a direct request. Questions about this project can be directed
to Liz Jefferson at *5040, or Steve Preus at *5178.
