PASSPORT News from Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts PNC Grow Up Great Program Nearly Doubles in One Year Now in its second year, PNC’s Grow Up Great with Science is giving 173 teachers and administrators the knowledge and skills to engage preschoolers in science learning. Thanks to a generous grant from the PNC Foundation, Whitaker Center is able to provide valuable professional development workshops for teachers and administrators from Capital Area Head Start (CAHS). Whitaker Center’s science educators conduct a series of day-long seminars throughout the school year and follow up with site visits to each participating CAHS location. With 98 educators having begun the program last year, more than half of this year’s participants are in their second year of the PNC Grow Up Great program, centered on themes of environmental ecology, physical science and human biology. Dr. Patricia Vathis from the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Theresa Albericci from the Pennsylvania Game Commission served as guest presenters on the topic of environmental ecology. New to the program this year are teachers and administrators from the Harrisburg Preschool Partnership between the Harrisburg School District and Capital Area Head Start. The themes for this group are air, water, land and inquiry. January-March 2011 Volume 11 Number 5 The mission of Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts is to serve as the center for scientific, artistic, cultural and educational activities to enhance the region’s quality of life and economic vitality. Funding from PNC’s Grow Up Great program will cover admission fees for these invited guests to visit Harsco Science Center and participate in special science activities tailored to preschoolers that day. Très Bonne Année Draws Record Attendance Last October, the annual wine fundraising event, Très Bonne Année, celebrated its 10th anniversary, netting more than half a million dollars for Whitaker Center. On October 16, nearly 600 people attended the black-tie gala dinner, and 325 guests sampled wines and olive oil during a Vintner’s Tasting event the night before. The theme for this year’s events, Indelible Impressions: Rooted in Tradition, was a celebration of the craft and culture of Biagio Cru and Estate Wines and Colavita USA, the maker of olive oil. For more information about Très Bonne Année and the 2011 events, please visit www.tresbonneannee.org. Derek and Margaret Hathaway were honored at this year’s event with the second annual Jason J. Litton Award, honoring persons in the community who emulate Dr. Litton’s tenets and embrace his philanthropy, his generous spirit, his love of wine and his general life philosophy. w h i t a k e rc e n t e r. o r g | A M e m b e r B e n e f i t News from Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts Move It! Gallery Attracts New Funding Support Harsco Science Center’s newest gallery, Move It!, scheduled to open in February, would not be possible without the financial support of a number of generous contributors. As of December 1, 2010, commitments had been secured from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Gannett Fleming, the Josiah W. and Bessie H. Kline Foundation, the Pennsylvania Highway Information Association, Quandel Enterprises, and Warden Asphalt Company, with gifts ranging from $25,000 to $100,000. Several of these organizations are new Whitaker Center donors. On their reason for giving to this project, Bub Manning, Principal with The Quandel Group, Inc. explained, “Quandel Enterprises is proud to be a major supporter of Move It! and Whitaker Center in general. Whitaker Center’s contribution to our community’s cultural offerings is outstanding. As a Construction Manager and General Contractor, we are constantly moving material, equipment and manpower, so the association with Move It! is a natural fit.” The lead gift for this project came from Warden Asphalt Company and was highlighted in a SPOTLIGHT article last spring. “Our gift to Move It! was a natural fit – not only for the company, but also for my family,” said John Warden, President of Warden Asphalt Company. “We have been supporters of Whitaker Center since its inception. From a business perspective, we feel transportation is of vital importance to our region, and we are excited about how Move It! will present the subject in an entertaining and educational fashion,” Warden said. Whitaker Center is grateful to all who have provided support to Move It!, and we continue to seek additional funding for this project. All contributors of $25,000 and above receive name recognition in the Move It! gallery, as well as other donor benefits. w h i t a k e rc e n t e r. o r g | A M e m b e r B e n e f i t PASSPORT Access Fund Grows with New Corporate Gift Thanks to the generosity of others, Whitaker Center has been able to provide free admission for more than 5,000 economically-disadvantaged children who would otherwise be unable to benefit from Whitaker Center programs. Now, with support from a new corporate grant, even more children will have an opportunity to experience science learning outside the classroom. Whitaker Center’s Access Fund was established in the early stages of the founding of the Center. The majority of support each year has come from a special donor-advised fund set up with The Foundation for Enhancing Communities by Ellen Brody Hughes and her two brothers, James and Thomas in memory of their parents William and Virginia Brody. “We wanted to give generously to the wonderful new Center in downtown Harrisburg, but we were determined to do it in a way that would make a difference to those who might not otherwise be able to take advantage of all that it would offer to the community. We’ve been so happy that our original idea has been executed in such a beneficial way, and we are glad that our parents’ names live on through the continuation of the Access Fund,” Hughes said. This year, additional support has come through a grant from ArcelorMittal, the world's leading steel company. In describing his company’s philosophy on corporate giving, Dave Wirick, ArcelorMittal’s General Manager, explained, “We are pleased to join Whitaker Center in creating new opportunities for young people to be inspired by science. ArcelorMittal and other U.S. manufacturers rely heavily on the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills of our workforce. Through hands-on exhibits and creative educational programs, Whitaker Center introduces children to skills and concepts that companies like ArcelorMittal will look for when recruiting the future leaders of our industry.” ArcelorMittal maintains a presence in the local community with its Steelton plant. Access Funds cover general admission fees for regular programs in Harsco Science Center, Discovery Labs, Select Medical IMAX® Theater and children’s productions in Sunoco Performance Theater. Such funds are provided only to schools with a majority of students in the school lunch program and Central Pennsylvania nonprofit organizations that serve the needs of low-income youth or children with special needs. During the 2009-10 school year, Whitaker Center’s Access Fund covered admission fees for 518 children during 28 different group visits. Dr. Michael Hanes, Whitaker Center President and CEO (center), poses for a photo with Jim and Jean Grandon at a November Gems Society event, which was underwritten with support from the Grandons.
