Congratulations!
This Week’s Focus is on …….The Year 4 St Just Roseland Camp
On Wednesday the 18th of June, some of year 4 went on a school
camp to Roseland. It took roughly about an hour to get there by
bus. When we got there the first thing we did was unpack our bags
into our dormitories. We had double bunk-beds. Next we were split
into two groups, some of us did the pirate challenge where you had
to do loads of activities.
The next day we went to the beach to do the water activities which
were canoeing, sailing and a beach activity. First we were split up
into two groups. The first group (my group) did canoeing which was
so much fun because we did lots of activities like ‘catch the boy’ and ‘collect the barrel’ and more.
The next activity was the beach activity where you walked around and were asked questions and we
had to make a sculpture out of stuff from the beach. Next we did sailing and at one point you got to
steer the boat and we saw Olympic sailors which was cool. The bad thing was that at one point the
boat was on its side and was rocking, it was horrible.
The next day we swapped the activities so our group did the pirate challenge where we had to do
the number challenge where there were eight numbers and nine squares
and you had to move into correct order and weren’t allowed to go
diagonal ways. Next we did the coconut run were you had guttering and
had to get into pairs and roll a tennis ball down it. After that we did the
blindfold challenge where you had to hold onto a rope and get guided
around. Finally, we did the ‘Crocodile River’ challenge where you had two
wooden planks and four wooden squares and you had to get across a 5
metre gap. It was quite hard. Then we went home.

Heart Dissection Year 5
The beginning of Science and DT week in year 5 was amazing. In the morning we learnt all about how the
heart works. We learnt what arteries and veins are. The arteries deliver oxygenated blood around the body
and veins bring back deoxygenated blood to the right atrium to be taken to the lungs to be oxygenated.
After this the blood gets pumped back into the left atrium and out of the left ventricle to go to the body
through the arteries. To help us for the dissection in the afternoon we created a paper model of the heart
and labelled it.
In the afternoon we took part in 3 activities: first we did ‘Sketching a Heart’. We copied an image of the
heart using sketching pencils to show the detail. Because there were no photographs in the olden days,
there had to be trained artists to draw the object/item carefully. Then we went to meet some doctors.
Doctors from Treliske hospital came to show us how use a stethoscope and how much blood,
approximately, is pumped around the body by the heart. They also brought in a machine that they use in
hospital to accurately measure our heartbeats and oxygen level. Our last activity was Heart Dissection. A
scientist from Redruth school came with lots of real sheep hearts. We
were given a tray full of tools including real scalpels and special
medical tweezers. First we cut open the heart to look at the different
chambers of the heart. We also got to see the heart strings with hold
the valves.
It was an awesome experience and we all really enjoyed it.
