Welcome to Second Grade

 Stanford 10
 Occurs in February
 Is a norm-referenced test
 Does not impact their grades, but instead is used to plan
instruction.
 OLSAT
 Occurs in February
 Provides a School Achievement Index measure
 We require students to bring to school various supplies





that they will use throughout the school year.
Some supplies are kept individually for student’s use.
Others are collected and used for the class.
The supply list is available through the LES website.
Staples is providing a service to purchase supplies
directly through them. These supplies will be shipped
directly to the classroom for your child.
Orders are due by June 1st.
 There are various opportunities to volunteer in our
classrooms throughout the year.
 PTA Copy Center
 Reading Mentors/Read Naturally
 Enrichment/Intervention Opportunities
 Room Parent
 Special Activities
 Field Trip Chaperones
 PTA point of contact
 This year there will be no exceptions for field trips. We
recommend filling out an application at the beginning
of the year since the process can take about 2 weeks to
complete. That way everyone is prepared!
 Applications are available in the office and provided in
your welcome back packet you receive at the beginning
of school.
 Environmental Field Trip to Sotterley Plantation
 While we are on our field trip we learn about the life cycle of the
monarch butterfly. We are also able to observe the herbs,
vegetables, flowers, woods, and eagle’s nest present on the
grounds.
 Policy dictates that we are allowed 2 chaperones . Chaperones
are chosen randomly by each teacher.
 Smithsonian Museum of Natural History
 Students have the opportunity to explore the many
exhibits in the museum including: fossils, jewels,
insects, ocean life, and the live Butterfly Pavilion.
 There is no limit to the amount of chaperones that we
can take on this trip.
 Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday in
all classrooms.
 Differentiated spelling words are assigned weekly.
Students are required to complete spelling
assignments throughout the week.
 We also encourage parents to read nightly with their
child in addition to completing homework
assignments.
 Homework assignments and scores are posted on
HAC.
 Based on the time of our lunch, snacks may be
permitted in your child’s classroom next year. We
practice “working snacks”, so it is essential that snacks
are not messy. Clean snacks also help keep ants out of
our classrooms. Snacks should also be healthy and we
encourage students to only bring water if they would
like a drink.
 Information about whether snacks will be permitted
will be provided at the beginning of next year after
scheduling is complete.
 The school nutrition policy is one snack daily that does not
meet the nutrition standards. We are also being asked to
limit the celebrations involving food that occur during the
school day. Typically celebrations occur for Halloween,
Christmas, Valentine’s Day and the end of the year in each
classroom.
 Our policy for birthday parties is being reviewed by the SIT
team on May 23rd. They will develop guidelines for best
practices.
 We are also asking that birthday party invitations do not
become the responsibility of the classroom teacher to
distribute to students because of the loss of instruction
time. Ideally, we ask that party invitations be distributed
outside of school time.
