Dear Joburg Resident
The Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge is in its 20th year and is set to attract 33 000 cyclists to the streets of Joburg on Sunday 20 November 2016. To
ensure the safety of both the cyclists as well as the residents, the City of Joburg, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, the
Johannesburg Roads Agency and the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport will implement TOTAL ROAD CLOSURE along the route.
This year marks the 3rd year that the Start and Finish of the race will be at Riversands Commercial Park. There are a few tweaks to the route this
year, which includes a lap of the new Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit giving cyclist the chance to test their speed around this recently upgraded
world class track. Also new in 2016 is that we will no longer be taking cyclists on the Joe Slovo, Hillbrow and Gandhi Square loop. The route
will instead continue up the M2 South, take a left turn onto the Carr Street onramp into the Newtown Precinct and over the iconic Nelson
Mandela Bridge. We understand the impact of the road closures and thank you for giving up your streets for the day – your co-operation helps
to make a difference to many people, in addition to the cyclists. All participants in the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge have been encouraged to
“Ride For A Purpose” and entrants are heeding this call. There are already over 102 registered charities entered and committed to raising funds
and/or awareness for their causes.
Please familiarise yourself with the route map on the reverse side of this flyer and then utilise the TomTom Maps Interactive Map at
www.cyclechallenge.co.za to assist residents and motorists to navigate the city avoiding the road closures.
The dedicated Call Centre - 011 017 2700 - is operational every weekday from 08h00 to 17h00 and from 04h00 to 17h00 on Cycle Challenge
Sunday. We are here to assist with all route and road closure queries. Watch out for the bright yellow traffic advisories that will be erected from
9 November on all directly affected roads.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. You will be contributing to the success of one of the world's largest mass participation cycling
events and an iconic Joburg event. We urge you to join supporters at one of the many vibey Powerzones along the route to be a part of this
annual experience.
